DRC for Kolb alone is overpaying, but if Kolb turns out to be a solid QB (among the top 6-12 QBs in the NFL), then it's all right. You'll take an above-average QB over an elite cornerback.

DRC + a second round pick remains highway robbery. Again, look at the evidence of what a semi-proven QB is worth. At least Cassel illustrated that he could take a beating. Kolb parlayed an early-season head injury into $20 million guaranteed.

Amen, and Cassel isn't even a top 10 qb! The compensation we gave up and signed Kolb to is commensurate to a top 10 QB. Kolb sure as hell better be a superstar, or this trade is horrible.

Icing on the cake? Signing him to a massive extension before he's proven anything. We could have just had him play out the year, and if he's proves himself, franchise him and reward him with the contract. We may have compounded an already egregious error. :|

Here's hoping he's everything the FO thinks he is, because if he isn't, it'll be a rough couple years here.

Who cares if we trade a draft pick. The guy we wouild take with that pick would either suck , we'd cut him or he would be good and we would trade him or let him walk away.

That being said, if we win the division this year Kolb will have had to play a major role and we will all be saying DRC who?

Not sure if that would of been a better option .... the franchise tag would only get you one more year until you had to come to a full contract.

The numbers are a little off, but close enough for funk.....

What was kolb due for this season - something like $1.5M

The average of the top 5 QBs last year was $16.5M .... reported that could be closer to $20M this year .... would definitely be pretty close to that amount next year.

So if he pans out you are still in a little over $20M in guaranteed money and then still have to work out a long term deal - which will include yet more guaranteed money and probably a higher cost per year because he's proven

Under this move if he doesn't work out - the cards are still down that $20M - but the contract expense ends there .... a little trailing cap hip spread over the future

If you didn't extend and he played average you would have a heck of a choice at the end of the year ... definitely not good enough for top 5 money, but worth hanging onto but now you have to compete on the open market ..... again, the price would probably be higher as teams wouldn't have to give up anything other than money

if you are taking him might as well extend him

With $22 million in guaranteed money, if Kolb is a bust, it's a cap hit that will no doubt keep us in the dregs.

The franchise tag would be a worst case scenario. If he had a great season and earned a long term deal, it wouldn't be a factor. If he had a decent season, but not enough to earn that kind of deal, give him another year with the franchise tag, and if he just isn't the guy, cut bait.

so you want to pay a guy a $20M guaranteed contract for a single year after a decent season just so you can audition him for another year?

What if he has another decent season during the tag year?

Even if he just isn't the guy you have paid about the same amount of guaranteed money that you did by extending him

The minute franchising becomes an option the only way it doesn't make sense to extend using roughly the same amount of guaranteed money is with potential cap hits ....... even now if cut after 2 years a legacy $3-$4m cap hit isn't crippling by any means .... worth at least the gamble of him panning out

I guess if his current signing bonus is less than 20 million, and the qb franchise tag # is 16.5 as you assert, then it doesn't make a huge difference Guess we'll see when the #'s come out.

Jay Feely offered more fodder Thursday on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
On his Arizona Cardinals acquiring Kevin Kolb: "You can't underestimate how important it was in trying to re-sign Larry Fitzgerald after this year. He is the face of the franchise and one of, if not the best receiver in the NFL -- exactly the kind of guy you want to build around. Obviously, if they didn't have a quarterback of the future in place, the likelihood of trying to re-sign Larry Fitzgerald after this year would greatly diminish."

Im not of the camp that says DRC wasnt a good fit etc. I didnt want to lose hm either, but for gods sake if thats what it takes to get some consistent QB play (and hopefulyl better) around here and win some games then IM for it. I will always value a good QB more than a great CB. Always.

The fact is that judging if this is a mistake or not, to me, is more on what Kolb and the Cardinals do and less on what we gave up for him. Hey Whiz put all his eggs in the Kolb basket and if he had any misgivings on whether or not Kolb was the answer, thats on him.

So on the flip side of your 7-9 plays like Warner arguement, then if the defense keeps us in games, Kolb plays like Trent Dilfer, and the Cards go 10-6, the trade was a good one right?

That price is too high for simply "consistent" QB play. What does that mean? 2800 yards? A 4:3 TD/INT ratio? The Cards had the worst QB situation in the NFL last year. It shouldn't cost one of your four best players to improve from that. It should cost 3 years, $24 million and signing Matt Hasselbeck.

If all you want is consistent QB play, you can get that for nothing, or you can get it for a 2nd round pick. I don't see the promise of a Top 12 QB in Kevin Kolb, and I don't think the majority of people on the board here see that either--they're just afraid to admit it out loud.

If the Cards go 10-6 because the defense made a quantum leap despite losing one of its 3 best players, then yes, the Kolb trade will work out. But you don't expect that to happen, and neither do I.

So you wouldn't trade Matt Schaub (a good QB) for Darelle Revis (a great cornerback)? You wouldn't trade Nmamdi (a great cornerback) for Kyle Orton (a good QB)? Say it out loud if that's true, and mean it.

I don't think that DRC is an great QB, but I also don't think that Kevin Kolb is a good QB. The impression on the board seems to be, "Well, I don't really see it, but if Whis does and it gets Larry to extend, then I guess I'm on board."

That's not good enough for me.

Yes consistent QB play THIS year? Yes. I dont expect world beaters this year fro Kolb or this team, sorry. No OTA's, new DC, new QB...too many variables.

Considering our current QB situation (pre-Kolb) I wouldnt trade Schaub for Revis. It does nothing to help this team win now. (I wont say Orton b/c I dont know if i'd put him up there with Schaub)

But what baffles me is that you are basing whether or not the Kolb deal is good on how well the defense performs. I grade him on wins and losses and I will grade Whiz the same way. If Kolb in 2012 completes 60% of his passes, throws for 3000 yards, has a 4:3 TD to INt ratio id be OK with that, as long as the Cards win!

You really want Hasselback as a Cardinal? Really? The same guy who hasnt played a fulls eason since 2006? The same Hasselback who puts up 59% comp % 12td's and 17 ints?

I think we have a different view ont he importance of QB play

That's the bottom line. No one here wanted to lose DRC this yr. BUT the west is wide open this yr. Anyone can take it with the right mix of coaching, talent, preperation and execution. That mix was most lacking last yr. was on offense and at that one position you have to have in the nfl to succeed.

Plus mtl, we probobly keep the best player on the team long term LF11.

Defenses in the NFC West aren't the NFC East.
Not related to any one comment, just making an observation.

I have my complaints about DRC and a 2nd, but I'm all in now. I agree with the contract, It's a good contract for a starting QB, And we are desperate, starving, cottonmouthed thirsty for a QB.

We got the top young QB available to build around long term. It is better than a 50/50 chance. We need to run the damn ball and give him a chance at successes.

Some of the naysayers on this board will never be happy, never! One thing is certain in today's NFL......you cannot win without a good QB. That was made quite obvious last year. Getting that QB will never come cheaply. I applaud the Cardinal FO for pulling the trigger on this move. This trade has been in the works for a long time now. The Eagles had something that we desperately wanted & needed. The Eagles in turn, desperately wanted & needed a CB opposite Samuels. The Cardinals drafted Peterson, knowing that they were going to make this trade. The QB position is of greater value, hence the additional 2nd round pick. Regardless of what kind of player DRC may be, the Cardinals had to make this trade. I like the trade & I'm fine with the risk involved. If Kolb pans out, and I'm confident he will, it really doesn't matter what kind of career DRC has. We have OUR QB, so let's be happy & move on!!

Agreed.

There's no attitude problem in professional sports that can't be fixed with money, and winning.

Haynsworth, TO, etc say thank you. See Ouchie's post as well.

I can only say that if Kolb works out, leads this team to the playoffs, and wins more games then he losses it is a success. My point was if he plays like Warner and we make a SB run who in the hell cares what we gave up for him at that point? Are you still going to be bitching that "we paid to much for Kolb, wish we still had DRC and 5 wins" No you wont!

The Cards took a shot, we have no idea if they swung and missed or hit a GrandSlam. But they took a chance and I am glad they did.QUOTE]

No doubt. :doi:

Just a bump in the road $ wise.

I just finalized the keepers for my fantasy team. We can keep three, and my obvious ones were McFadden for an 8th and Mendenhall for a 4th. I had a bunch of QBs for later picks I was considering...it'll be Kolb for a 10th now ;)

I like the deal. Something tells me that Horton wouldn't like DRC much at all. I hate giving up the 2nd, but we got the QB this team has clearly wanted since before the lockout.

Co-sign.

I actually expect DRC to have a very good year with the Eagles. I'm sure he will end up in plenty of highlight reels making picks etc but they will conviently forget to show him doing his matador impersenation against the run.

Pretty much how I see it too.

C'mon KK, make me forget the 2nd rounder and it's all good

But will the Philly fans ignore his matador impersonation?
