St. Louis Rams: (1-8)
Depth Chart: http://www.stlouisrams.com/Team/DepthCharts/
Team Stats: http://www.nfl.com/teams/st.louisrams/profile?team=STL
Injuries (coming later today): http://www.nfl.com/injuries
Quick Breakdown:
This is an away, division game. That in itself is enough to throw out the fact the Rams are 1-8. No less than a week ago this 1-8 team had the undefeated, top-ranked Saints in some hot water where New Orleans was very, very lucky to come away with a win. The Cardinals need to approach this game with a lot of respect, and motivation. They must come out of the gates fast. Mentally, it would be safe to assume the Rams are very fragile, and if we get in front of this team earlier, it will gone a long way towards another win.
This game is not "MUST WIN", it is a "HAVE TO WIN". There is no excuse if the Rams come away with a victory this week. ZERO. No disresepect to the Rams but the Cardinals are, by far, the better team. Hopefully the Cardinals will play like it.
Offense:
Stephen Jackson. He is a top RB in this league, and is having a monster year for the Rams. The Cardinals have had success stopping Jackson, but it will be a challenge his week because the health of our defense is questionable at best. The wild card in this situation is that you challenge the Rams to pass, and Marc Bulger & Donnie Avery have the potential to do some serious damage as well. The key for the Cardinals is to attack the Rams offensive line which is either young at one position, or just plain awful at another.
The Cardinals defense has no choice but to stop Stephen Jackson. You have to attack the sure bet, which is Jackson, and hope that Bulger stays in his state of mediocrity. Beyong that, get Will Davis, Campbell, Dockett, Haggans, etc. geared up to put a lot of pressure on the Rams during passing situations where they are most vunerable. Not to mention if we put DRC on Donnie Avery and he can negate him then it leaves the Rams with nothing in the passing attack because their #2 WR Gibson is gone for the season after last week.
Defense:
Steve Spagnuolo is coaching the heck out of this defense that has little talent. If we don't take care of Leonard Little he will kill us in some way, shape, or form as he usually does. Beyond that, their is a lot of youth, and B league players on the squad. The safeties are decent but nothing to make anyone nervous about. Spagnuolo will have his team prepare, and focused, I am sure of it.
I could be analytical about what the Cardinals must do on offense, but seriously why bother. Our offense should take this team behind the wood shed and beat to hell and back. I think the entire Rams secondary couldn't cover Fitzgerald if they tried, let alone when Boldin and Breaston are also out there. If the Cardinals keep Little under control then Warner should have ample time, ala the Jacksonville game, to shred the Rams defense. Not to mention the Rams are 28th against the run, and Beanie is just about to explode.
My Thoughts through 10 weeks:
The fish stays for another 2 weeks. Yet, I am very happy with last week's win. Seattle showed up to play, and make a statement. The Cardinals absorbed the early surge by Seattle, counter punched late in the first half, and finished the job in the second half. The Caridnal running game is showing its first signs of CONSISTENT improvement over the last few weeks, and there is not a person in the NFL that doesn't realize how powerful our offense will become with not just a threat of a running but an effective running game.
On defense our team is getting a little banged up, and strange as it sounds I think it is a good thing. I agree with Whiz's conservative approach, but injuries force players to go play even if they are deemed "not ready". I want to see Will Davis in more passing situations, I want to see Greg Toler playing more CB, I want to see Rashad Johnson play, and Ali Highsmith is not going to get any better prepared sitting on the bench.
I try not to look past the week's opponent, but the Seattle game last week, and the Rams game this week are games the Cardinals have to win because they are the better team. It will be a feather in the cap of the Cardinals if they beat both teams, and walk into Tennesse at 7-3. This week is all about taking care of business. If the Cardinals do this, they get an "atta boy" and a notch in the belt of improvement. They need to take this step forward this week, for the oppourtunity to erradicate some demons from earlier on this year.
