One of my favorite movies of all time, with one of the best endings of all time. Great music too.

the more I see this movie, the more I fall head ove heels in love with it. I knowin an earlier post I said it wasn't a classic - well, it wasn't aKNOCK-YOU out classic, but upon repeated viewings, I've changed my mind - he movie growson me exponentially each time I see it. A beautiful, bittersweet understated love story... that's a tough combo to pull off and it's done here to perfection.

Has anyone ever found out what's said at the end?

no and no one ever will. That's the best part of the ending - it's left to your own interpretation.

I know...but it's so moving, you just WANT to know what was said...

Did he leave for good, or was he coming back someday? Did he just give her some kind words that helped her smile and know she was going to be okay?

I just love this movie.

I remember audio people on the web trying to cut out all the noise and get the words.

I like to think he gave her some words of wisdom and love and encouragement knowing they'd never see each other again. It fit with his personality of sadness and melancholy. And I think we've all met people that we really connected with that we knew we'd never see again...parting with them is difficult but you want to let them know that twenty years from that moment, you'll still think of them from time to time.

Great, great movie.

Yeah...that sounds right to me.

It just hits you, like if you've been in that situation, where you met someone amazing, know nothing can happen, and then see them leave, more than likely never to see them again.

It's sad and cool at the same time...

This movie has been on TV a few times lately and I have turned the sound up to try to hear what he says to no avail. Since both characters were involved in seemingly loveless relationships I thought he may have whispered plans to meet up with her again.

I thought this movie dragged but the parts of the movie showing Tokyo nightlife were great.

This is how I feel about it. It's defnitely moved into my top ten all time. Part of the reason I like it so much is that I'm so tired of endless sequels and remakes. Really, this film was, and is, a breath of fresh air into a pretty stale scene.
