After not working out at the NFL combine, NFL teams will just have to go with their gut when it comes to evaluating Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter. While previously thought to be expected to participate in Penn State's pro day, that will no longer be the case.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Carter will not be working out during Penn State's pro day event on Friday in State College. That update comes from Carter's agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

“He is still finishing up rehab on the shoulder injury he had from the Boise State game,” Rosenhaus said according to Schefter. “He may still do a workout for teams sometime in mid April.”

Carter is still recovering from an injury suffered during Penn State's College Football Playoff run at the end of last season. That prevented him from participating in the workouts during the recent NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis last month. At the time, Rosenhause suggested Carter was planning on being a full participant in Penn State's pro day event, which has typically drawn plenty of attention in recent years.

Carter led the nation with 24 tackles for a loss last season. He also changed positions from linebacker to edge rusher. He was named the Big Ten's defensive player of the year after a brilliant season leading Penn State's defense.

Carter not working out in the pro day is a bit of a bummer because it would have been fun to compare his results with those who performed well at the combine. Even without working out at the combine or pro day, Carter is still widely expected to be one of the top picks in the upcoming NFL draft. A number of notable mock drafts released lately have Carter slotted at no. 2 overall to the Cleveland Browns.
