St. Louis Rams: (1-8)

Depth Chart: http://www.stlouisrams.com/Team/DepthCharts/

Team Stats: http://www.nfl.com/teams/st.louisrams/profile?team=STL

Injuries (coming later today): http://www.nfl.com/injuries

Quick Breakdown:
This is an away, division game. That in itself is enough to throw out the fact the Rams are 1-8. No less than a week ago this 1-8 team had the undefeated, top-ranked Saints in some hot water where New Orleans was very, very lucky to come away with a win. The Cardinals need to approach this game with a lot of respect, and motivation. They must come out of the gates fast. Mentally, it would be safe to assume the Rams are very fragile, and if we get in front of this team earlier, it will gone a long way towards another win.

This game is not "MUST WIN", it is a "HAVE TO WIN". There is no excuse if the Rams come away with a victory this week. ZERO. No disresepect to the Rams but the Cardinals are, by far, the better team. Hopefully the Cardinals will play like it.

Offense:
Stephen Jackson. He is a top RB in this league, and is having a monster year for the Rams. The Cardinals have had success stopping Jackson, but it will be a challenge his week because the health of our defense is questionable at best. The wild card in this situation is that you challenge the Rams to pass, and Marc Bulger & Donnie Avery have the potential to do some serious damage as well. The key for the Cardinals is to attack the Rams offensive line which is either young at one position, or just plain awful at another.

The Cardinals defense has no choice but to stop Stephen Jackson. You have to attack the sure bet, which is Jackson, and hope that Bulger stays in his state of mediocrity. Beyong that, get Will Davis, Campbell, Dockett, Haggans, etc. geared up to put a lot of pressure on the Rams during passing situations where they are most vunerable. Not to mention if we put DRC on Donnie Avery and he can negate him then it leaves the Rams with nothing in the passing attack because their #2 WR Gibson is gone for the season after last week.

Defense:
Steve Spagnuolo is coaching the heck out of this defense that has little talent. If we don't take care of Leonard Little he will kill us in some way, shape, or form as he usually does. Beyond that, their is a lot of youth, and B league players on the squad. The safeties are decent but nothing to make anyone nervous about. Spagnuolo will have his team prepare, and focused, I am sure of it.

I could be analytical about what the Cardinals must do on offense, but seriously why bother. Our offense should take this team behind the wood shed and beat to hell and back. I think the entire Rams secondary couldn't cover Fitzgerald if they tried, let alone when Boldin and Breaston are also out there. If the Cardinals keep Little under control then Warner should have ample time, ala the Jacksonville game, to shred the Rams defense. Not to mention the Rams are 28th against the run, and Beanie is just about to explode.

My Thoughts through 10 weeks:
The fish stays for another 2 weeks. Yet, I am very happy with last week's win. Seattle showed up to play, and make a statement. The Cardinals absorbed the early surge by Seattle, counter punched late in the first half, and finished the job in the second half. The Caridnal running game is showing its first signs of CONSISTENT improvement over the last few weeks, and there is not a person in the NFL that doesn't realize how powerful our offense will become with not just a threat of a running but an effective running game.
On defense our team is getting a little banged up, and strange as it sounds I think it is a good thing. I agree with Whiz's conservative approach, but injuries force players to go play even if they are deemed "not ready". I want to see Will Davis in more passing situations, I want to see Greg Toler playing more CB, I want to see Rashad Johnson play, and Ali Highsmith is not going to get any better prepared sitting on the bench.
I try not to look past the week's opponent, but the Seattle game last week, and the Rams game this week are games the Cardinals have to win because they are the better team. It will be a feather in the cap of the Cardinals if they beat both teams, and walk into Tennesse at 7-3. This week is all about taking care of business. If the Cardinals do this, they get an "atta boy" and a notch in the belt of improvement. They need to take this step forward this week, for the oppourtunity to erradicate some demons from earlier on this year.

This game worries me. If they beat New Orleans I'd say we have this in the bag, but after coming soooo close to beating NO, this team will either be beaten down or extremely fired up. Also, as the cellar dwellars in our division, they should come out swinging to try and beat us.

This is one of those "I told you so" games.

If the Cards win it's "I told you that we are the number one team in the West".

I the Cards lose it's "I told you this team cannot stay focused".

I think the Cards match last years record of 7-3 after 10 games and I hope I can come back and say "I told you so"!!:D

Rugby after seeing your posted picture I want you to walk on and take Kreiders job and be our lead blocker for Beanie this year. You look ready.

Also I don't think the rams in anyway shape or form can cover our passing game. They just don't have the people. They are out manned. It could turn into a shootout as they try to slow the game down and pound us with Jackson but I doubt it will stop us from putting 7 on the board everytime we get the ball.

We keep Little off of Warner and we've done our job as an offensive line and they have no one to stay with our recievers.I'm also looking at a VERY BIG DAY for both Beanie and Hightower against the pourous defensive line with just one linebacker that normally makes tackles pass the first down marker. He's consistent yet normally late in Lauranitis from OSU.

The rams are picking up recievers off the street this week and I doubt Bulger has another season game two games in a row.It would be almost a miracle to ever happen.Kurt loves playing in that dome for some reason and I'll never figure it out.One day they're gonna get some bright lights in there and you'll be able to see for once.Darkest dome in the league.

I'm excited for a good ol' Dockett vs Incognito battle.

For those of you who don't follow twitter (i do too much, economics and accounting are really boring) i'll catch you up.

Dockett was talking one day and someone said something along the lines of 'i can't wait to see you get stone walled by incognito again'

Dockett responded with 'know why his name is incognito? cause he IS incognito and he don't block s***'

trust me guys, there is no love lost between those two, its gonna be a good one to keep an eye on Sunday.

Call up Whiz. I am ready.

But I don't need pads.......pads are for wussies.

I got at least two good seasons in me before my torn up rugby body falls completely apart.......and make sure we play the Ravens, I would love to put Ray Lewis on his ass.

Post #1 in this thread Rugby should have been something like this:

"Rams suck and we dont. We better come prepared and not lose."

Would have been quicker and covered all basis. :)

Hey Shane-----might have been quicker, but not nearly so interesting. I love the way Muffin gets descriptive. He has a certain flair that I long for when I go to this board. I would have loved seeing him in battle on the green. Guy is a man's man. :D

Thanks. It is really nice to hear that people like reading this stuff. Anytime I can add to the board is a great feeling.

As for me playing ? Here is the only picture I can find of me playing rugby. One of the few where I don't look like I am going to die of lack of oxygen.

And yes, it was raining a little bit that day. I am the guy in the blue and gray about to dive into that puddle after the ball.

I think all long time Cardinal fans have PhDs in the psychology of bad teams.

I have to say beaten down in this case. To get close and to fail is a tough one to rebound from.

Matchup Stuff Below the Radar...

Pro Football Outsiders has so much esoteric statistical stuff that it makes my brain hurt. That said, some nuggets. So far this year:

- Cards are significantly more efficient than than the Rams on Offense, Defense and Special Teams.

- Cards have sacked their opponents 25 times (Warner's been sacked 15. Ram QB's have been sacked 18).

- Cards have trouble with other teams' top receivers (Avery?) and TE's (McMichael or Fell?) but wail on their opponents' #2, 3, 4 and 5 receivers and RB's catching out of the backfield (Jackson).

- According to PFO's esoteric way of rating team efficiencies on offense and defense - despite the presence of Steven Jackson, the Rams only rank #17 in rushing offense. The Cards rank #16 in rush defense.

- Rams like to run off right tackle 21% of the time (vs. a league average of 14%). They are most effective running off left tackle (#1 in the league) and right tackle (#5 in the league) but suck trying to run around right end (#30 in league).

- Cards are strong vs. the run across the board (ranking #6 against runs around right end and from #9 - #11 in the league everywhere else).

- Ram defense is rated #32 overall by PFO. (#30th against the pass and #28 against the run).

- PFO ranks the Cardinal passing offense #8 and running attack #22.

- Card pass blockers rank #9 against the sack. Ram pass rushers rank #14 in sack-ratings (PFO numbers incorporate sacks per passing attempt)

- StL is considered poor against opposing #1 WR's (#22 ranked), #2 WR's (#18 ranked) and All Other WR's (#26 ranked) and TE's (#28 ranked). However, they do a dynamite job defending against RB's catching out of the backfield (they rank #6).

- Cards like to run to their right (73% of the time - up the gut, off RT or around RE) but are most effective running to their left (#1 in league off LT and #11 around LE).

- There's not a lot of difference between the special teams other than Josh Brown missing 1 of 3 FG attempts each from 30 - 39 yards, 40 - 59 yards and over 50 yards.

That's all I got.

I don't buy the "well they played the Saints close so we should worry" stuff. Remember last year they beat Washington, then Dallas by 20 and followed that with a close loss at home to the Patriots (by 7) and we still went in there and won by 3 TDs? They were coming off their best 3 game stretch and this Cardinal team still went in there and spanked them...I expect more of the same this season.

Bottom line is the Rams have 1 win and rank statistically near the bottom in every defensive category for a reason. If we lose to them its because bad Kurt(Carolina Kurt) showed up and the team imploded not for any other reason.

Great stuff, to both Rug and Jeff!
Every game has me worried, this one is no exception.
I'd like to see the Cards continue to work on the run game.

I totally agree SuperSpck. This is the week we should try to run,run,run..If need be we can catch back up with our no huddle offense and score like we did last week.

I see holes in this rams defense like none other we've played this year. The rookie Lauranitis leads the team in tackles but he is a total finesse player. This is the team to run on and get great team practice doing it.I hope Whiz has us running isolation plays all game long and we must get Kreider blocking better for us moving forward. We need to be able to make a fourth and one if need be coming up against some teams.

Now is the time to get those plays down pat with our running backs and blockers.

I have to say the pass defense is just as week and we know what we have on our team passing wise if we choose to get out to a lead and then go play that running game.I know the mix is what we want but I'd like to see us run the ball for 1st down after 1st down, going down the field.

Plus dear LORD please help all the injured people on our team get well. The list just keeps growing.11 games to go maximum.Let us be able to hold out that long.:)

With 4 of the next five on the road we'll see how tough our guys are. With this goofball schedule the Cards really picked a great time to start winning road games consistently.

We only get to see them once live between last Sunday until a couple of days after Christmas. So we'll get to see how tough we are at handling tailgating withdrawals.
