Apr. 15—GRAND FORKS — The Concordia men's tennis team already has more conference wins than it did in the last six years combined. It is on its longest winning streak, six matches, in more than 15 years.
Grand Forks Central graduate and two-time North Dakota state singles champion Logan Sandberg is helping lead the charge.
Sandberg is undefeated in singles for the last month-plus, winning six straight.
He won in straight sets against Adrian, St. Mary's, Wisconsin-Superior and St. Scholastica. He also rallied for a three-set win over Cooper Anderson of St. John's and Cooper Johnson of Hamline.
"He's always had the talent to be successful in this conference," said Concordia first-year coach David Youngs. "What the turning point has been recently is that he's been able to let go of results. He's able to focus on things that are controllable, knowing if he does those things, he's going to put himself in the best position to have a positive result."
Sandberg's victory over St. John's clinched the meet for Concordia. It marked the Cobbers' first win over St. John's since 2017.
"He's been a game-changer for us," Youngs said.
Two high school wrestling coaches with Greenbush ties are to be inducted in the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Among this year's inductees are Todd Bergeron and Efrem Novacek.
Bergeron, a 1987 Oklee High School graduate, was a four-time state wrestling entrant. He was a state champion in 1986 at 98 pounds and 1987 at 105 pounds. He was undefeated in both his junior and senior seasons.
Bergeron went to UND, then Mayville State, where he was a two-time NAIA national qualifier. He had a 86-39 college record and was team captain for two years.
Bergeron coached Badger-Greenbush-Middle River from 2003-2019. His teams were 240-78 with 87 state entrants, 34 medalists and six state champions.
Novacek, a 1985 Greenbush graduate, was a section champion at 138 pounds as a senior captain.
After wrestling at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, Novacek was an assistant coach for 36 years.
He coached his son Isaac to five state tournaments and a state championship and his other son Owen to four state tournaments including a third-place finish.
Isaac is B-G-MR's current head coach.
UND senior sprinter Jory Vasek, of Fisher, Minn., broke the Fighting Hawks' program record in the 400 meters last week in Fargo.
Vasek clocked a time of 47.7 seconds, breaking the record of Jesse Fenstermacher, who came in at 47.82 seconds in Fargo in 2012.
Vasek's time currently leads the Summit League.
A little more than an hour after breaking the school record, Vasek was runner-up in the 200 meters with a time of 21.52 seconds, which ranks No. 4 in UND history.
Three former UND women's basketball players have announced their next destination. Fatima Ibrahim, the Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, will transfer to Dayton, while Rakiyah Beal and Kiyah Hurst will transfer to Omaha.
Former UND men's basketball player Dariyus Woodson has committed to Louisiana.
Former Grand Forks athletic director Mark Rerick, now a professor at UND, has been inducted into the North Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame. The ceremony was April 6 in Fargo.
Four Winds-Minnewaukan's Ava Gourd has signed to play college basketball at Dakota State College of Bottienau.
The University of Mary has named Darren Tighe as the program's 10th head men's basketball coach. Tighe is 169-112 in 10 seasons as a college head coach with stops at Dakota State, Mayville State and Ridgewater Junior college. He led Mayville State to three national tournament appearances.
UND's Callie Honig is the Summit League Player of the Week for softball. The senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., had six hits in nine at bats in taking two of three games from North Dakota State last weekend.
