Thats a completely unbalanced and unfair measure. "Ulis got lit up by Steph curry". Well who doesnt? Ulis has the 1 thing all great defenders have, and thats the desire to be a great defender. Ulis is scrappy and tries very hard. He can absolutely improve. Unlike guys like Melo who have no interest in even learning to play defense. Ulis has excellent court vision, scoring ability and the willpower to become a good defender. Thats an easy decision for me.

And im not surprised by Mcdonoughs preference for Ball over Fultz. That mush headed moron has been nothing but a disgrace to Valley sports since he got here. It infuriates me hes still employed. Youd think Sarver wouldve realized this putz has no long term vision after the B.Knight/Lakers pick/Isiah Thomas/Dragic trainwreck.

The guys done nothing right since he got here. Except for draft Booker. And how long is he going to milk that? We might pick #1 overall for the 1st time in Suns history. That tells me our GM is the worst GM we've had in suns history.

I love Ulis was my favorite kid on the UK team, I pointed out repeatedly how Calipari screwed that team over because he played the Harrison twins out of a recruiting promise to the dad, and it reduced the minutes Ulis played as a freshman.

That said, Ulis will never be a really good defender he's just too small, he plays very hard but the way he tries to defend is get up under the guy and hound him on the dribble. He was a menace doing that in college, but there's very few guys good enough to do that in the NBA, players are just too good. What Curry did to him was essentially like martial arts, use his aggressiveness against him. He'd come up Steph would use his dribble and footwork to get space and either nail the 3 or blow by him to the basket for a layup. You almost felt sorry for Ulis he was completely helpless.

Again Curry is a special player but the NBA is full of special players at PG, Harden, Westbrook, Wall, Lillard, Curry. It's just very unlikely you will ever have a good defensive team if he's the starting PG. he absolutely can be a terrific role player in the NBA, but as a starter playing starters minutes teams are just going to attack him on defense.

Ulis is not helpless. As said, his will and energy to become a great defender is his greatest asset. He can be taught.

And this is also an unfair expectation for Ulis as a PG. Some of the top PGs in the NBA are not great defenders either. Why does Ulis have to be this shutdown guy, but they dont?
Lillard
D'angelo
Thomas
Occasionally John Wall (guy who proves that effort is the difference maker on D)
Rose (when uninjured)

Then you look at other stars like Harden, Wiggins, Melo who dont play a lick of defense at all.

The very fact that Ulis wants to be a good defender immediately vaults him above everybody listed as a defender, because none of them care to be.

Lets not lose sight that Ulis was a rookie and will only improve, especially on defense.

No its not. Elite scorer. Greater need.

Leonard Fournette might be the next Adrian Peterson. Is it insane if we pass on him? Nope. Same concept.

No.

Leonard Fournette is a physical freak. Markannen is nothing of the sort, isn't a great rebounder or rim protector.

That comparison makes
Your comment even more laughable

Of course he will, but he's not going to get 3 inches taller.

There have been very few guys that size who succeed in the NBA, he'll be a terrific role player but I don't think he'll ever be a starting PG on a really good team, he's just too small. He's strong, he plays hard, he's a smart kid, he'll get better but he won't get taller which is his issue.

Russell was on a terrible team and the lakers want Lonzo to move him off the ball so I'm not defending him at all.

Lillard is a GREAT scorer, Ulis is a very good player career average so far 22.5 and 6 APG. Look if Ulis winds up that good on offense people won't care as much about his defense.

IT is a good comparison, similar size, struggles to guard people, but he put up 29 and 6 so people are ok with him. I don't think Ulis is ever going to average even 20 PPG.

I think it's always good to examine opinions when people do not fit stereotypes.

......I dont even know how to respond to this. Its like 100% of it went over your head. Do you understand the concept of talent vs needs?

Leonard, while more talented than Gareon Conley, is less of a need for the Cards and therefore Conley would be a better pick.

Ball, while more talent than Markkanen, is less of a need for the Suns and therefore Markkanen would be a better pick.

Again, youre putting unfair expectations on Ulis that others dont even live up to.

Lillard is a superstar. But you realize his career PPG is only 22. So if Ulis were putting up 20, he'd be amongst the top PGs in the NBA.

Steve Nash is a legend and on his career hes a 15 and 8 guy.

I think ulis is very very capable of being a 15-8 guy every night.

I don't know if you lack comprehension or you just like to do this because you enjoy disagreeing with people.

Looks like you just realized im right. You think certain players are better than they are. But when it comes to stats, you see they are human.

Google it. Superstar Lillard is only a 22 PPG guy. Nash is a 15-8 career guy. Im not saying Ulis is Lillard or Nash, but if we are playing money ball and focusing on stats, Ulis can absolutely be a consistent 15-8.

If we were playing money ball, they wouldn't just be looking at PPG and APG. They would be looking at plus, minus on the floor and host of other things to determine if the guy makes his team more efficient when on the floor which translates to wins. The NBA is full of guys who put up good stats but will never reach the level of a Nash or other guys like him.

and they might be smart enough to grasp that a guy who played 18 seasons has both a ramp up, a peak, and a ramp down to his career. That is the career average for Nash and what he was at his peak are not the same thing.

Nash at his peak was 18 ppg 11 apg 50+ 40+ 90+, that's why he was a legend. I like Ulis but if he even once in his career puts up numbers close to that I'll be surprised, hell if Lillard does that I'll be surprised.

Lillard has only played 5 years and he just entered his peak years around 25 years old. since then he's been 25 PPG and 27 PPG I'm going to guess he's over 22 PPG for awhile now.

No I realized I was right months ago when I said most of your posts are just for the sake of arguing.

Agreed. I only see Ulis as a backup, but an extremely good back up. Hopefully to Fultz or Ball :)

This is almost exactly what I wrote about IT. I'm not saying Ulis will achieve the same results but I'm not so sure about it anymore.

Dude you canNOT begin to compare the bpa/need argument between the NFL and NBA. In the NFL you have 22 starters at different positions on offense and defense. In the NBA you field 5 guys that garner the lions share of minutes. The impact a single player has on a basketball team compared to on a football team is enormously greater unless you're talking about a great QB, and even then it's questionable comparing the two.

Not a single team in the history of the NBA would draft anyone over Jordan knowing his talent now, even if they already had the second best sg in history behind him and a glaring need at center. I'd argue even the rockets, if they had a do-over, would draft Jordan over Akeem - and they won two championships with Akeem!

Sam Bowie was supposed to be great, so it's difficult to know if Portland made the epic blunder that you suggest teams should take in drafting need over talent. But something tells me even had Bowie panned out the Blazers would still be ridiculed for drafting him over Jordan just because they already had Clyde.

Nash isn't a legend for 15 and 8. He's a legend for the SSOL years and those numbers and revolutionizing the game with dantoni

And two MVP years. Nash was a late bloomer. So his stats will not reflect his impact.

I would not underestimate Ulis, though. The guy gets everyone involved. If his shooting improves, even a little, he will have huge impact. He also makes a defensive impact.

If Ulis is the PGOTF it shouldn't start until 2019 at the earliest. It will take him a couple years to build strength and learn to run a team playing significant minutes for a full season.

If you look at Isaiah he's almost like a bowling ball physically. He bounces of guys in the lane and it doesn't affect him. IT must have 30 lbs on Ulis.
