In an article today on AZCentralAZRepublic, Kevin Towers was quoted as hinting that both Jason Kubel and Chris Young could be gone next season, with Parra back in LF and Eaton in CF.

Especially if they can add power at 3B or SS.

Jason Kubel and Gerardo Parra hardly could be any more different as players, but the Diamondbacks might only have room for one of them in their outfield next season.

The Diamondbacks seem intent on trading center fielder Chris Young, thus opening up a spot for rookie Adam Eaton. They also seem likely to keep right fielder Justin Upton and are apparently willing to slot rookie A.J. Pollock into a fourth outfielder’s role.

As such, it appears unlikely that both Kubel and Parra will return. And if you’re trying to read the tea leaves, it looks like Kubel might be the odd man out.

Diamondbacks General Manager Kevin Towers spoke this week about wanting to cut down on strikeouts and improve his defense. Manager Kirk Gibson said last week he wanted to be a more athletic team.

That could point toward Parra getting a bigger role. Parra isn’t nearly the offensive contributor as Kubel is, but he can run, makes decent contact and is regarded as one of the better defensive outfielders in baseball.

That said, Towers is looking to add a shortstop and a third baseman, and he said what he does with those positions could factor into the left-field decision.

I think trading Upton will get ARZ that SS & 3B they need and Kubel's numbers project better as a RF. His only flaws are his age (31) and his stikeouts (151).

I agree with you, but Kevin Towers has made it pretty clear that Upton will be in RF next year.

If so, it will be his last chance to show what he can do without the pressure of being advertised as the face of the organization.

I say if he throws one more ball over the head of the cutoff man to show how strong his arm is -- or if he misses a fly ball sliding for it nowhere near the stands -- or if he demolishes a dugout because of his lack of discipline while at bat, put an ad on the outfield wall, "Available. Arizona's underachieving Upton."

Someone should plant one of those realty signs in the middle of "Uptown."

Player A hitting .231 with a .745 OPS vs Player B hitting .273 with a .727 OPS, Fans say Player A sucks and Player B rocks.

Player C hitting .253 with a .833 OPS vs Player D hitting .280 with a .785 OPS, Fans say Player D sucks and Player C rocks.

I really think you're overrating Upton's current market value. Upton would probably get the D-Backs ONE of those positions, but not both. If Texas were willing to give up Andrus and Olt, it would've happened already. That's a no-brainer for the D-Backs and a 'WTH?!' for the Rangers. The Rangers are craving pitching. If they trade valuable assets, it will be for that.

Beyond that, I don't know where else you're going to find a trading partner that provides both unless you look at the Cubs and make a run at Baez or something. After the Rangers, all the other deals look pointless.

This could very well bite us in the butt but if it is pitching they are after, I say you toss them Bauer for Profar. BAM
