Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter will reportedly not work out at Friday’s pro day, per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. Carter is viewed as a possible New England Patriots draft target, and one has to wonder if the injury could force him down the draft board.
On Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicated that he believed it would be unlikely for Carter to drop to the Patriots at fourth overall. Carter was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right foot during the NFL combine. The injury stems from the Nittany Lions' game against Boise State during the College Football Playoffs.
As Jones pointed out, Carter remains a top-three projected draft pick even with the foot injury.
The Patriots currently have the No. 4 pick on the board, which should keep them out of range for Carter. But crazier things have happened.
If Carter is available, the Patriots might be willing to skip out on a left tackle with their first pick and take the best available player. Carter is believed by some to be the No. 1 player on the entire draft board.
He enjoyed meeting Mike Vrabel during the NFL combine, and the pairing could put the much-improved Patriots defense over the top on paper.
