uh, no it wasn't. at the time he said he didn't want to go, it was right in the middle of the first firestorm regarding a possible three-way deal, a deal you didn't believe really existed and now are continuing to act like didn't exist.
That's not true. I outlined the threeway deal before anyone else did (go back, it's true). What changed was when I began to hear the Wolves demands. At that point, it became a demand for a "value" trade that would have gutted the Suns rotation and destroyed the Suns chances to win this year.
The three way with Boston ONLY works if the Wolves do a cap dump for picks. The Wolves didn't want Marion and KT. They apparently only wanted a lot of really good rookie contract guys. The effect would be to gut any team dealing with them.
The main thing Boston offers is Ratliff's expiring contract. But how does this get the Wolves what they were asking for? It doesn't even when their best young player is included in the deal. Sure they'd settle for Amare and KT, but the Suns would be insane to give up Amre and carry both KG and Marion's contracts for two years.
So you are right, I did not take those deals seriously. As much as I like KG, I never believed the Suns were prepared to totally gut the team. As long as the Wolves were making insane demands, I had to believe they were just blowing smoke to convince KG they really tried but couldn't make it happen.
This latest nonsense with Atlanta makes me wonder. Do the Wolves management gets the fact that they have more to lose than the Suns if something doesn't happen?
What about Marion? At what point did Marion's agent said he wouldn't go? Was it when the first rumor of the Boston offer was made, was it when the three way deal was discussed, was it when the Jefferson deal was discussed, etc. I don't know because it's not like his agent put out a press release.
When the initial Boston deal was presented (a straight forward cap dump) with the #5, it made sense for Marion to say he didn't want to go to Boston. At the time there were a lot of rumors he wanted out due to comflicts with Amare. Has he said anything since then? Perhaps he really wants to kill the deal because the Celtics aren't very good and it's cold up there. At this point I don't know if that's the case nor if the Suns have tried to change his mind.
If the Gray rumor has any validity, I think the Celtics believe they can convince him.
