He has also stated he wants to stay in LA, so the rest of the paragraph is conjecture with no basis.

You'd think ESPN would put some quality behind their rumor fabrication, but they are no better than local sports reporters.

I'm just not that sold on Maggette. He is NOT a very good defensive player and he is not that good of a shooter, especially from the 3. We need a wing who can play D and shoot, otherwise the middle becomes more crowded for Amare.

He is an athletic slasher whose game is similar to Grant Hill's (he's younger and more athletic of course).

Barb's outside shooting and court speed are weapons that are more useful to us, and his defense is not inferior to Maggette's.

I don't mind trading Barbs, but lets do it for something we need.

I suggested Jones in another thread. As far as I can tell, he opted out in Portland because he could count their number of SF's and decided it wasn't worth the bother.

Why MIGHT he come to the Suns even for not much money?

1. He is mostly a role player and may not attract a lot of money in free agency. A year ago the Suns had to pay to unload him at under $3 million.

2. He knows the team and the system. It may be al lot more comfortable for him (I don't know that, it's just a possibilty).

3. There is some long range opportunity since Hill is 36. Also, he's played some as a small ball PF.

4. In two years the Suns will have lots of cap space, so locking into the Suns with a two year deal would give him added value because they'd have Bird rights in additon to thei cap space.

James Jones is the TYPE of player we need. If we can get him cheap, I am all for it.

It would also be useful to have him for the fans on message boards to pick on, and take some of the pressure off of Barbs, Diaw, and the rooks.

No, it doesn't. They will have no room to sign him which also means they have no room to absorb what salaries come back. The idea of using the exception w/ a draft pick doesn't work either since we can't give away next years per the rules.

Though the Clips have done a good job, they will get nothing in return for Maggette.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't. It has been a long time since I had to think about the CBA, but if I remember correctly the Clippers had to renounce their Larry Bird rights on Maggette in order to get far enough under the cap to sign Davis.

Since the rights are renounced, they no longer can go above the cap to resign him.

There won't be a sign and trade for Maggette this summer.

When Maggette and Brand opted out, they got far enough under the cap to sign Davis. The Clippers still own Maggette's Bird rights, and will until they either renounce or he signs with somebody else. I suspect they'll get a deal in place with Brand but not sign him, and see if they can move Maggette via somebody's trade exception.

And even though we can't give away next year's first, we could trade anything (Strawberry, who makes almost nothing, a conditional 2nd rounder in 2013, etc...) in a sign and trade. But as I said above, why would the Clippers do us that favor unless getting something valuable back?

I have to agree. It is annoying as hell. ''Trade him.'' ''Ah failure.'' It is so irritating to see trade threads and ''we suck'' threads after every damn loss. Maybe this is why every other sport team fans look down on Suns fans like we are bitchy, soft bandwagon fans.

I've complained and the things I complained about have been changed so I'm pretty happy with the direction Kerr is going. He is addressing our weaknesses. Nothing wrong with that.

Don't trade Barbosa, he is a scoring/uptempo specialist now that will get better with some different, more effective coaching.

Diaw I wanted to trade but now I think he was always playing out of position.
Maybe he isn't a point forward or a power forward or center but a versatile small forward. He can abuse most small forwards inside with his size and his outside shot looked improved and he was hitting 3's occasionally. Let him play his natural position, Amare at his natural position and Shaq or Lopez to anchor the middle.

I like the Suns this way and they can always go small if the situation comes up. They are better because now they can match up big too.

Yes, they had to renounce his rights in order to tender the offer to Davis. Maggette cannot be involved in a sign and trade this year. The only way he gets more than the MLE is if Golden State or Philly make him an offer over the MLE.
