LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Speaking for the first time since his arrest for sexual assault, Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant told Sunday's Los Angeles Times that he was innocent, saying "I would never do something like that."

"When everything comes clean, it will all be fine, you'll see," Bryant told the newspaper in what it described as a brief telephone interview.

Bryant, 24, declined to discuss details of the case, in which a 19-year-old woman who works as a concierge at a posh resort in Edwards, Colorado, has accused him of sexually assaulting her, the newspaper said.

Bryant surrendered to Colorado police on July 4 on a felony arrest warrant issued by a judge. The case has been sealed by the court so few details of the alleged attack are known.

Prosecutors are expected to decide whether to bring charges this week against Bryant, a five-time NBA all-star and one of the most popular American athletes with corporate advertisers.

"But you guys know me, I shouldn't have to say anything," Bryant told the newspaper. "You know I would never do anything like that."

Bryant, the Lakers leading scorer, was in Colorado for surgery on his knee at the prestigious Steadman Hawkins Clinic. The alleged assault occurred at The Lodge and Spa at Cordillera on June 30.

The Colorado state crime laboratory has been analyzing unspecified evidence in the case. The Los Angeles Times said Bryant went to the Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, Colorado to deliver a DNA sample to authorities on July 1.

He flew back to Los Angeles later that day but then returned to Colorado on July 4 to turn himself in on an arrest warrant issued by a district judge. He posted a $25,000 bond and was released.

Bryant sounded surprised at some of the rumors circulating about what happened on June 30 without elaborating, the newspaper said.

"Man there's a lot of crazy stories out there," he said.

Why didn't he just say, "Yeah, I committed adultery, but sexual assault? No way."

Instead, he insinuates that he didn't do anything wrong.

Legally, he didn't do anything wrong, according to him.
IM not saying he played it right or did the right thing, but seriously, if there have been no criminal charges filed against you, and if you truly believe that you didn't do anything wrong and that no charges would be filed against you (this is speculation on my part) then why would you admit to wrong doing? Especially a private wroing doing that is of absolutely no business to anyone else.

Isnt that scenario at least plausible?

Damn. And in that other thread I freaked out, ranted and raved and said I was out of this crap. I suck.

Why should he have to?
The way I read that article he said 'I would never do anything like (commit an assault)'. Obiviously many people feel he lied to them. I just don't see it that way.

He insinuated that he had done NOTHING wrong. Like I said before, he had every opportunity to release a statement saying, "I committed adultery" prior to charges being filed but he never did that. If you were in his shoes, arrested, taken to the hospital for tests and had a two day window before the public even knew about this....wouldn't you have gotten the truth out as soon as possible to convey your innocence?

No Ryan I would have told the truth to my attorney but I would have said as little as possible to the media except to deny the charges.

Personally I don't care if he committed adultery. Just because he is Kobe Bryant basketball star why should I care more than I would about any other guy who cheats on his wife. If it was someone I knew it would bother me. I guess I didn't care that much about Kobe to begin with, other than as a basketball player.

But people (and Kobe himself) are saying that he would never do that--and yet, 2 weeks ago, none of us would have thought he would have committed adultery either! So how much do you think you know him? How much do any of us know him?

But Kobe DID do something wrong.

Even if he didn't rape her, he STILL committed adultery.

He lied.

Great questions. We don't know him, and obviously he isn't the person he made himself out to be regardless of whether he committed rape or not.

To me, adultery is "like" sexual assault. It's not the same thing, but they are "alike." Bryant apparently doesn't think so, since he said he didn't do anything "like" sexual assault. It is a Clintonesque shading of meanings.

I don't see where he said that he didn't commit adultery.
I understood exactly what he was saying.

I guess I never had any illusions that I knew him at all. He could have been doing anything for all I knew.

I suppose I am jaded after Jason Kidd. I wanted to think he was a good guy. Turns out he not such a nice guy after all. Why should Kobe be any different?

I'm confused. What are you saying? I said that 2 weeks ago none of us would have guessed that he committed adultery. What are we going to think 2 weeks from now? The point is we just don't know.

It sounds like you are on the fence, you don't like the fact that he committed adultery, but you appear to be a little lenient with the sexual assault charge.

I have only weighed in because some people said he is a liar.

All I'm saying is I don't think he lied.

People assumed he would not commit adultery. I don't think he is responsible for people's assumptions about him (even if they are carefully crafted by his publicist).

If he is found guilty of a crime he should go to jail. Other than that I don't really care what he does.

They aren't alike in any way. Sexual assault is a serious crime, adultery is a moral issue that people don't go to jail for.

If no charges were filed, nobody had to know about him committing adultery except for he, his wife, and a select number of people. Since they were filed, Kobe had to come out and admit it.

He, nor other any person(male or female) in America owes it to the world to come out and admit adultery. However, since he was charged with sexual assault he came out and told the public he committed adultery to try and save a little face. The people who are big players in the case most likely knew, but they didn't tell you. Does that make them liars, too?

That is absolutely false. Both are acts of violence against women. One is an act of physical violence, and the other is an act of emotional violence.

Ask any woman who has been cheated on (except for one in an "open marriage"). She'll feel violated, ashamed, humiliated -- similar to what a rape victim feels. In both cases, the man knows that what he is doing will hurt the woman -- even if he convinces himself that the rape victim "wants it" or the wife won't find out -- and he does it anyway. In both cases, he is angry; the aggression that comes with testosterone rages out of control.

Both acts represent a breakdown in the socialized emasculation of the male.

No they didn't say anything, because first of all, they haven't held any national press conferences to talk about the case, and secondly because it could compromise the case.

Kobe would only have helped himself if he had admitted wrongdoing in the first place. Saying that he had done nothing wrong is a lie, he committed adultery. This is a black and white situation, no gray areas at all.

.

Please provide a link to where he said he did nothing wrong.

Last time I checked, adultery wasn't committing a crime. He never said he did nothing wrong, he just claimed he was innocent of the charges.

You guys can spin his quotes in every which way possible, but I'd like to see a link where it specifically quotes Kobe on his "I did nothing wrong" statement.

We do know that Bryant doesn't win the candor award. A few days earlier, he insisted, "I shouldn't have to say anything. You know I'd never do something like that."

That sounded like a blanket denial, which was amended later to, "I didn't force her to do anything against her will."

"I shouldn't have to say anything. You know I'd never do something like that."

Of course it sounded like a denial, IT WAS. He denied sexually assaulting this young lady. The question wasn't specific, was it?

So neither you or I know what he was denying. I think he was denying the sexual assault charges, you think he was denying any wrongdoing.

I am still not seeing a link to him saying he did nothing wrong. I've been asking you guys since Saturday for that link, and not one of you have provided that link. You have provided another vague statement that anyone can put a spin job on.

You cannot take what people say out of context (which is what the article does).

Kobe answered with "I shouldn't have to say anything. You know I'd never do something like that." only after being asked if the accusations of sexual assault were true or not.

It wasn't a blanket denial. It was an answer which did not deny sexual activity, only sexual assault. He was likely coached by his lawyers on exactly what to say.

You intrepret it the way you want, I intrepret it the way I want.

Either way, he still did do something wrong, and his answer was almost indignant. Oh me? I'd never do anything like that! (what is that?)

That is very true though.

I haven't exactly heard the context, and most of us haven't.

That's the way it has been, except most of you keep insisting on him denying any wrongdoing.

I have to admit, that now that I see context, it doesn't seem like he was lying. But I still maintain that he should have admitted adultery right off the bat.

He asked where he said that I provided a quote. You nor I know what has really happened. I will not support Kobe or any man/woman that is involved in adultery or an instigator in rape. I don't understand how some people can become emotionally involved in a case/issue that doesn't affect them. Kobe is GUILTY OF ADULTERY!!!! He has to deal with it not us. Kobe is on trial not us. Well maybe some of us are on trial as well?? I just don't know and don't care to know.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on this point.

I'm sick of hearing it brushed off as a mistake, like "Oops, did we just have sex?"

I don't think anybody here is condoning his mistake. It's a mistake, everyone makes them. I don't know how long it's been going on, whether or not Vanessa has cheated on him, or what. I am not one to judge a person based on one mistake. Everyone deserves a second chance in my eyes. If indeed he sexually assaulted her, I will lose all respect for Kobe.

Stefan and I have been arguing his innocence. I think we all agree cheating is despicable.
