The problem I have with KTAR in general is that they are too close with the professional teams. Listening to the station when news breaks from one of the three big franchises is basically the same as a press release from the team's public relations department.

Well I was listening to Gambo and Ash the other day. Not sure if it was before or after he found out he was fired (demoted), but he went off on Gambo, calling him an idiot and a moron.

Even though he was correct, because Gambo is a NY homer and makes mistakes all the time, it was very unprofessional. If he wasn't demoted already, that rant would have done it.

Do you happen to remember the day? Maybe I can catch it on their archives.

Great - fire the only sportscaster there that is actually a fan of the local teams first.

Not some Yankee/Cub/etc fan first.

I agree. I'm not necessarily a fan of Asher in particular, but this is important. I was actually living in NY for most of the last 12 years, and I loved getting local team coverage when home in Phoenix. I'd rather not listen to someone who has his/her eye on another market first.

That's really a stupid KTAR decision. Looks like will benefit 910 as Jurecki and Bickley will be 10x better in afternoon than Doug and Wolf.

And I like Wolfley. I think he is a great color analyst for Cards games and is enjoyable to listen to. Not for 4 hours in the afternoon.

Asher was Abbott to Gambo's Costello. Break that up and you are looking for bad radio.

I agree 100% with everything you said. Just wish Chuck and Vince started earlier now since I started listening at 5am. Mike and Mike is nice for national stuff, but not once football season starts.

Burns just this week was already guest hosting with Gambo. I think it was Thursday or Friday forget which. It was actually a good show, they worked well off of each other. Gambo actually sounded smarter, which was odd.

Maybe the tone was different when you heard it which made it different, but they have that same exact argument every single day. Pretty much 50% of their show was "Gambo mispronounced a word lets make fun of him".

I didn't like Gambo or ASH, but damn why move Wolf? Hopefully they'll find some new talent with local interest.

Wolf's ads putting down every company but the ones he's promoting, pisses me off, but oh well.

I don't know how any of you can even stand to listen to local sports radio beyond breaking news. It's a wasteland, IMO. At least I knew Asher and what a good guy he is, so this does it for me.

I get all my breaking news in text messages now, so I guess I'll never have to turn on the radio again ...

Anyone remember when KTAR was locally O/O and was a nice, middle-of-the-road refuge from the screaming FM jockies and AM political junkies? Sports talk only at 6pm to 10pm weeknights. It was wonderful ...

Asher is different from every other local radio show host in the Valley: he's actually a die hard fan of the local teams. Everyone else is a transplant who brought their allegiances with them. Asher's co-host Gambo drove me nuts with his incessant talk of New York teams.

Here in L.A., just about every sports personality is a fan of all local sports teams (football either goes Chargers or Raiders). It makes for more passionate discussion amongst the casters and the fans. In PHX, it seemed as if the radio hosts catered to other transplant fan. That's the main reason I stopped listening to the local guys and got satellite radio before I moved.

Didn't Jude LaCava do that slot back in the day. He was better on radio than TV.

Asher will show up on the other station. Bet on it. As soon as his contract is done at KTAR and he finishes mopping the floors. He will take listeners with him. That's how it works.

All this talk why would you want to listen to local stuff is lame. I am from Phoenix and I want to hear about Phoenix/Arizona. I don't care about the Red Sox, NY Jets or the LSU Tigers unless it is important. Give me 80% local.

Not a very big league move by a town with the major sports teams plus a major university. As stated before, it was nice to have a diehard like us on the air. I love Wolf but IMO he is on the payroll, he wont call anyone out. Nobody on KTAR would. Bick and MJ are our best bet now. Sucks to have the old Edge 1039 morning show giving us our sports morning show now. BIG mistake by KTAR, somebody needs to step up in the local game.

I undertand he is a big fan of the Cards (seeing as he played for them) but the passion behind his discussions about the Suns, D-Backs, Yotes and the AZ college teams were lukewarm at best. He wasn't any better at that subject than Jurecki, who is also more known for his in depth knowledge of the Cards.

Asher was the ONLY radio personality in PHX that talked about our teams with genuine enthusiasm. I bet if he did his broadcast with another caster like him, it would be an amazing show. Unfortunately, I think the big boys of these stations know the abundance of transplant fans in the Valley and feel they should cater to them in some way.

This is an example (a wild one at that) of what I would like to hear from our local radio guys. I want to hear some passion and fire!

Chad Dukes hosted a show here in AZ a few years back on 101.5 Free-FM. (Before the station flipped and turned into the crap that it is now.)

"Big O and Dukes" was freaking hilarious and I was pissed when they moved. They did a show in DC for awhile before their station flipped to sports.

They're back together now doing a few podcasts a week @ http://www.bigoanddukes.com Though Dukes still does a sports show with LaVar Arrington during the day.

Guess I will have to check that out. I can't stand Gambo. I heard Ash talking the other day about something he said that might get him fired. I thought he was kidding. I can't remember what the hell it was though or if it had anything to do with anything. Perhaps he knew this was coming.

Guess I will move to 1060 AM in the morning, not that it matters all that much now that my work commute is only 8 minutes. :)

I think Calvisi is way over the top. He is the epitome of the cheesey radio guy. I don't dislike him, but there are some days when I just can't listen to him at all.

Agree. This plus the "THE MOST AMAZING THING IN THE WORLD JUST HAPPENED!!!...we'll tell you what it is after this" teases is why I stopped listening to 620.

On the drive to work, I just listen to the iPod, then start streaming Chuck & Vince when I get to the office. I miss the first hour of the show, but stream the podcast later that day.

While I'm on the subject, I used to listen to Bickley and MJ every day, too, but it seems like whenever I tune them in, they're either replaying an interview they've already aired, replaying a huge piece of the Dan Patrick show or talking to that concert promoter that has nothing to do with sports.
