Was he seeking a huge deal? Why not just offer him a contract? The DJ deal stings, but you need a running back.

I'm guessing the Cardinals did make Drake an offer but he probably wants to test the market. If he gets a much better offer the Cardinals can let him walk.

With the WR problem resolved with the addition of Hopkins, I hope they go OL at #8 and then trade up in the second round and secure a RB to replace Drake. Let Drake walk. I am not convinced he is the long term answer at RB. His history doesn't point to it. Almost every mock you read has at best one RB going in the first round. Lot's of options to get one in the second.

Still if the Cardinals keep Drake and add Hopkins, their offense is well on it's way and they can address the offensive line or defense in the draft.

Poison pill language was removed a few years back.

I don't think the transition tag gets used very much anymore.

What are the details?

Can you sign and trade like the franchise tag?

Does this mean 10m is what Drake will average in new deal or is this a power move by the Cardinals to be able to match deals?

Edit - looks like 8.4m?

After reading five different explanations of the transition tag here is how I understand it. The team that places the transition tag on a player can match any offer by another team made to that player. It must match exactly what the other team offered in every detail and has 7 days to decide to match it. Drake can decide to sign the transition contract and receive either the average of the top 10 running backs or 120% of his previous salary whichever is greater. If Drake signs the Tag contract he is no longer a FA for 2020. In Drake's case he would receive the average amount which is $8.4 million. It would be for one year and then Drake would become a FA again.

I did not come across anything regarding sing and then trade. It was not mentioned in any of the articles.

The reason the transition tag doesn't get used much is because it's still a pretty large contract to sign a player to (top 10 salaries vs top 5 for the franchise tag) and if they decide not to match, then they get nothing in return. It would be paramount to releasing the player.

Honestly, Im fine with letting him walk if he gets another offer that is vastly different than what we are wanting to pay.

Make him our best offer, and let him test the market. If he can beat it by alot, let him go and roll with Edmonds and a Rookie RB.

Will be tough to trade back into 2nd round, without trading down in 1st...or trading a future 1st/multiple picks.

I want this team to address the DL and LBs with all of their picks....

Trading into the 2nd round this year will cost a first next year and thus won't happen. Drake is transition tagged for 2020 - and one can find a quality RB in the 3rd or 4rh rd.

You don’t trade *UP* for a RB in this economy.

Drake is transition tagged and can seek a deal out there. Cards can then match.

No compensation back to the Cardinals if someone signs of Drake

I think the team is rolling the dice here. I don't think they are actually going to sign Drake for the $8.4 MILLION. I think they are hoping someone, anyone offers him a contract to some extent lower than the transition amount. If a team makes an offer the Cardinals like, they match, if it's above what they really want to pay, they let him walk, and if no one makes an offer then they pull the tag and offer him a contract similar to what they may already offered him. The only fly in the ointment is if Drake jumped at the transition offer and even then they can still pull it. It's my understanding a team can pull this tag any time. He already a free agent so if they didn't use the tag, they were going to get nothing anyhow. This way they can have some skin in the game with options. I suspect Drake would like more than a one year deal which is why he's testing the market.

It's not an offer that team "X" makes, but whether Drake accepts it and the Cards then have the option to match.

I still don't like Drake, but using the transition tag makes sense with the departure of DJ. I'm hoping for a conservative deal where Drake gets paid less than he wants, and we can figure things out in the draft.

I'd love to see what the market ends up like for Gordon or something... could really transform the offense.

I know you guys disagree, but we'll see. He's drawing a lot of interest, and is more proven. He was dumb holding out last year, but I think he has more in him.

I certainly wouldn't pay him $10m per year.
More proven at what?

He didn’t even crack 4.0 YPC until this past season & still managed to get benched for his backup!!!!

I wouldn’t pay him $10mill either but I damn sure wouldn’t sign Gordon as a backup plan.

I'd be leery about signing Gordon at all.
