Well scared can be applied in different ways.
It's obvious that by being under center he is not scared to be there.
Once the ball is hiked, it's a whole other ballgame.
So really both are right, but are talking about different things. Kolb isn't scared to be there. Kelly is right to call Kolb scared during the plays.
Kolb keeps taking the punishment, and while he might leave a game, or gets concussions that make him have to sit for a long time. He wants to get back out there at some point. So he isn't scared in that sense. He's not a kid afraid of a bully.
But again while the play is happening, he plays scared. Anything goes wrong, and he bails. Runs into sacks. Runs into bad passes. Takes safeties. Takes his low eye level and looks even lower.
What Kelly said was pretty concise. If he's looking at the defenders and/or refs, he cannot be throwing to receivers.
We've even seen times where he just senses pressure from the backside that doesn't exist and suddenly he bails. Skittish is probably a better word for it. Uncertain.
NFL network and Kurt Warner amongst others just did a section on it and Kelly's comments.
The dreaded 'eye in the sky never lies' was brought out by the guy sitting next to Warner.
Warner said amongst the things we've been saying or others have been that it looks like Kolb doesn't know what he should be doing, or where to throw it. Uncertain. That CKW is looking for a reason to start someone but Kolb isn't giving him a reason to. Skelton is and seems to have the locker room somewhat.
They did a couple minutes on it. Here's some pics on NFL.com of Kolb under duress. One eyes open but looking for what probably is a rb. The other two he's getting hit and closing his eyes.
