I think the concept of BPA is mostly outdated. Since the arrival of the cap, teams are mostly focused on BPA of players who address needs. Teams certainly shouldn’t bypass potential Pro Bowl players to attack a need. In the Cards’ case they have enough needs that draft to attack one shouldn’t be a problem. Part of the game is how much do you trust your scouting staff? When Ossenfort arrived I doubt he felt much trust. Now that should have changed. It’s time to back them and solve problems. I strongly disagree with the concept that all good Edges will be gone by the 16th pick. Certainly a DT or two will be there. I understand the idea of taking an Oline guy, but I’d move down to do so.
But for me that is the intrigue of this draft and the 16th pick. This is a solid draft class on paper. Not Good, not bad. It's lacking QBs used to a "normal draft", but talent on other positions is there. A really good player will be there at 16th. The question is just at what position?
I believe that the rotational players are currently there at DL. We are serverely lacking top-end talent and that needs to be adressed.
My approach would be (in order):
1. Swing for the fences and trade the 1st rounder for an Elite edge (Crosby, Garrett, Parson)
- Do whatever you can (trade) to spend the second pick a big body NT. There seem to be a group of DTs projected in the low first to mid 2nd.
If that doesn't happen. Sign Reddick on a high value, short deal. Him paired with with BJ, Browning and Collins is still a vast improvement.
- That gives you the flexibility to double down if the right Edge is there at 16. - Draft the right DT at 16.
- Move down a bit and pick a DT or OT in the 20s
- Use the potential extra draft capital to move up in the 2nd.
