Cardinals have added DeAndre Hopkins, traded away David Johnson, have exclusive rights on Justin Murray, tendered Zane Gonzalez and added Jordan Phillips. And free agency is not done.

Lots of excitement ahead. This frees the Cardinals hands in the draft.

This is the most active FA period I can remember in a long, long time...and it's still not officially starting until tomorrow. Remember all of the hair pulling snail days? Just watching every other team seemingly make deals to get better and the Cards waiting for the lower tier FA guys? I fully appreciate that they haven't gone after the very cream of the crop this year, but they are still being way more active early than in years past.

I am saying there is no GUARANTEE that what he did prior to playing in Buffalo is indicative of what type of player he is moving forward. It's like the bad argument that Kenyan Drake that we saw last season in our offense was more of a fluke and what we should expect is what he was in Miami.
You just want to get me started up again, huh? lol.

I like the way the Cardinals are addressing needs before the draft and they got some cream with DeAndre Hopkins. That David Johnson trade still blows me away. Those are two huge moves right there. If the Cardinals continue to add depth before the draft I will be content.

Of course I still want to be greedy. :wink2:

That's good - I'm happy that Zo said he's a good teammate, and there are indications that he's maturing.

AJ - if you were in charge of FA, does this seem like the kind of player to acquire as your big FA acquisition?

$10 million isnt a huge investment in this free agency market.

Look at what Graham Glasgow got from the Lions and he was very average player with the Lions.

From what I've read, teams and players are on notice that there may be a bigger jump in salary cap space in the next few years, so teams are willing to pay more now and players are asking for now.

Players are capable of improving throughout their careers and systems they play in do matter. Phillips might be a one year wonder or he could be an improving player entering his prime. Free agency is always about betting on the come unless you’re lucky enough to have a ton of cap space and a stud happens to be an unrestricted free agent.

The Cardinals made their splash with D Hop and they’ll probably get a deal done with Drake. Signing Phillips gives them a young player with plenty of tread coming off of his best season at a position that needed an upgrade.

Some of you are putting a lot of stock into the "Miami stink" theory.

Theory?

Miami has been awful and poorly managed for years now. It helped that they played in an awful AFC East for years, but they have sucked for awhile now.

I guess not - I'd expect 10M to get more in FA, but maybe not.

In any event, prior to free agency, I don't remember anyone mentioning the name Jordan Phillips (in spite of our obvious need at DT), and the move is being universally panned by anyone who isn't a Bills or Cards fan. Sure it "could" end up working out, but I wouldn't bet on it.

For a team full of holes, paying 10M for what you hope a player to be is too rich for my blood.

You're going to have to be a little more specific than that.

Great, who cares?

Ha, most of the board had no idea who Jordan Phillips was before this morning. Now please tell me what he's done to warrant 10M per year in his 5 years in the league. His production so far doesn't match his contract - you want to pay 10M per year for hope?

Nor is it yours. What's your point?

Look at the list of DT's that make 10M plus - please explain to me why Phillips deserves to be in this group.

You must be registered for see images attach

So a bidding war for his services is irrelevant?

Evidently, there are no explanations that will satisfy you.

Hard to argue with this one...

Players who have played better once they left Miami/Gase:

Tannehill
Drake
Minka Fitzpatrick
Jordan Phillips
Tannehill, yes.
Drake? Ehhh, Gase left, and he still did nothing in Miami with a new staff. He had some good games here, but also some real stinkers that people seem to have blocked out.
Fitzpatrick played very well in both places.

The reason I bring this up, is because it's puzzling that Phillips rejoined the Cardinals apparently to play with coaches he previously had... in Miami, under Gase.

The guy can push the pocket some, sacks are sacks and he's a big body to clog the running lanes which is what one needs in a 3-4. Peters got a little push last season but we were still lacking any push at all to collapse a QB's pocket or freeing our LBs. Free agency always redefines the salaries since they are the first to affect supply and demand. You will overpay as most free agents but the Cards acted accordingly... this draft is now looking like Simmons if available or probably one of those LTs

Good stuff here, I also don't care how many sacks he gets. The main weakness the Cards had last year was they couldn't stop the run. If he helps there as you suggest, he will be a big plus for the Cards defense.

More than one of us mentioned Phillips. He was ranked in the top 75 free agents.

Ugh you brought up those bad memories from last year of RBs gouging us for 8, 10, 15 yard gains

3 of them were vs the Titans when Marriota was holding on to the ball like a blankey.

It was his 1st real year in a 3-4 which obvs suits him better than the 4-3 he had at Miami but it's too much money for a one season wonder.

the Bills haven’t ran a 3-4 in several years.

Phillips was the top FA DT remaining on the Athletic's list this morning, and #52 FA overall.
52. Jordan Phillips, DT, Bills (27)

He settled for a one-year deal to return to Buffalo last offseason and will now get to test the market again. Phillips’ numbers last year (9.5 sacks, 16 QB hits) should be taken with a grain of salt. He had just 5.5 sacks and 17 QB hits in his first four NFL seasons. Phillips is an athletic, powerful defensive tackle who is scheme-versatile and should get a chance to start somewhere.

He put up better totals in 8 games with the Cardinals than he had in any season prior. He was unquestionably better with us than with Miami. Also every RB (even the best ones) have some poor statistical games.

If you want to discuss this, come into the Kenyan Drake thread. I don't want to derail people trying to talk about our new DE/DT.

https://www.arizonasportsfans.com/forum/threads/kenyan-drake-gets-the-transition-tag.345398

His 8 game sample size is inclusive of three good games. His yards per game is atrociously low, in the 30s. There are tons of RBs who break off a hot streak and never do anything again, especially when wanting to get paid.

We can discuss there if you want.
