Raiders DT Tommy Kelly ripped into Kevin Kolb after Friday's preseason debacle, calling the quarterback "skittish" and "scared."

"That boy's scared," Kelly told teammates on the sidelines. After the game, Kelly elaborated, "Anytime anybody gets close to him he starts looking at the refs. As a defensive lineman you love a quarterback like that. He ain't even trying to look at the routes no more." Kolb has indeed been skittish going back to early-season 2010 with the Eagles. Kelly's comments won't sit well in a Cardinals locker room that was already slanted in John Skelton's favor. Kolb is 5-of-15 for a paltry 47 yards through three exhibition games; we suspect Skelton will be named the starter as early as this week.

Yeah I posted Kelly's first comment during the game thread. There's no way Kolb is going to start now.
He hasn't been the same since the concussions.

He looks like he does not even want to play. It also looks like his teammates do not want to play for him either.

Heard ESPN's Chis Mortensen this morning on a talk show. Said that Kolb looked like a deer in the headlights but was also very negative on the Cards offensive line.

bye bye kolb. Horrid performance. One good drive and then 100% TERRIBLE the next 3 posessions. You are done.

Glenn Parker on the radio also alluded - as it was happening - to Kolb's preoccupation with the rush and not looking downfield.

Kolb Responds

http://blog.azcardinals.com/2012/08/18/kolb-responds-to-kellys-comments/

“Scared? Scared of what?” Kolb said. “Taking a hit? I have never been afraid of anyone on the field and that will never change. That includes Number 93 (Kelly). There’s a fine line between holding in the pocket and trying to escape to make a play. Tommy Kelly is too clueless to know the difference. I don’t mind people criticizing my play. Don’t ever question my toughness.”

Cards O line was instantly improved as soon as Kolb left. Oh, wait. Maybe they weren't the problem in the first place.

Wah Kolb...you're clearly scared out there. EVERYONE can see it. Skittish, bad decisions, can't wait to release the ball and not reading defenses.

I think it's kind of sad that he lost his job on the night his face was on the ticket and the cups.

This isn't intended to let Kolb off the hook, but it sounded from the radio call that the play-call on a passing down deep in Cardinal territory was some sort of double reverse-pivot kind of deal when a much simpler three-step and let 'er go pass play made more sense. That complicated handoff seemed to me at the time to be a recipe for disaster (& indeed it was).

Anyone care to comment.

Like I said last night, he needs to do a Timm Rosenbach and just retire. That was a scary concussion he got last year. I appreciate the fact that he came back and tried hard. But, someone who cares about him needs to sit him down and give him a reality talk. That concussion has destroyed his confidence and nerve. If he continues playing, it will end very badly for his health at some points.

Get out while your brain isn't completely scrambled Kolb.

This is what I saw too. From my background, warriors follow a LEADER. I wish the best for Kolb, and do think he's more talented than Skelton. But, I'll take Skelton first.

That is what Kolb did in the drop back, but I cannot possibly imagine the play design called for him to do an 8 step drop and freaking 360 on the goal line. That was all him.

I'm sorry, but is this new news? We have been saying skittish and scared to describe Kolb for a year now

Really brave of Kolb to respond through Urban when his actual play failed to do the talking. When the Raiders were working on their own defensive stuff, Kolb goes 3-3. When the Raiders start putting a little bit of pressure on? Punt, punt, safety.

There's yet to be a challenge Kolb has successfully risen to. No wonder he'll forever be grateful to Andy Reid.

I agree with Kolb. Don't question a guy's toughness. Talk about his play, but I think calling someone scared in childish.

Just to be clear, if this were college, where the offensive line doesn't bear the full responsibility for lost yardage in sacks, Kolb would have 20 total yards passing this preseason. He's been sacked on more than 20% of his dropbacks. Net sacks, Kolb is averaging less than 2 yards per attempt.

I can't wait for Krang to wander over and explain to us how Kolb still gives us a better chance to win because Skelton sucks so much.

Agree. Football like hockey weeds out the 'girly men' way before they reach the NFL or NHL. Question his decision making not his willingness to pay the price to make a play.

Kolb has not won the starting job, but he will make a fine back up, again. BUT HE IS CARDINAL- Since Levi is gone who is going to step and defend Kolb from Kelly on this team?

Skelton may have to meet Kelly in the parking lot? get this worked out? this oline is weak without Levi, Bridges will need to step in as the enforcer... Levi was quiet - but when he spoke others walked around him.

Well scared can be applied in different ways.

It's obvious that by being under center he is not scared to be there.

Once the ball is hiked, it's a whole other ballgame.

So really both are right, but are talking about different things. Kolb isn't scared to be there. Kelly is right to call Kolb scared during the plays.

Kolb keeps taking the punishment, and while he might leave a game, or gets concussions that make him have to sit for a long time. He wants to get back out there at some point. So he isn't scared in that sense. He's not a kid afraid of a bully.

But again while the play is happening, he plays scared. Anything goes wrong, and he bails. Runs into sacks. Runs into bad passes. Takes safeties. Takes his low eye level and looks even lower.

What Kelly said was pretty concise. If he's looking at the defenders and/or refs, he cannot be throwing to receivers.

We've even seen times where he just senses pressure from the backside that doesn't exist and suddenly he bails. Skittish is probably a better word for it. Uncertain.

NFL network and Kurt Warner amongst others just did a section on it and Kelly's comments.

The dreaded 'eye in the sky never lies' was brought out by the guy sitting next to Warner.

Warner said amongst the things we've been saying or others have been that it looks like Kolb doesn't know what he should be doing, or where to throw it. Uncertain. That CKW is looking for a reason to start someone but Kolb isn't giving him a reason to. Skelton is and seems to have the locker room somewhat.

They did a couple minutes on it. Here's some pics on NFL.com of Kolb under duress. One eyes open but looking for what probably is a rb. The other two he's getting hit and closing his eyes.
