This IS a major announcement. Franchises begin winning in the front offices. I am disappointed it's not a traditional basketball guy. I was hoping someone from the Lakers, Spurs, Celtics that could bring those franchises philosophies and winning attitude to this team. Not sure how a former player agent will help, aside from obviously having a deep understanding of player salaries. Maybe the GM will be more of a basketball guy. Maybe they already have their GM to go along with the President position?

I think we would have heard about someone filling the GM position if that were the case. Who knows, the Hedo thing really took us all by surprise too.

I think for all practical purposes Lon Babby will be the acting GM although he will have the title president for basketball operations. Whereas the GM will play the role formerly filled by David Griffin.

Isn't that kind of backwards of how it usually works? Or were the Suns doing it backwards before? Kerr was always tasked with making the decisions, but almost all of the decisions were really made by Griffin (president) and West (vice president).

Unless I'm misreading this, it looks like Babby's job is to hire the GM. At least as a former agent he wont be a banker.

I was hoping it will be a trade too, but it is more likely the introduction of Turkoglu or a new GM or both.

I'm not sure GM part but Turk will most likely be there. Acc Turkish Media he left National Team Camp yesterday to sign contract with Suns and will join back them on Friday at Italy.

Yes, it sounds backwards but then again, Sarver has his own way of doing things. I've just never have figured him out.

He seems alright. Definitely knows what his limits are. Knows he is not a talent evaluator and plans on bringing in a top flight basketball mind or so he says.

They are going to have a dedicated NBA scouting staff to be more informed on free agent decisions. Says the current model where they scout college players for a whole year before they sign them to a 9 million contract but sign FAs to these huge 70 million contracts without as much scouting work makes no sense.

Sarver: "This business is a lot more complicated than I thought 6 years ago."

Really!? ;)

Sarver: "As long as steve and grant are here we feel an obligation to be as successful as possible."

"I don't have the patience to sit here and be terrible for 3 or 4 years, and I don't think we have the players to be terrible even if we wanted to."

"Trades will be the best way to get a true franchise player in the next few years and NOT free agency. That's why they have these multiple mid range deals now."

Q: You find someone to play PF?

Gentry: "We're looking." (Everyone laughs).

I thought it was an interesting press conference. Babby looks like a good addition, but with the city's track record hiring agents, I'm going to reserve judgment. The most surprising thing to me was some of the things that Sarver said, which many people here have talked about in the past.

Deja vu.

Dell Demps was interviewed for the GM spot Monday. I would guess he's the guy because Kevin Pritchard is close to signing with the Hornets.

My understaning was the question was:

"You find someone to play SF?"

Which is funnier.

This is interesting. I had a feeling this might be the plan. If it is, I like the strategy. Just so long as they don't actually think this is the finished package. With moderate, fairly priced players, and one extremely valuable commodity in an excellent player with a large, expiring contract, we have a lot to bring to the table. I can almost see the finish line, the culmination of this polished line-up, walking in that dominant big man. I just don't know who that dominant big man is. I keep looking through rosters, and for the life of me, I can't figure out who it could be.
