The big difference between Marion and JJ is age. JJ's youth made it a gamble that could really pay off. With Marion, there's no more upside than what you see.

The only one that will pay off for is JJ. Atlanta is now saddled with a 20M a year contract, more than anybody on the spurs, mavs, suns, Pistons makes. Teams that have a shot at winning a championship can only take that kind of chance if the player is a shaq(in his prime) or a kobe. Amare is in that class of player, though his injury and durability uncertainly make a 20M contract a huge risk in his case. JJ is a great talent, though no where near as good as kobe. For 10-15M he could be a good piece of a championship team, but for 20M, forget it. And now JJ is afraid to go to the hoop strong after his face was broken. As far as shawn, he must be smoking chronic if he thinks he's even even 15M/yr at 31 years old. How does shawn think he's worth nearly 2x steve Nashs salary, he's in his own little world.

That would be frightening if it were true, but it isn't. Johnson's contract was front-loaded with a bonus, so it had a huge number in the first year, but now it's back to normal max levels. He averages about $14.2 million over the last three years of the deal -- less than Stoudemire, for example, and obviously much less than Marion. It has turned out to be a slight overpayment, but not a crippling one.

We'll see what Marion gets...Another team out west may break the bank just to steal an allstar and try to knock the Suns off contender status.

Will Marion get 60 million over three years like he's supposedly asking? I cant say it absolutely wouldnt happen. But that could just be his asking price...some team could still swoop in and offer him a 3/yr 50+ mill offer that might still grab his attention. I dont even know if the Suns have an inkling to match that offer.

The trend nowadays is for teams to come in to steal a player and offer so much money that the other team doesnt want to match it. Its happened so many times with so many players I cant believe some of you are still disbelievers and act shocked everytime it happens. For Marions "faults" he's still producing at a high level and would fit in many teams because of his all around game. He gives points, boards, steals, defense, quickness....What team doesnt need some or all of that? Marion could be plugged in virtually anywhere.

Far as Marions age...some team will still believe he has another 2-3 good years in him. Thats why he will get a good price on a 3 year deal.

There's no more upside because he's a current allstar! Jeesh mon...
There's no upside because he's an all-star that has only marginally improved since his second year in the league.

'01-'02 season: 17.3ppg, 10.7rpg, 2.0apg, 1.4bpg in 36.2mpg
'06-'07 season: 17.5ppg, 9.8ppg, 1.7apg, 1.5bpg in 37.6mpg

The only area he's really improved is his shooting percentage. If he had a Nash-like work ethic in the offseason, he'd be a truly dominant player.

point taken, my bad. i still dont like the fact that JJ doesnt want to finish in traffic anymore due to the risk of injury, he jukes aroun and shoots over guys instead of taking it to the rack. He is certainbly less of an impact player that stat, way less. marions deal is a bad one, but at least its almost over, maybe sooner than we think.

JJ rarely ever wanted to finish in traffic before the injury...

Before the injury, he would take it to the rack against a smaller or weaker defender who overplayed him. Now he seems reluctant against anyone, which just makes him more predictable come crunchtime, not a good thing for your star player.
