Yeah and they haven't even kept up with what they defined as technicals from the beginning of the season (unless your name is Amare Stoudemire or Rasheed Wallace, then you can still get a tech for waving off a ref).

Your right. Their inconsistency is what bothers me the most.

I don't think rough play had anything to do with it. It was just to stop the whining.

AFAIK, there have been no rule changes in regards to rough play.

I remember reading something at the beginning of the season about the league wanting to crack down on rough play to try to help clean up the thuggish image of the NBA.

Just like he wasn't looking at Raja when he repeatedly caught him with elbows in the face last year. If you think Kobe has no idea where his defender is then why does he throw his elbow back in a clear out motion and why is his elbow so high in the air?

Of course he knows he is there, and yes he's clearing him out. On the play that Raja got popped that someone posted on this thread, Raja is hanging on Kobe, hand in his back, leaning around him and reaching in. A clear out elbow is gonna connect with face. Did Kobe want it to? Probably.

That's a different scenario even. Kobe was posting on Raja, and catching a ball with Raja hanging on him...yes, Kobe knew where he was and hit him square with the clearout. However on a drive or flailing his arms in a split second during a shot, he can't aim and hit. Sorry, there's no buying that.

Never said Kobe doesn't use his elbows purposefully, Mike Miller can attest to that.

The 1st time it happened I could see it as being incidental, but still a ridiculous non-basketball play. When the same play happens again from a different angle and the same result occurs, it really looks a lot less like an accident. The Korver play isn't as bad as the other two, but the league really seems to want to send a message to Kobe to stop hitting people in the face with his elbows. I don't know if it's arrogance or stupidity (probably a combination of both) on his part to keep throwing high elbows in the closing seconds of games when he knows he's under scrutiny by the league.

Update time:

Kobe will NOT be suspended, but rather, the league retroactively assessed Bryant with a flagrant foul for the elbow to Kyle Korver

That's a good call. I would've been happy if the refs had called an offensive foul on the play during the game and that was the end of it, but since they missed it (shocker) this works.

Now this I do not have a problem with. Like I was mentioning before, this was the way that the league used to review problems. I still do not think that his elbow was worth a flagrant foul, but it shouldn't be a flagrant 2, suspension type foul either.

That was a good call by the league because it's still a "cease and desist" order. The last elbow was not as bad as the first two but the potential was there. To ignore it would have given Kobe a go-ahead flag again. FF1s earn a 1-point penalty, FF2s are 2 points -- if he keeps it up and hits 5 points that means another suspension. This penalty sends a another message and, all things considered, it seems very reasonable.

The bottom line is that the league is definitely taking notice into Kobe's antics. And others should follow suit

Pretty soon Kobe is going to run out of white players to elbow. Nash and Piakowski better watch out.

Miller, Manu, Jaric, Kover. All four times, the league found the offense enough to issue 3 suspensions and a retroactive flagrant. I intend to insinuate causation, but i think its interesting to note.
