I like Veldheers mentality “New goal,” Veldheer said. “Be one of the best on the right side.”

Thats actually really smart, from a career perspective. You can either be a top 15 LT, or a top 3 RT. You can prolong your career and make more money (in the long run) at RT.

Its sort of like a CB transitioning into a S when he gets older.

I disagree. No need to rush to lock into a long term overpaid mediocre LT if he is in fact mediocre. On the flip side, If DJ proves to be a top level LT, then pay him his deserved top level pay.

you have to remember that with Fitz and CP gone next year, money wont be an issue. In fact, we will have so much $$$ to burn, that we have to be careful about overpaying guys who dont deserve it.
that is assuming we draft a QB or find one cheap...some of the available options could cost us $25mil a year...
my point on locking up DJ early was that maybe we can lock him in around $9mil per year rather than $15m when his contract expires

We arent signing a FA QB for $20+M. Those QBs dont become FAs. The only one is Cousins. And it wont be us. So it will be a draft pick. And say its a top 10 pick, what do they make? $10M? I have no idea. Whatever it is, its not $20M. So its still cheap by comparison.

I would rather pay 15M if DJ proves to be elite. Rather than hedge my bets and pay him 9M early, only for him to be mediocre.

Theres 2 elite LTs in next years draft. If DJ flops this year, we can either take one of those LTs or take one of the QBs. Either way, win win.

DJ was drafted to be our LTOTF and having Veldheer was luxury, so now it's time to take the training wheels off and see if DJ has got it. I think it is the right time and the right move.

All the discussion here is good. I think that the Cards are semi-trying to salvage D.J. Humphries, who was bad at RT. He was fine in a very limited sample size at LT. Veldheer is a pro who should be able to make the transition to the other side. If it doesn't work, then you've learned something about both players.

100% this. DJ is so bad at RT he shouldn't even be backing up the position; if he stinks also at LT, we will cut bait. If he can deliver on the left, expanding on that tiny sample size, maybe we have something there. Veldheer can always come back to the left side. Granted, if the experiment fails, we're completely boned at RT, but it's a risk we're taking.

Who says Palmer & Fitz are leaving after this year? Palmer is signed through 2018 & I don't think either has lost the passion yet.

Again, both guys spent a month contemplating retirement. The writing is essentially on the wall - and honestly, with another year of wear and tear on them, I don't think we want them to push it one more year.

It really is going to depend on the type of season we have. A year like last year? Yeah they probably retire. A great season? They could definitely come back.

Fitz is about 200 catches behind Tony Gonzales for #2 all time behind Jerry Rice. You think he isn't aware of that? You think being up there with Jerry Rice has no appeal to him? I believe it does.

Brett Favre "contemplated" retirement for the last 7 years he played....then had to be dragged out of the clubhouse in the end.

I put up a thread about this but 200 catches away from #2 doesn't seem like a valuable milestone to me. That's two more seasons at least, but realistically, three. He would have to essentially lead the league in receptions over the next two years to get there, and honestly, is being #2 that much different than being #3?

If he were 200 away from Rice I'd be more inclined to agree.

Arizona switching OT's Veldheer gave up 7 sacks in last 40 gms @LT while DJ Humphries gave up 7 last yr @RT surprised if switch lasts

This is the kind of nonsense you get from national writers, who know nothing of local teams in any market.

This is the right thing to do, and its not close.

Palmer and Fitz will return until physically unable to do so. Injuries will matter more than calendars.

Yeah, this Kirwan moron was only a scout for the Cardinals, at one time...and the Jets...and a defensive assistant coach...oh, and a front office exec...what in the world does he know?

Great news for DJH, no ACL tear. Dislocated kneecap and MCL repair. Out 3 months.

Hope they give Branch the kind of "we got you" deal Jaron Brown got last year. He deserves it.

Ifeanyi Momah is one tough dude to keep coming back from a multitude of injuries, dating back to his college days at BC.

Flipping Veldheer and Wentzel is fine. Veldheer has proven he can play both spots and if he is too expensive for next year, Wetzel, with good play down the stretch could be the starter at RT next year. Wetzel is one of the better run blocker and blockers in space (did you see the block he made on Gresham's TE screen TD?).

Yes, Hope he is ready for 2018, he did show improvement and I think he could be a great LT.

No, Branch is too old, and we see how this kind of deals aren't benificial to the team, I hope Baker shows what he can do and we have another spot that we don't need to think about for the next years.

Momah is a tough guy, hope he does well.

I hope Veldeheer does really well and we can trade him next year, there are enough teams that need a LT, and they will give up much for Veldeheer if he play 2015 style Veldeheer with his low contract (for a LT).

dude can't stay healthy... three seasons in a row missed substantial time due to injuries. Depending on him moving forward is folly, IMO.

1st year he was just inactive, last year they kept him out the last few games to be safe (concussion) and he’s been rolled up on twice this year which is just bad luck. He’s a building block moving forward.

Oft injured in college, too. It’s a pattern with him.

This is the third time Branch will go on IR in two seasons! Maybe they’ll give him another one-year deal, but you can’t depend on him.

Often injured in college as well. If he's a building block, prepare for your house to collapse... especially at the most important spot on the line.

Depending on him is the definition of insanity.
