Thats right, Im starting this thread.

Situation: The Cardinals need a franchise QB. He is currently not on this roster. Its not Kolb. Skelton will have a darn good career, as a darn good backup.

Options:
a. 2013 draft - Matt Barkley is the consensus best overall QB available.

b. Free agency

Problem:
a. Cardinals will need near-#1 pick to take him. Odds are we'll be around pick 9-13.

b. USC QBs whose names start with "M". Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez.

c. Franchise QBs dont become available in FA.

For your consideration: AZ has a good history with players named "Barkley"

Question: Should the Cardinals bet the house ala' the Redskins last year, and move up to take Matt Barkley?

I think many think Tyler Wilson will go ahead of Barkley.

Despite being a Trojan I actually do like Barkley, I don't think he's a great player but I think he can be a good solid NFL QB, and he has starter talent.

I know he's been very well coached for a long time which makes you wonder what his ceiling is, but he was REALLY good last year.

Consider private coaching growing up, 4 years at Mater Dei, Kiffin may be an idiot but he can coach QB's and before that Carroll's staff.

He's just never struck me as wow that kid is going to be a Pro Bowler.

But he's played a lot more in college than Wilson has.

I wouldn't mind getting one of those guys come April and I think the Cards will have a very real shot at getting one, but Whisenhunt, Graves and company painted this team in such a corner with the Oline they may just have to select the top tackle in the draft at the expense of a legit QB prospect.

If we suck real bad, we will have a good look at some awesome options, the less we suck, the more our draft will suck. We will not suck on purpose this year with Whiz's job and rep being on the line, good thing his job and rep has never been dependant on his O-line, or we wouldn't be having this discussion. :D

Or we could just tank our season and purposely lose for a chance to get Barkley or whoever emerges as the top QB this year -- I seem to recall a certain poster advocating zeously for this last year! (too soon?)

I really believe Whiz is gonna give Lindley his shot in 2013. And, I don't believe we'll suck enough to put ourselves in a position to draft Barkley - who, and maybe it's just me, reminds me of Troy Aikman.

With the 10th pick in the 2013 draft -- The AZ Cardinals select EJ Manuel, QB, Florida State.

Every time I think of Barkley, I have visions of Jimmy Clausen running through my head.

Pass.

I dunno....been watching lots of teams....most of the lower tier teams already have their young QB prospect......we can likely get one of the top two choices around 10 or 12....which means maybe we can trade down and pick up some picks.......

okay...poor joke.

Irrelevant ? at the moment. Skelton is going to start. We have to see how he plays for a season as a full time starter before this is even a concern.

You should watch more film. Barkley can make all the throws, and shows great downfield touch -- Clausen isn't remotely close to Barkley's skill level. Barkley is going to be the consensus #1 pick, much like Luck.

Yea... I wouldn't compare Barkley to Clausen... at all. I actually posted above that he reminds me of Aikman - and might be a bit more athletic than Aikman was.
But, I don't think he'll be the clear-cut #1 as Luck was...

This is funny because a lot of people are saying the coaches need to give Skelton a chance, yet they too have really no faith in him at all because these sort of threads pop up LOL. I think Skelton has accuracy flaws which are hard to improve but I want to give the guy a chance because there was a day which one would say as a young QB he is right on schedule to being a starter. Let's see what Skelton can do, I'm in a way excited about what could happen with him this season. It is a small chance because of his accuracy in my opinion but there is a chance we really might have our QB of the future now :)

Maybe I shouldn't, but I'm gonna do it anyway

I don't know why, I'm just not enamored with Barkley. Just for fun, I compared him to Clausen. 6'2", 225-ish. Through 3 years in college, they have comparable stats (except for TD's).

Like someone else said, maybe he can make more of the throws, but I get the same feeling about his ceiling at the next level as I had with Clausen, Joey Harrington, or Brady Quinn. Which is to say, I don't think it is very high.

Then again, I thought the same thing about Cam Newton, so I could be wrong. :D

I think Skelton is an adequate game managing QB. He's not a guy to go out and win you games. The Cardinals top two priorities going into next years offseason have to be spending top shelf coin on the best Olinemen in FA and doing whatever it takes to land Barkley or Wilson. No more scrubs or castoffs from other teams and no more projects. The cardinals are the only team is this division consistently moving backwards.

If we are talking about drafting a QB then shouldnt this be based on the assumption Skelton struggles?

I would take Barkley, but it does not mean I would do "everything we can" to get him. I certainly would not give up future firsts Redskins style. And odds are one or 2 more QBs are going to emerge as high draft targets during the college season.

If Skelton plays really well this year then we won't have to worry about it. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with ruminating on it based on the QB play we've seen since Warner retired.

I believe this team has enough talent that it should go for broke and address the QB and oline with every resource available. The rest of the team is pretty darn solid imo.

I'm not inferring the Cardinals tank to get a prospect. I've never been a fan of that and never will be. The Cards anemic offense, Levi out and tough schedule all point to a down year. I like Skelton, but unless he makes major strides this year the Cardinals are going to have a lot of down to mediocre years if Skelton is the long term answer at QB.

This. Take a QB with the first pick and then OT with every pick left...and I'm a BPA believer too.

I think we'll either see Skelton suck, skelton do mediocre, or Skelton take the reigns and run with it. (obviously)

If he sucks, his place on the team for 2013 is still there. But we would be forced to address the situation, either in FA, or draft.

But we don't know who will be a free agent, or if anyone might be cut. We don't know where we're going to be picking.

I don't want us tanking. If we still end up with say #1 overall, some want Wilson, others want Barkley. At this point I'd take Barkley. This kid has looked like a future pro since I first saw him under center at USC. Seen a lot more of him than Wilson. So I really want to see what both, but particularly Wilson does next season.

If Skelton is mediocre, then you still have to address it. But trading big picks may not be the best way.

If he's good, then we don't.

So at the end of the NFL/college season we'll have the info we need of whether we need one, where we will pick, etc.

I don't think I'd make a RGIII deal, that's just way too much. A little less than that? Maybe. There's still a lot of time and opportunity between now and then...and even then....who do we want Barkley or Wilson?

Never hurts to start the conversation, but there is way too many unknowns to get far into one.

Ugh I hate Clausen. Never liked him. Weakish arm. Isn't believable and cannot lead. Throwing his Notre Dame players under the bus and lying at Gruden's camp is something I'll never forget. I think Barkley looks like a QB, I never thought Clausen did. To me, regardless of numbers one to me looks like rib eye steak, another like ground chuck.

I think Barkley is a QB. In every sense a QB can be. I suspect Floyd who can catch badly thrown passes, helped Clausen get drafted and made him look better than he was otherwise. Him and Golden Tate. Luck is the only QB that looks more pro ready than I believe Barkley will be. At least to me. But that is because of the mental and at the line calls. I think Barkley is probably not as sufficient in this area (like every other QB the last 20 years....so it isn't saying much negatively) but is a better pure passer than Luck. Regardless of not being up to the Luck/Manning standards at line checking and such, in every other way he looks like a QB. Even then I would say he is good, just not off the charts at what Luck/Manning do.

Barkley looks like a QB who could start in the NFL without any doubt in my mind. I don't know how Clausen even put up the numbers he did at Notre Dame.

Barkley as a freshman looked like he was a senior in some ways. Just go in there and ran the thing like a pro as a freshman. I was impressed the first time I saw Barkley. Immediately I started thinking, wow...this guy might be the best USC quarterback of the recent bunch. Which of course mostly meant better than Palmer. But the others did good on a college level.

He's one of the few Trojans I actually like.

And he's been a friend of my niece since they were two. My sister and his mother are likethis. Please, please, please draft him so I can be the board know-it-all on what's going on with Matt. Pretty please.

Wait. I thought of something even more important on the scoop-scale. My niece is friends with his girlfriend. Come on Michael-Graves-Whiz get 'er done!
