Kolb - Why he may not be cut

Why would the CBA care? I believe the rules are that you cannot have an annual salary DECREASE from year to year.

Could the contract have been structured differently. Probably. Are you sure that a roster bonus as you suggest counts in the current year, or does that get pro-rated as well? Bottom line. We took a chance on the QB. You gotta do that - it's the QB. Yup, we might end up with a one-year cap hit. It's one year. Big deal.

But while taking that chance, Graves included a 5-day window after free agency. It was widely reported that this deal was a $20M guaranteed - but really it was not. The 5-day window was a good move for the team - it gave a subtle out. I'm not sure why you can't give credit to Graves for that.

No. It's part of his 2012 CAP hit of $10M. (1 salary - 2 pro-rated bonus - 7 roster bonus = 10)

I can think of $7M reasons why if they felt they had the position covered. Forget about the cap and keep in mind that $7M goes right back to the bottom line. Not sure they would care about $8M in cap impact. It would be as if they didn't have to spend to the limit as dictated by the new cba. Just like the old days.

I was thinking the exact same thing. His bonus being accelerated doesn't cost the Bidwill's a dime and in fact automatically brings them a little closer to the cap spending requirement without actually to spend the full amount. If anything that sounds more like the Cardinals MO than keeping Kolb.

Central part of the problem is that - due in combination to the Lockout and the Concussion - a year has gone by and we really don't know what we've got in Kevin Kolb.

Can he (will he?) improve to a Brees/Palmer/Mannings/Brady level? Or will he have his up-times and down-times with an injury or two in between?

We really don't know, because we haven't seen enough.

Meanwhile along comes Peyton Manning (who may or may not want to come here) with a ridiculous upside and proven track record coupled with a high price-tag and enormous health risks).

What do we do? Buy time, I guess. But however we play it, I get the feeling that the Cardinals - whether they like it or not - are being sucked into an extremely high-stakes poker game.

A smart organization would keep Kolb given the difference in cap implications, especially given the health questions and age of Manning. Even if we do sign him, he's good for 3 more years maybe, then we'd have the big part of Kolbs contract behind us. Kolb would have 3 years of learning from Manning, and getting some mopup time to apply what he's learned and take over when Manning retires.

I have no idea what the Cardinals are planning on doing with reguards to Manning or Kolb.

Kolb is going to be 28 next season. The hope of him learning behind someone else evaporated a while ago. "Developing" someone on the bench, paying them 10 mil a year to age 31 is... rather insane.

You may be right!! But you also maybe blinded by your hatred of Kolb. I'm willing to give the staff the benefit of the doubt and trust that they saw something in Kolb they could develop, and hope that watching, playing with and learning from probably the most cerebral QB ever to play the game will help him. If they cut him they will be admitting they have no idea what they are looking for in a QB, and we wasted a 2nd, a starting CB, 12 mil dollars, and a year of developing Skelton. Considering Manning's shaky health, i'd feel much better with Kolb AND Skelton on the roster, then next year if Manning stays healthy all year, and Skelton beats out Kolb for number 2, i'd be much more willing to cut him.

I like our coaching staff, but I am not wild about Whiz as a talent evaluator, especially of QBs. Last year their plans centered on Derek Anderson and Max Hall, so I dont think they know very muchabout looking for a QB.

However, Kolb's concussions give them a ready made excuse that allows them to save face on their obvious misevaluation of talent.
