Michael Eisen, of Giants.com, reports the New York Giants have signed free agent PK Bill Gramatica (Cardinals). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Not sure who his competition is, but I doubt he makes it out of camp.

I have always been pretty positive about Bill Gramatica so take this with a grain of salt - I'll bet that there will be bitching in the near future about how Bill is doing so well and why we have such a bad kicker. Anybody remember Al DelGreco?

I'm right there with ya. He's a solid kicker. Give me field goal over field position any day.

Billy will be competing with Matt Bryant, who converted only 78.6% of his field goals in 2003. Tom Coughlin goes through kickers like crazy.

damn yard gnomes -

i'm sure he'll do fine there kicking the FG, but with that wind in the Meadowlands, he'll have even a tougher time kicking off.

Personally I'd rather carry three kickers than three quarterbacks.
Get it into the endzone, make the freaking field goal, and pin them inside the 20.

The third, emergency QB is just dumb if you ask me. Keep one on the practice squad.

I totally agree. When was the last time you've seen the third stringer get in the game (other than pre season of course)?

AJ Feeley. The Raiders needed theirs last season. I still don't care. If you're down to your third QB, you're pretty much sunk anyway. Let Quan do it. Run the wishbone. Sump'n.

Was that in a game the first stringer started in or was Feeley elevated to second string before the game?

McNabb was out with the ankle, the 2nd stringer got hurt after starting, and Feeley came in.

With the Raiders, Gannon got hurt, then a couple weeks later Tuiasosopo got hurt, and the 3rd stringer had to play.

The Broncs only kept 2 QBs last season, then Plummer got hurt, and the next guy was ineffective, so they ended up carrying three or four QBs.

3rd QB

The problem is, the third QB is a fluke to get into a game that the first 1st QB starts. If McCown goes down, we could bring up our third QB from the pratice squad to back up the next game while McCown is on IR.

Oh, since it wasn't clear, I agree. 3 Kickers are more valuable than 3 QBs.

I say screw kickers and punters.

If I was running a team, I'd never punt - always go for it on 4th down, never kick an extra point - always go for 2, and for kick offs - whomever could kick the best out of everyone else on the team - they'd be the one to do it.

I'd don't know yet what type of players i'd have for those extra roster spots yet - maybe do something nepotismish.

You just scored a touchdown with no time left in the game to tie the score. What do you do?

Last preseason, Bill Gramatica kicked a 50 yard field goal at the end of the game when the stadium staff forgot to put up the nets. It came right to me and I caught it. Therefore, Bill Gramatica is cool. :D

By the way, I had forgotten about this until I read it this morning, but do you guys remember who handled kickoffs in the game after Gramatica hurt himself?

I would have liked to keep both Rackers and Billy G. and keep Duncan for competition in camp.

I remember that. You sit in the North End Zone, didn't they let you keep the ball?

They didn't put the nets up because the didn't think he'd kick it that far. :D

I would've liked to have kept him anyway. Like Section11 said, points are more important than a few yards on a kickoff.
