4th Round--- Kenny Iwebema DE/OLB

Personally I was hoiping for Moore and though of Kenny as more of a 5th round guy, but it is what it is I guess.

Thoughts....

Did the Cards just reach a bit for this guy? Seems like a pick you make in the 5th or 6th round. I guess its just warm bodies at this point anyway.

Overview

A strong, physical defender, Kenny Iwebema had problems staying healthy for an entire season for the Hawkeyes. He has lost playing time due to a pair of concussions (2005 and 2007), a broken right collarbone and triceps tendon damage (2006) and with a right shoulder sprain (2007). He also sat out the 2006 season opener while trying to get academic clearance.

When healthy and motivated, Iwebema has proven to be a capable defensive end. He is more effective containing the run than rushing the passer, but has been known to deliver bone-jarring hits on ballcarriers. He also uses his arm length, reach and leaping ability to excel on special teams, having blocked four kicks during his career.

Hell no. We just made a crapola pick. Other teams are still getting starters. Dre Moore just got picked one spot ahead of us. That is a huge differential in skill right there.

kinda of a Dockett clone -- high motor, high effort, relentless

very productive soph season where he was a terror, injured his junior year, average his senior year

Clearly Wis has concluded he needs more DE depth on this team

according to nfldraftcountdown

trengths:
Has good size and a solid frame...Strong and powerful...Is tough and plays with a nasty demeanor...A pretty good athlete...Stout against the run...Hard worker with a good motor...Nice hands and sheds blockers well...Can play in multiple schemes.

Weaknesses:
Lacks ideal speed and quickness...Does not always play with proper leverage...He won't threaten off the edge...Might have some durability concerns...Wasn't overly productive...He does not have an impressive puss rush repertoire..Limited upside.

Notes:
Classic base end who could project to either a 4-3 or a 3-4 scheme...Notched two sacks against Wisconsin and Joe Thomas in 2005...Dealt with ankle and shoulder injuries in college..Good two down player but will never be an impact pass rusher.

So he is solid against the run with a limited pass repertoire but succeeded against Joe Thomas. Sounds like someone who with good coaching could be solid.

seems we are really looking at run stopping DE's. Well if your plan is for CB's to win the game in stopping the pass it will be a very long season.

this is from TSN:

Ken Iwebema

War Room analysis
Strengths: Is a good athlete, with quickness and agility to change direction and make plays. Has strength to jolt offensive tackles with hard hand punch, and then beat them with secondary pass-rush moves. Shows a quick spin move, and beats offensive tackles inside with quick burst underneath. When playing with good leverage and aggressive hand usage, jolts run blockers upright and makes tackles. Is smart, and reads plays well. Accelerates quickly down the line to tackle ballcarriers from behind.

Weaknesses: Should make more plays than he does. Must become much more consistent shedding blocks at the point of attack. Lacks explosiveness to threaten the corner as a speed rusher. Does not work hard every snap. Tends to play upright, and struggles to hold his ground. Often looks mechanical. Does not make many impact plays.

Bottom line: Iwebema is a frustrating prospect: He flashes a lot of ability but just isn't as productive as he should be. Iwebema has the talent to be a quality NFL starter in a 4-3 scheme, but he must become much more aggressive and productive. If not, he will become a journeyman.

He's a very hard choice to figure. It would seem the Cards have enough depth at this spot already. This guy's career was mostly one of unfulfilled potential. He was repeatedly chosen to preseason All American teams only to contribute medium levels of productivity. He had major shoulder surgery and this may be part of the problem, but I’m not certain this guy even makes the team despite his athletic skill level, which is significant.

He's my pick this year to not make it out of camp with the team.

I was thinking that as well, but keep in mind we will already have Chike, Berry, Darnell and LaBoy coming after the passer. When we were healthy last year we did a good job of getting after the QB and limiting his time w/ the ball IMO.

Is he projected to compete with Bertrand Berry? Kind of a DE / OLB hybrid that spends most of his time on the line.

the guy beat Joe Thomas for 2 sacks, that shows potential.. looks like he could be good. If nothing else, solid Special Teams

I liked Abibi better in this spot, but Whis didn't so I will defer to his judgement
