Shoulder injury, his return is questionable....Doesn't sound too serious. This is the Lions though.

Editted...It's a seperated shoulder...

Pre-season madness.

No easy solution. Unless you can figure out a way to extract the greed DNA gene from NFL owners and their children.

Help me out here. Didn't Detroit already lose their rookie RB for most of the season? Name slips me feeble mind.

Yes, that would be Artose Pinner (their 4th Rd. pick) and he's out for at least 6 weeks.... They recently released injury-prone
RB, Luke Staley.... The other RBs on their depth chart (besides the aforementioned Bryson) are Avon Cobourne (an UDFA), and
Autry Denson (played for the Rhein Fire)......

I think that is bad news for the cards. Stewart is relatively easy to contain. With 25 carries in a game, Bryson will break at least one for big yardage.

Bad.

I THINK this is a bad development. Stewart is definatly not a game breaker but is steady and never fumbles. This does not bode well for the Lions. Name to remember is Avon Coburn, an undrafted rookie out of West Virginia. He is the all time leading rusher in the big East. He looks to me to be a keeper and has made the opening day roster if not a starter vs. the Cards. Its seems easier for a rookie RB to come into the league and be a quality starter. Artose Pinner the SEC player of the year was taken by the Lions in the 4th round, personally I would of rather seen them take Onterio Smith, but they refuse to take my phone calls the day of the draft. Pinner suffered a ankle injury and is on the PUP for the start of the season. I hate the preseason the Lions have lost some quality players that were going to be counted on this season.

So I guess this means you think they will only make the playoffs and won't win the Super Bowl this year

Lions | Life Without Stewart? MRI Will Tell Team's Fate
Fri, 29 Aug 2003 07:42:21 -0700

The Detroit News reports Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci awaits the results from an MRI on RB James Stewart's (shoulder) injured shoulder. Once the results are in, the team will have a better idea of what direction they'll be going opening day. "I don't know who the lead dog will be," Mariucci said. "It very well could be a running back by committee." Potential committee members include RBs Avon Cobourne, Shawn Bryson and Autry Denson; all of whom had their ups and downs in the team's game Thursday, Aug. 28.

Lions | Stewart Out 3-4 Weeks - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 29 Aug 2003 11:10:00 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Detroit Lions RB James Stewart (shoulder) will miss the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals due to the shoulder injury he suffered Thursday, Aug. 28. The good news is Stewart's MRI showed no significant structural damage and he will not require surgery. However, he'll probably miss three or four weeks of action because of the injury.

Lions | No Decision on Starting RB
Fri, 29 Aug 2003 14:59:03 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Detroit Lions haven't decided who will start opening day at tailback. RBs Shawn Bryson, Autry Denson and Avon Cobourne are in the mix. Bryson has nine career starts, Denson has one and Cobourne has none.

I watched the first half of the Bills-lions game.

Frankly, I was quite impressed by the LIONS O-D-lines. They were running a pretty efficient West Coast offence: Short passes, screens, running between the tackles to set up play action. Their D-line was stout against the run.

Stewart was certainly doing his part, until hurt - and their wideouts, notably Rogers, seem quite fast.

On defense they swarm to the ball.

Their weakness, judging from what I saw, seems to be in the secondary and kick coverage.

Sound familiar?

their defensive line (lions) is about the best in the NFL outside of Tampa Bay...could give us problems..

At this moment, it would more than likely be Shawn Bryson.... Unfortunately Bryson only rushed for 12 yards in 10 attempts this pre-season......

The following update on this link

With the deadline to trim the roster to 53 on Sunday at 4 p.m., Mariucci said he wouldn't be able to determine a starter for the Arizona game. He said picking up a free agent off the waiver wire could impact that decision.

I certainly hope the latter does happen because Bryson hasnt been playing injury-free either and Avon Cobourne is a rookie UDFA and Denson has only played in the World League.....

I guess it's been reported on ESPN's Bottomline that the Lions traded a conditional draft choice to the Bills for Olandis Gary....
