Lott, on not discriminating between rooks and vets:

"Oh, no, not at all," he said happily. "When you get out of your million-dollar house, go get in your $100,000 car, go do your $25,000 appearance and eat your free meal and then come here in this building, you can check your checkbook at the door because I really can't concern myself with what your account number is. I've got to train you."

Can't wait for this dude to get his meat-hooks into the guys. He's gonna have some scrambled Kolb and dry rookie on the side for breakfast.

Ok... I'm not a hater, but seriously, can someone explain all the hype Lott gets?

Do we have far fewer injuries than the rest of the league? Do our O and D lines posses some superhuman strength that allow them to pancake block or blow up blocking schemes at will?
If so, I haven't seen it yet.

It's a good question. Clearly the league places some value on him, otherwise his current paycheck (a noteworthy sum, does he check his own checkbook at the door?) wouldn't be what it is.

Without other teams creating a demand for his services his contract wouldn't have been noteworthy.

Here's an article by Somers before he resigned:

But don't underestimate the contributions of Lott, a galvanizing, motivating personality who is partly responsible for the noted increase in this team's stamina, swagger and strength.
Like many others, Fitzgerald has reason to believe. During a recent loss to the 49ers on "Monday Night Football," the NFL's best receiver fell to the ground, and two San Francisco players fell on the back of his legs. Doctors later told Fitzgerald if his legs weren't so chiseled, the injury could've been devastating.

The player knew just whom to thank for that.

"We're talking about saving the season, maybe even my career," Fitzgerald said.
Players get caught up in hype and rhetoric as easily as the rest of us, but between us (sources who don't know) and the players (who do know) the value of a trainer, it's not harm to give them the benefit of the doubt.

John Lott reminds me of my wife. She's always finding chores for me to do. I'm telling her I need "downtime" to get over the Holidays. Instead of January and February off (like the Players), she is willing to give me half a day. So, I don't feel bad for the players.

Well it is safe to assume a better trainer helps more than a crappy one right? so there we go.

Cards D in the second half should answer your question about how good John Lott is. Also if you look at the beating Fitz took against the Seahawks there is another reason for Coach Lott.

I remember in the playoffs when Fitz's leg was folded up in the enzone and it look like he was done... Nope... That's Coach Lott...

Not to mention I think he is the type of coach that has an infectious attitude (in a good way).

good motivator, workout warrior, players buy into it and get to peak physical condition.

If you hired a personal trainer and he motivated you to the best shape of your life, he is good.

A good coach gets a team to coalesce on the field. A good trainer gets them to do it in the weight room.

I think it's more about leadership an motivation than it is about strength (although that's a pre-requisite).

Not having offseason strength and conditioning killed our season this year. Look at all the injuries. Starts with Adub, goes down the list, doesn't even matter what position, just injury after injury--to our RB's (both of them), half our secondary, right down to our QB. I mean, cmon, obviously it makes a difference. More injuries this year than I can ever remember.

And that's just injury related stuff, we haven't even gotten into dudes like Dan Williams and co. coming in all Shamu looking.

I was thinking the same thing, when have you ever saw a defense play so many minutes and continually get stronger as the game goes on? I've never seen anything like it before, part of the credit has to go to Lott.

Lott showed me what a wimp I was in Cincy. It was cold, upper 30's, and the wind was blowing decently. I had a couple layers on and was alright but it was still pretty cold when the wind blew. He was on the sidleines dressed like he was ready to play golf. He wore a polo short sleeve golf shirt and Khaki pants. He had to be freezing.

Great point about Fitzgerald and that injury. It looked devastating.

So is safe to say the defense didn't buy in until the second half of the season?

Because the start of this year.. and for years previous... they quit in dozens of games.
