We used to have a football team... I wish we still did. Sometimes I question why I went to a college with no football team, considering I love watching football.

I think I'm going to require that wherever I go to grad school must have a football program.

May I recommend the University of Arkansas-Monticello...home of the "Boll Weevils" and just think, every year you can watch them play the Arkansas Tech "Wonderboys".

And you can sit in the stands, drink beer, and watch the team play "Grab the QB's Crotch"


Beats the hell out of the "Gold".

ESPN News just had an interview with Wade, who apparently had not heard of the change:

ESPN: Your alma mater, Marquette, they've changed their nickname to the Gold. What do you think of that?

Wade: To that what?

ESPN: To the Gold. The Marquette Gold. That's what they're going with now.

Wade: [Pause. Furrows his brow.] Oh I gotta call. I gotta call in on that one. I don't know how that sounds.

ESPN: We're breaking some news here?

Wade: I heard they was trying to change it back to Warriors.

ESPN: No I guess they're going with Gold. I'm surprised they didn't call you to check if it was okay with you.

Wade: [Squints. Incredulous.] The Gold? [Beat.] No I'm gonna make a phone call to to Marquette after we get off this. [Laughs] I don't know about that one.

ESPN: So that might change.

Wade: The Gold? The Marquette Gold?

ESPN: All right Dwyane, so far so good, and I know your word carries a lot of weight at Marquette as well as Miami, so congratulations. Enjoy the rest of the playoffs.

In 1994, after 40+ years of being the Marquette Warriors, our board of trustees caved to the PC police and decided the Warriors wasn't conducive to the spirit of Marquette and human dignity etc etc. So, they brought it up, and without consulting the students and alumni, the president at the time changed it to Golden Eagles. There was a huge outcry from a lot of people about the change.

Anyway, last year at the graduation ceremonies one member from the board of trustees said that he and another unnamed trustee would donate 1 million dollars each to MU if they changed it back to Warriors. Thus, starting the whole debate over again. So for the past year, the board of trustees and marquette administration polled alumni, students, fans, etc on which name they would prefer - Warrios or Golden Eagles.

Yesterday was supposed be the final decision, but instead they throw all of us a curveball and decide to change the name yet again. And again, throwing dirt in the faces of students, alumni and parents. It's a crock.

Sorry to hear all this, Kate. I've been paying attention to this change on ESPN and have been thinking of you.

If it makes you feel any better, my college is "The Profs." What the "F" is a prof, you ask? A professor. We used to be an all teachers college ... 75 years ago! I say the fighting Profs take on the Marquette Gold. Woo hoo!
