The Gray's Creek softball team is on a roll this season and is on the rise in the United 8 Conference and the NCHSAA 4A East.
Boasting a 12-game win streak, the Bears are 16-1 overall on the season and 11-0 in the conference after a commanding 7-2 win over Lumberton on Tuesday night.
This year's success presents a significant opportunity for the Bears, who are vying for their first regular-season conference title since the shortened 2021 season, when they finished with a 12-3 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the Patriot Conference.

Coach Stuart Gilmer attributes the team's success to staying true to the process, along with a mix of experienced leadership and a solid commitment to the coaching staff's techniques. "They've really bought into the process," Gilmore stated. "They stay true to what we're teaching them during practice, but this year, the game experience coupled with strong leadership is making the difference."
Gilmer emphasizes a simple yet straightforward approach to maintaining the winning streak: staying mentally prepared and focused on the present moment. "I tell them all the time, you've got to stay in the moment. We don't want to look too far ahead to the next game or (in the playoffs) the next round. Instead, we concentrate on the next pitch and the next play," he said.
But one of the more pivotal achievements for the Bears this season has been the vocal leadership from four seniors. UNC Pembroke commit Amariya Green, Fayetteville State commit Saniyah Leach, Limestone commit Hannah Welsh, and Imani Pierce have all risen to the occasion, ensuring that their teammates remain accountable both in practice and during games.
"My seniors have really taken charge of the leadership role," Gilmer said. "They're more vocal, which is natural for the position they're in, and they help keep everyone accountable from game to game and practice to practice."
The impact of the seniors' leadership is palpable, especially for underclassmen like junior Amber Miller, a Lander University commit who is currently second on the team with a batting average of .538 and leads with 23 runs, and sophomore slugger August Kebort has made a significant contribution, hitting four home runs to tie the team-high with Green and ranking third on the team with 22 runs.
As the Bears continue their pursuit of a conference title, they look to face conference foe, South View (12-3, 9-1 U8) on Thursday with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
