Anyone couldn't have done it. Johnson made great draft picks like Leon Lett, Darren Woodson, Eric Williams, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Brock Marion, etc etc.

Jimmy literally hit on 20 picks or so in a 2-3 year span, many of those players became Pro Bowlers.

The nucleus of the Dolphins right now, was built by JJ....

Johnson had a lot of extra picks from the Hershel W swindle to pad his draft record and his Miami teams didn't dominate. While he is a good coach I think he is overrated. I do like his draft strategy of moving down for multiple picks... if you can find the players it makes sense. Let him stay on TV.

Aikman was kind of a no brainer but the rest were all great picks that JJ certainly gets full credit for.

Gil Brandt had called Aikman during his freshman year at OU, he said he throws the most catchable ball I've ever seen. As a senior at UCLA Brandt openly said Aikman was the best prospect in the draft so it was no surprise that Dallas picked him.

I never did include Dennis Green or Jimmy Johnson in my first two "parts" of "Coaching lines" because I found that both of them have a similiar history in that neither ever really did seem to become that much a part of the regular NFL "fraternity", so to speak.

Both of their backgrounds were primarily at the College level, and when they did become head coaches a majority of their assistants tended to be their own college contacts, more than the "normal" "pool" of NFL coaches.

I had told Skkorp that I intended to include them in a part 3, which would cover coaches like them, Bum Phillips, Jim Mora, etc.
But those two definitely stick out as ....not necessarily "renegades", but neither of them that much a part of the normal loop.

To this day, if you look at the 4 Cards candidates, Green is by far the least experienced NFL coach. 10 years in Minnesota, and 2 in San Francisco as an assistant.
Now, whether one considers that a positive or negative, is another whole debate within itself.

Tango...

I think Jimmy Johnson (former cowboys and dolphins coach - not the Eagles DC) actually has less NFL experience than Green..(per his coaching history above for Johnson).

Not that it matters because he was not one of the 4 candidates..just figured I would throw that out...

Sorry for any confusion here.

When I posted about Green and Jimmy Johnson having similiar backrounds/history, I was referring to the former cowboys/Dolphins coach.

I was not including him as one of the 4 Card's candidates..ie...Jim Johnson of the Eagles.
