Looking Ahead to the Steelers

Here’s my opinion of the Steelers. This started out as a short post, but I got on a roll. I haven’t looked up any stats or anything, so it’s all opinion.

Steelers Offense
Most of Pittsburgh’s strengths fall in to the “potential” category. They really haven’t shown anything this year on offense (or defense to a lesser extent), but it is essentially the same team as last year that had a number of things going for them.

The Steelers have a trio of excellent WRs—possibly the best trio in the league. Hines Ward, Palxico Burress and Antwain Randel El are always dangerous.

Bettis is getting the nod as starter and still has some power and a few nifty moves for a big man left in him. Zeroue is a fast change of pace RB that was starting for the first part of the season. He can be dangerous, but doesn’t seem well-suited for an every-down back.

“Wow,” you say. “Great receivers. Good running backs. Why aren’t the Steelers the Rams 2000 incarnate?”

Their offensive line. It stinks this year. Maddox can still be effective, IMO, if this line would give him time. Thus far, it hasn’t. He’s been mauled. Bettis and Zeroue are very dangerous runners…if they have a sliver of daylight to run to. They haven’t. Very often they’ve been caught in the backfield and had to make something of nothing.

The Cardinals have a great opportunity to pressure Maddox and take pressure off of the defensive secondary. They did just this in against a very similar offense on Monday. In fact, the Bengals offense looks to me to be a “clicking” version of the Steelers’ O—very fast and sure-handed WR corps with a bruising run game. The Cardinals shut down the run and put pressure on the QB. Even when they didn’t put pressure on the passer, they managed to contain the receivers for the most part.

To be successful, the Cardinals will need to play the very same brand of defense they did against the Bengals. Pressure the QB and keep everything in front of them. Contain. No big plays.

Steelers Defense
Again, you look at the Steeler’s D and think—man, they’re scary-good. Then you look closer and see that verybody is hanging a bunch of points on them. They have the potential to be “scary-good,” but they’re just not clicking.

Pittsburgh does run a VERY effective 3-4. Casey Hampton anchors that D-line extremely effectively and their LBs are strong, fast, athletic and aggressive. They are very good at getting to the QB through this formation by unleashing the LBs. Plus, they’re pretty good at stopping the run.

“Okay, I give,” you say. “Why does it seem like teams are always hanging 30 points on Pittsburgh?”

Turnovers. The offense give up the ball a lot, and the defense, for whatever reason, can’t seem to get their hands on the ball.

The Cardinals need to continue to pound the ball with Shipp, but I think they need to mix in more passing. Hopefully, we’ll have a healthy Bryant Johnson to compliment Boldin. We need to take advantage of the aggressive LB pass rush and use screens to Shipp and Anderson and reverses. We need to make them respect the run to open up the intermediate pass. We need to take our shots down field because I think their secondary is their weakness.

The Million-Dollar Question
Can they do it? Can the Cardinals beat the Steelers and make it 3 in a row? I don’t know. Every week I think, “this is the week the Steelers come out of their funk.” Every week they let me down (when they lost to the Browns I was knocked out of a $25,000 suicide pool).

Plus, lately I’ve been picking against the Cards and they’ve been winning. I think I’ll probably continue that mojo this week.

If we run our same game plan as the last two weeks, the Steelers will kill us. They stuff run Games.

Teams that give them trouble throw the ball down field into the middle areas where the LBs aren't.

Exactly. But, we do need to continue to run the ball so they still bring their 'backers. The only way to "get'em where they ain't" is to get 'em out of the middle of the field. They need to get sucked into the play with the run, opening up the intermediate pass.

I looked at a few of their stats.... Defense is ranked somewhere around fifth in the league... you are right turnovers are killing them.....

I think Skorp is right, the game play will have to change this week. Or, we won't fair very well against their defense.
Blake will need all his recievers this week.

IMO Quan should be in the slot most of the game. He should have 10 catches and about 7 should be slants. BJ will most likely go over the middle a lot also. If blake dosent hang them out to dry we could win. This would be a good week for blake to bring out that long ball we have all heard about.

I'll take my chances with Hodgins on any of their LB's. It's up to the line to get off the DT's and get to their LB's after the double-team as well though.
You can't fill one hole with four linebackers. We still have a good chance to run on them.

When we're not running through the tackles I'd use misdirection and crack back on Gildon and Porter with our receivers. I think not only Shipp but Anderson could have a good day.

Shipp can be just as effective in the passing game, almost like an extended handoff. We need to send pressure because their WR will eat us up if given time. We still need to run, but these guys have a horrible pass defense. We have a chance to control the LOS on both sides of the ball, and if we do, we'll be alright (Not as if that's going out on a limb!!)

Look you have to realize that it's virtually impossible to throw over the middle a lot and NOT hang receivers out to dry. I pointed out weeks ago that we were throwing over the middle at an alarmingly high rate(compared to most other teams) and that's why we had all the TO's and probably caused some injuries.

There's a distinct reason why every WR that comes into the NFL has to show if he'll "go over the middle" or not, very few like to because they get hit.

Yes there are QB's who are better at it in terms of timing and placement but the fact is if you run the offense we ran the first 6 games, with WR's like ours, you are going to get a lot of guys hit by the very nature of the system.

Pittsburgh has talent, and a good run defense, we're going to have to throw the ball to beat them unless they turn it over a lot.

Pittsburgh Rankings
Defense
Scoring: 27th (25.2/game)
Pass: 7th (183/game)
Rush: 5th (91.5/game)

Offense
Scoring: 20th (18.5/game)...AZ dead last in scoring at 14.4/game
Pass: 9th (220.1/game)
Rush: 29th (87.4/game)

Turnovers: 29th (-6)...AZ is dead last in TOs at -13

Turnovers jump out at me, as does scoring. Unfortunately, those are the two catagories we rank last in, so it's little comfort that the Steelers aren't any good in them. Also, I'm surpised their running game is as poor as it is. I still think if their line can put together anything resembling a block it could be dangerous. Fortunately, that seems to be a strength of the AZ defense.

The whiner run defense was highly ranked going into the Cardinals game but we ran over them like a mac truck.

Still, this game scares me more than San Fran or Cincy. The Steelers are backed into a corner, and they'll come out fighting on their home field.

There is no way that I go away from our strategy of the last two weeks. If we get up by 14, and start leaning on them with our offensive line, they might quit.

I like what we have done the last two weeks. I would add about six more long throws down field. Sooner or later Jeff Blake has got to connect. I think this game will depend on turnovers.

Well, I think every game will depend on turnovers!:D

Seriously...if the Cards run right at this Steeler defense all day long you will see a lot of three-and-outs

Yep, in this game we are going to have to use the pass to losen up the run. If we allow them to contain our passing game with just thier base defense, we are dead.

Additionally, we absolutely MUST be in Tommys face ALL day to force the turnover we'll need to win. The problem I forsee though, is that Mac is becoming overly impressed with his front four, and will once again shy away from throwing the kitchen sink at the QB, which will result in Ward and Burress lighting us up for big numbers.

This game will require significant adjustments to win, and we all know how quick this coaching staff is make those adjustments.

I predict a big letdown, and another blowout. :(

Based on what? The whiners run D was supposed to kill us. No where to run against the bungles D. And here we are at crossroads #3. Same story. If our line performs again Shipp goes for 125 plus. Ball control will again be our M.O. Why is the Steeler D more worriesome than the last two weeks? This train is on a roll. I think it keeps rollin'!

Bengals D gives up 4.2+ YPC and 125 yards a game. Thats awful! Nuff said!

San Fran gives up 4+ ypc per game and their stats are skewed b/c no team tried to run against them b/c they had such great sucess in the air (34 attempts per game/ 201 ypg/ 61% completion percentage/ 1803 total passing yards given up/ and 13td passes against them)

Steelers give up 3.4 ypc and 91 yards per game....

Hardly the same thing!

The steelers can and will stop the run. I am not saying to start playing the run-and-shoot over here, but if you think the Cards will line up against the Steelers and hand the ball off 35 times to Shipp and win, well it aint gonna happen...stats dont lie!

I think they need to incorporate a game plan that showcases the pass more. Specifically since the Steelers wll be blitzing ad nauseum!
