interesting
early in the spot Keim pretty much says, without naming names, that he regrets letting Rashaud Johnson and / or Powers go in favor of getting faster and more athletic
So, maybe its not the same exact team they had in 2016 ?
Hindsight is 20/20.
It is extremely hard to play defensive back in the NFL, and the system the Cardinals run, one missed tackle = 7 pts.
There is not a single defensive back that has not been in the fan's doghouse that has played for the Cardinals over the last decade. Patrick Peterson is touted as the best cornerback in the game, and he is currently getting roasted on the board this morning.
I really think when it comes to defensive back play, teams have to really hit the reset button, and I mean this on a league wide scale. The Saints being a perfect example. If Brees takes a 3 step drop, and fires the ball out in less than 2 seconds, and hits his mark.......there is not much a team can do against it but hope for a batted ball, bad throw, or really great play by the defensive back.
This type to setup is tilted to the offense. It just is.
Thus, Rashad Johnson getting TORCHED in Carolina last year was bad, but so was watching Brandon Williams get torched this year, or watching Marcus Cooper miss tackles. Yes, Jerraud Powers got beat a lot last year, but did he do any worse than Justin Bethel ?
Was Tyvon Branch much of an improvement ? I like Branch's play, but he is injury prone, and I didn't see too much more from Branch than Powers or Johnson.
Again, hindsight is 20/20. But, then again, it is not like Powers or Johnson broke the bank.
The absolute most frustrating thing about being an athlete is that when you are young, your have the ability to make up for your mental lapses, and when you get older, you have the mental part of the game down, and that makes up for your dwindling ability.
The problem is when your ability cannot make up for your mental screw ups, or your mental capabilities no longer can make up for your lack of physical ability.
None of this even addressed the fact that Mathieu becoming a shell of player he is paid to be is the biggest issue of all, and that our "Nickel Back" is being paid as a top safety, but doesn't play safety like a top safety.
The Cardinals secondary was pretty good in 2016, maybe the old adage of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" could have been applied, but then again, hindsight is 20/20.
Interesting topic going into the offseason that is for sure.
