Dirk Koetter will not return next season as Arizona State football coach, sources said today. Second-year Athletic Director Lisa Love will discuss Koetter's dismissal tonight after the ASU football banquet. Koetter also is expected to speak with the media.

Koetter is 40-33 (21-28 Pac-10) in six seasons at ASU. He is under contract through Jan. 6, 2010 under terms of a two-year extension approved by the Arizona Board of Regents in March.

He is owed $2,850,000 in guaranteed salary for 2007-09 unless a settlement is reached with ASU as part of a resignation. ASU completed its regular season with a 7-5 record after defeating Arizona 28-14 on Saturday. The Sun Devils will play in a third straight bowl game, probably the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 21 or the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco on Dec. 27.

It's unknown if Koetter, 47, will coach in the bowl game.

It is about time. It will be interesting to see how the coaching search plays out. If the basketball hire provides any evidence, i feel very comfortable. I do hope we keep Bill Miller, but i am worried he may be gone as well. His defense was the lone bright spot on a bad season. Go Devils

ASU fires football coach Dirk Koetter By Scott Bordow, TribuneNovember 26, 2006Dirk Koetter's reign as Arizona State's football coach has come to an end. A source close to the program said Koetter was fired Sunday morning by vice president of athletics Lisa Love.A second source said Koetter told Arizona coach Mike Stoops after Saturday's game that he was done as the Sun Devils coach.

It appears Koetter will coach ASU in its upcoming bowl game, however. The Sun Devils will play in one of three bowls - Las Vegas Bowl, Emerald Bowl, or Hawaii Bowl - affiliated with the Pac-10.

Koetter has a 40-33 record at ASU

Very interesting. Great job by Dirk on Saturday, especially if he knew he was done

Had to be done.

Koetter new his head was on the line when he made the Sam Keller decision. And, that's precisely when he lost this team, alumni, and media (even more so, if that's possible).

Always sad to see a Devil get axed, but this tells me Lisa Love and Michael Crow want to spend the $$$ necessary to get this program to another level.

Way to kick the UofA's ass, though, Dirk.

:fans:Now lets hope Lisa Love does as good a job as she did getting a basketball coach. Hopefully now we'll have good coaches in all 3 main sports. And the football team has some talented young players so I don't see them getting worse with a staff chance unless players decide to leave.

Its a bittersweat day. I tried my very best to support Koetter, in fact up until the UCLA game, I hadn't made my mind up that I wanted him to go. He was young, and ASU was his dream job. I hoped he would turn ASU around and be here for 20 years. Ah well, it wasn't meant to be.

My only concern now is, Zack Miller will probably jump to the pros for sure, and Rudy C may transfer, severely weakening next years team.

This has been the dream scenario. We win big against the Cats, and then fire our coach for underperforming for the season (actually, the last few years). This should send a clear signal to potential candidates that we want a winner - middle of road is not a 'winner'. Though we may lose Zach Miller (thought he was going anyway) and Rudy (he undermined the program in August), we can now begin building a championship contender. I don't think we can be USC (competing year after year in the top 5) but we should be a 'California'.

I can't hate a coach that beats the UofA but I agree that it is time for a change. The Devils have been underachieving.

Good luck Dirk.

True. I hope he goes on to coordinate an offense that averages 45 points a game...as long as it's not in the Pac. :)

I'm thrilled.... I never thought they would take the hit on the 2.8 million buyout. Especially after a serious thumping of the UofA giving them an out. It restores my faith in ASU leadership. It was in shambles after they kept Evans around too long and gave Koetter an extension after last season.

What I thought was weird was that they are holding their football banquet tonight and this was going to be discussed. Should be an interesting dinner, is Koetter going to hand out awards to the players, then the AD will get up and say he's fired??

I think they wanted to keep it quiet until the banquet was over. At least that's what Bordow was saying in the paper this morning. Sounds like Koetter was the one letting some people know and it leaked.

I think I speak on behalf of many when I say this..

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out Dirk.

In all seriousness, this change was WELL overdue. Not only did this team underachieve badly, they severely lacked discipline both on and off the field. I don't want to say the program became a joke, far from it, however they certainly are and should have been much better than what they've become relegated to.

Really, I think Koetter's goose was cooked after the Keller- Carpenter fiasco, and anything less than a 2 loss season I think put his ass in hot water.

Zach is going to turn pro, but there's almost no chance that Rudy would transfer...He's already burnt his redshirt, so he'd only have one year of eligibility if he transfered to a D1 school.

If he transferred he would have to sit out a year, but he doesn't lose any eligibility. Unless he transferred to another PAC-10 school, then he loses a year.
