The Arizona Cardinals entertained two free agents on Friday, March 5. Defensive end Bert Berry and wide receiver/return specialist Reggie Swinton visited with the coaches and front office.
Berry, a six-year NFL vet of the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos, has been made an offer by the Cardinals.
“Arizona has made a very strong offer to me and one that my agent and I are very pleased with,” offered Berry. “I really feel that me going home today is not me saying ‘no,’ or not even ‘I’ll think about it,' but just to be sure. All things are positive here and I just want to go and talk about it with my family.”
Berry is weighing offers from the Broncos, the Cowboys, and now the Cardinals.
When asked what excited him about the Cardinals he responded, “The freshness of it, the opportunity to play for Coach Green. I think his reputation proceeds him. He’s done a great job over the years of establishing a winning way and just him being here gives the Arizona Cardinals a lot of credibility.”
The Cardinals are looking for a credible pass rusher and Berry did just that in Denver last year, recording a career-high 11.5 sacks in 2003 to lead the Broncos. In comparison, the Cardinals leading defensive pass rusher last year was Dennis Johnson with 3 and Kyle Vanden Bosch the year before with 4.
“The things they want to do from a defensive standpoint with me in it, it definitely gives me an opportunity to maximize my skills and go get the quarterback,” said Berry. “They said they have a need for a pass rusher and I feel that I am a pass rusher so we both have a need for each other.”
Berry likened free agency to college recruiting. With two letter of intents from Notre Dame and Penn State sitting on the table, he decided to sleep on it and go with the team he woke up thinking about in the morning.
Berry may not have his answer first thing tomorrow morning, but he did say he intended to deliver an answer to the Cardinals by 3 p.m. on Saturday.
"I will not drag this out any further than that," he said. "I feel it is only fair especially to Arizona who has made a very favorable offer and one that shows they have a genuine interest and they are serious about what they are trying to do here."
Swinton declined to talk to the media during his visit.
The Cards will continue their free agency search by hosting Tampa’s quarterback Shaun King on Saturday.
King, drafted out of Tulane in the second round of 1999 by the Bucs, was forced into action as a rookie in week 11 and led the Bucs to a 4-1 record while completing 61 percent of his passes. He became one of six rookie quarterbacks to start a playoff game since the 1970 NFL-AFL merger and one of just two rookies to win a playoff contest.
King guided the Bucs to 14 wins over the 1999 and 2000 regular seasons before becoming a backup to quarterback Brad Johnson. He has completed 353 of 632 passes for 3,934 yards and 25 touchdowns.
