The Clipper's Other Free Agent

While everyone's talking about Elton Brand -- and rightly so -- the free agent who could sway the balance of power in the Western Conference is Corey Maggette.

It could be awhile before Maggette chooses his destination because he's waiting to see what happens in Philadelphia and Golden State, the only two big spenders beneath the salary cap. If either of those two clubs doesn't get its top targets, they could turn to Maggette and offer him more than the mid-level exception of roughly $6 million per year.

If Maggette, who was set to make $7 million next season before opting out of his contract, doesn't end up with the Sixers or Warriors, his landing spot will be of major significance out West.

San Antonio, New Orleans and Utah are all interested in Maggette. And in the East, Orlando, Boston and Cleveland have expressed interest.

I'll deal with those Eastern scenarios later, but first the really intriguing stuff -- the West.

If one of those three Western powers adds Maggette, it probably positions itself as the Lakers' No. 1 obstacle next May.

Imagine Maggette in San Antonio. We all saw how the Spurs struggled to score vs. L.A. Well, adding Maggette would solve that problem. It would also give San Antonio a much needed boost in athleticism. He's not much of a defender, but he'd get a lot better on that end playing in San Antonio's system.

If I'm Maggette, though, the Spurs would not be my top choice. He would be the fourth option and there could be crucial stretches when he'd find himself on the bench while Popovich opts for Bruce Bowen's defense. It's not a bad fit, but I think there are better.

In Utah, Maggette would slide in next to Deron Williams and immediately solve the Jazz's "lack of athleticism" issue. With Andrei Kirilenko's decline, the Jazz can't become a true contender with weak scorers at both the 2 and 3 spots.

While Ronnie Brewer did an admirable job at shooting guard last season, moving him to the bench would drastically improve the Jazz's depth. And adding a slasher like Maggette to a club that features the outside shooting of Mehmet Okur and Kyle Korver would be a great extra weapon.

Maggette would seem to play a larger role in Utah than he would in San Antonio, but after spending the last eight seasons in La-La, from a social standpoint, Salt Lake City would be a huge drop-off.

Which leads us to New Orleans. This seems like the perfect fit for Maggette. The Hornets need a starting caliber two-guard in the worst way, and Maggette clearly fits the bill.

Imagine the offensive firepower of Chris Paul, Maggette, Peja Stojakovic and David West. And Maggette couldn't ask for a better point guard to play with than Paul.

Plus, Maggette would be part of something grand, new and fresh in New Orleans. In San Antonio, where they've already won four titles in the last nine years, he'd be just the latest role player (Horry, Finley, Mohammed, etc. …) flown in to aid the big boys in another championship run.

And in Utah, well, he'd be in Utah.

But in New Orleans, he could be a key cog in helping this franchise challenge for a Western Conference title -- and maybe more. If he goes to the Hornets and they win the West, he'd be viewed as the difference. And he'll still be able to get his 17 points a game there.

That's not to mention the role he could play in helping re-energize a city in need.

I'm always looking for a new young team to reach elite status, so I'd like to see Maggette in New Orleans. In the West, Utah would be my second choice for him.

Turning to the East, I don't think Boston's the place for him. He'd come off the bench behind Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, and he's probably not even their first choice: James Posey is.

Cleveland? He'd probably make them better, but I don't think he gets them to Title Town. And the Cavs have to be careful not to dole out long-term deals that don't make them a perennial championship contender.

If Maggette goes East, he should go to Orlando. It's a similar situation to New Orleans, where the addition of Maggette would take a young, improving team to the next level.

The Magic already have one of the most offensively-productive frontlines in the league in Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis. But they are woefully deficient in the backcourt, especially at two guard.

Maggette's presence might move them ahead of everyone in the East except Boston.

So if I'm Maggette, and I have to settle for mid-level money, I'm settling in New Orleans or Orlando.

Reports are that Brand is leaning toward returning to the Clippers. This means that the Warriors are going to be foreced to do SOMETHING or fall back into early lottery. Signing Maggette is not a replacement for Baron, but it would limit the damage of losing Davis. Considering how much the Warriors need Maggette and how much money they can offer, I have to wonder just how much Maggette is prepared to lose to go to a top playoff team. From the Suns standpoint, I'm rooting for his agent to insiist they "Show the Money."

Wow. Maggette is not THAT good. The answer to the Spurs scoring problems vs. the Lakers? Puhleez.

Maggette will help a team, but he is not the answer for any team.

If I were running the Warriors.. I would not offer any big contract to anyone this year. I'd take my lumps next year and keep my payroll low. Get into the lottery and wait for the big names coming over the next few years. I would not give Maggette a large contract.

Large is relative. Maggette is worth more than an MLE.

I actually think Maggette would be a pretty good fit in Nellie's system. A lineup of Ellis, Maggette, Jackson, Harrington and Biedrins would be pretty fun to watch.

If Golden State, Philadelphia and the Clippers exhaust their cap space on others, we'll be the only team (I think) that can give him a contract above the MLE, via the $8 million Kurt Thomas trade exception. It's too bad we're already above the luxury tax limit because of bad contracts (i.e. Diaw) and we've traded away any prospects of consequence (so we'd have the money to overpay), or we'd have a chance at trading for Maggette (who I think is vastly underrated).

Just what I was thinking. When did Maggette become such a great player? you know things are slow when Maggette is getting this much attention.

Maggette is not a star but he is extremely good. he avg. 22pts last season and gets to the FT line about 10-12 per game and is a well above avg. FT shooter. he would be a huge improvement for many teams and will make a team better...

Maggette>Bell>Barbosa
SUNS are weak at SG and SF.
A hypothetical Maggette signing here would be an improvement but not ideal IMO.

His offensive slashing game is similar to Grant Hill (but Maggette is better). His defense is worse, and he's not an improvement over Hill from the outside.

We'd be better off adding James Jones.

Did I just say that?

Mageette has nothing to do with us. It's just odd that he's being advertised as an MLE guy, when he should be getting more money. In any case, his presence is slowing down a lot of free agency activity because teams under the LT are all looking at him.

His ******** opted out in an offseason where everyone's checkbook is closed. And he had plenty of time to negotiate an extension prior to opting out.

These athletes opt out of their contracts on the basis of longer term financial security, but if they really had long term focus you'd think they would look even farther down the road.

I disagree on this one. There are only a few top players out there and with Brand most likely ending back up in L.A., the next class are all restricted free angent who are likely to be matched by their teams. If Maggette holds out from committing to soon, he may get a nice long term deal from the Warriors, 76ers, or if Brand surprises, the Clippers. Sure things may not fall his way, but I don't think he would have been much better off next year.

Worst case scenario this year he gets the MLE. Worst case scenario next year is he gets his guaranteed nearly 8mil and gets the MLE.

I find the latter to be much better.

Huh? The MLE is not 8 million. You are assuming he'd get 8 million next year, there's absolutely no guarantee to it. He has just as much chance this year to get that 8 as he would next year.

If Maggette had not opted out he would have received 8 million next year. That's what YJGS is referring to.

The opt out process involves giving up some immediate money for a longer term contract at a lower starting pay.

Why not wait? Some of it may be control. Guys in the last year of their contracts get moved to somebody looking for cap space. This can be to a team that won't even play the guy since he's not part of their future.

Of course, the contract has to be compared to what it given up. My guess is that Marion will get well under $10 million a year next contract, so it could take two years to regain what he would have given up by staying one more year.

This whole thread is about how he opted out of 8 million guaranteed this offseason for 3 potential suitors. Try to keep up.

SURPRISE!!! No really, Surprise.

I don't think anyone is saying Maggette is a star. But I really beleive he is an above average player and would have a lot to offer the Suns. Remember a few years back when the Clippers gave us trouble in the playoffs. He had a lot to do with it, beside Brand of course.

I'll just wait and see what kind of deal he gets, I believe you'll be eating crow when all is said and done.

You're right, I'm sure the players and their agents have no idea what the long term outlook is. /sarcasm

The reality is Maggette is the best FA in a very weak class. There may not be many teams with huge amounts of cap space, but he doesn't have to compete with anyone else for those limited dollars. There's a very real possibility that he signs with Philadelphia or GS for the same amount per year as he's getting now or the worst case scenario is he signs with a team like SA or Boston for the MLE and plays for a championship.

Either way, this gets Maggette off of a Clippers team that he can't stand, guarantees him another long term deal (after watching Livingston wreck his knee on a gimmie lay-up would you want to risk giving up a long-term deal because you might make a few more million if you wait) and gives him the opportunity to play for a championship if that's what he wants.
