No one should ever take what he says seriously, IMHO.

Did he suddenly lose all of the respect he had for Michael Jordan and his number?

I'm not even a fan, nor can I imagine myself ever rooting for Mr. Ego II, but come on. He tried to start a league wide thing and have the league retire the number in honor of Jordan. After 4 years it went nowhere, so why not? Also, people are allowed to change their minds or are you going to claim you never change your mind or position on anything? You would be the first and only human being to do so, so I'm going to have to conclude you're just being unfairly harsh and judgmental of the fella.

I was listening to PTI the other day and Wilbon said he liked the going back to #23, because that meant people who (didn't burn) still had their Lebron Cavs jerseys wouldn't have to buy new ones. Not that anyone "has" to buy any jersey. But at least it doesn't look like an additional money grab. Just speculation, but I thought it was an interesting point.

My son still has a #23 LeBron Cleveland jersey hanging in his closet. Funny. Its relevant again.

He is still not allowed to wear it (for reasons of public decency, not financial).
