Just curious: If Nate Poole had dropped the ball would QB still be a non-priority?

I still have nightmares of that infamous day. I still remember calling my brother 4 hours before the game and guaranteeing him that the Cardinals would blow it, win the damn game and lose out on Eli Manning. It was absolutely surreal to watch McCown roll out to his right and fire that missle to Poole and to see the ref. indicate touchdown. I sat there for a few moments and just laughed my tail off. Only the Cardinals could do this twice in 6 years (1997-beathing Atlanta and blowing the #1 overall pick) and now in 2003.

What would have happened had Poole dropped that pass? Would Denny Green still be bragging about having a potentially great one in McCown? I kinda doubt it. I guess in a way we all need to thank Josh McCown and Nate Poole for giving us something to talk about these last 2 months and for the next 2 months.

Only the Cardinals could win in that fashion when it meant absolutely nothing and blow a shot at the #1 pick.

It is impossible to tell.

If I were to guess, I don't think that Green would make a different judgement based on one incompletion.

What I think is safe to say is that Poole has a job this year as a result of that catch.

I don't think that's safe to say at all.

The dud was cut, what, 4 times from the active roster? On a team that was hurting for WRs? There's a reason for it. He's a marginal NFL receiver.

I am referring to the fact that had the pass been dropped we would have sealed up the #1 pick and Denny Green could go out and get the guy I think he really wants (Eli Manning) without having to sell the farm to get him. He could stop this "Josh McCown is the next superman" stuff and just take the guy both he and Rod Graves were hoping for (Eli Manning). I am convinced that Denny Green is either in serious denial and trying to convince Graves and others that McCown is the real deal only so he can justify drafting Larry Fitzgerald or he is playing the poker game, trying to get San Diego to lower their trade demands by giving the impression that we really aren't desperate for Manning and then making the swap when San Diego buckles.

Just a frustrated fans opinion. Absolutely no fact just pure speculation.

That win over Minnesota, the one you STILL think we should have lost ON PURPOSE ... will be the point we look back on, that turned this franchise around. If you want to follow a LOSER, find another team.

That game could have been the reason Denny Green came here.

That game could have been the reason Josh McCown got a chance to prove he really WAS the next great QB.

That game could be the reason free agents decide to come here.

That game could have proved that some players on this team really DO care, and CAN be good players in this league.

That game ... could have saved us from making a huge mistake with the #1 pick overall.

How do you know?

I know this, I was at THAT GAME, and it will forever be in my top 5 wins, since the Cardinals came to AZ.

I like your line of thinking with this post.

Lex,

I have spent the last 28 years suffering with this team. Everytime they win I replay the tape until its worn out (including the win against Minnesota). But isn't it amazing that they lose the games that actually mean something and win the ones that in the grand scheme of things mean nothing.

Every win means a ton to me including the Minnesota game, but damn its frustrating to lose out on Peyton Manning and now Eli Manning on last second plays in end of the year meaningless games.

I know of your record with the Cards. I know that you're a long time suffering fan. Victory will just be that much sweeter for you WHEN it happens. It will happen.

From my perspective, we did win the most important games last season. I was not high on our chances for 03, after we dumped our entire backfield, and receiving corps. ALL of them.

I was just hoping we could be competitive and not get blown out every game. Especially the "home" games. Especially the "home" games against the NFC north teams, that would be HEAVILY represented a Sun Devil Stadium. It's not much fun out there when this happens.

My #1 best scenario before last season started, was to beat the Packers when they came here. I knew I was hoping for a miracle. I would NEVER have had the audacity to think we could win that game, PLUS the viqueen game?

To me, those two were the games we HAD TO win. Low and behold ... we did.

Now we take the draft pick we deserve, and do the best we can.

Holian,

One thing Ive learned...dont fight with arizonians. They are right you are wrong. Nothing good could have come from losing that game. Winning that game guarenteed us a dynasty blah blah blah. Your not a real fan....find a worse team....i was "at that game" and made me more important than you because you may live 3000 miles away.....pick your cliche'

But on the bright side I think the draft will turn out ok and the green hiring is fantastic and has nothing to do with that last win.

playoffs next year!!!!

I gotta admit there's still a part of me that agrees with Holian that in the "big picture" losing the game would have helped the franchise.

You can make the argument that for every point you added Eli Manning or Ben might have done the same thing. Attract Denny Green, give either QB the chance to be great, attract FA's.

But I'm pretty torn, I hate losing, and I have to admit my skepticism of McCown has decreased since Green came on board. I saw last year what a good HC and OC can do with a QB I thought was beyond "repair", McCown is bigger, faster and has a better arm so if Denver can do it with Jake, why can't we do it with Josh?

That's the one argument I see in favor of drafting a Fitzgerald, Roy Williams or Winslow, if you surround Josh with enough targets, it'll make it MUCH easier for him during his learning curve as a starter.

I have to admit I am somewhat excited to see what Josh can do, although if Ben is sitting there at 3 I still would take him.

I agree russ. I wanted Manning but now that Green came aboard and how he can win with even average QB's makes me hope WE DON NOT draft a QB.

You're right, Arizonan's ARE always right.

How do you know Denny didn't come here because of that last win? Is that you're opinion, or fact? The Vikings orginization didn't treat him very well when he was run out of town, Denny could have given the Cards some tips on how to beat Minnie, no?

I've seen recent mocks that have Manning going to us at #3, and Roethlisberger going at #5. If that happens, that last win would have still given us the player SOME people wanted at #3 money, instead of #1 money, that WOULD be something good coming from winning that last game, the one we had no reason to win.

Right?

Many of the Manning pimpers on this board have changed their minds now. Why? Because of that last win.

:notworthy :notworthy

That game was awesome and gave me an even deeper sense of pride in my team. I'd rather follow a team that wins that type of game than one that purposely lies down and takes the loss.

Go Cardinals!!!

You guys do know about the huge number of 1st round QB picks that have been busts.

You do know that people in essence reach for QBs in round one because of the QB position.

For everyone who says he is like Peyton you can say also say Eli Manning's profile is lot like Drew Brees with the added factor of his last name.

Top pick QBs get a premium that eats up a large chunk of club money.

It is a bigger gamble then taking a LT for example. It might end up being a good thing for the Cards that Poole caught that ball.

Remember Leaf/Manning similar thing happening now with Eli/Ben - lot of people saying Ben is better will be better then Eli.

DG wants to win right away. QBs really need development time I think DG wants a player who starts day 1 and contributes at a high level from day. Sitting the number 1 pick for a year or two won't give wins right away.

By the way PURPLE POWER RULES!!! GO VIKES!!!

You'd think that leading your division for 959 out of 960 minutes would be enough to get to the post season.
Eh, what do I know?

I am not going to rip on an ProBowl QB and league MVP in Peyton but...
let's add this caveat when you look at Peyton play the dude succeeds because of a special offensive system in place. I honestly don't know how good he would be in another system. That is a 1 of a kind unique system created for him. He has zero mobility and lacks a deep gun and his passes are not exactly rockets. Plus to keep him Indi is gonna have to dismantle their team.
