Cheese no offense man but that's the single most defeatest attitude imaginable.

Could we at least play a few games before pronouncing the season good for nothing but training Leinart?

I think you need to rethink this man, with a top 10 defense anything is possible, we don't have to have even an average O line to make a run at it, a bad one coached well will do.

It's not like we are the Bears with limited offensive weapons, or even the Vikes, sheesh, we have Boldin, and Fitz and Edge and that's enough to at least give it a whirl.

This season we get back Rolle and Berry, we lose Dansby but we also picked up some D linemen and our starting MLB is back.

Man, let's actually lose a few games before we start a QB controversy, I have faith in Matt, he's going to put major heat on Warner and if he does so be it but at least lets start out going with Kurt and let them fight it out. Once the coaching staff believes Matt is the best chance to win then I'm all for him playing, they can't know that though for sure unless one of two things happen.

A. Warner gets hurt

B. Warner plays badly enough to be the reason we lose a couple ballgames or at least a good part of the reason.

Those are the only reasons, coupled with Matt putting the heat on that make starting him a good idea.

But according to the likes of Theissman, he doesnt have a strong enough arm to succeed.

according to joe the jury is out on cutler, matt and the TN guy as well....that a nice non commital statement he made!!....as opposed to joe montana who is quoted as saying that he can tell within one or two (i think he may have said one) pro practices if a qb is a pro qb or not...AND I BELIEVE HIM!!

Your're right, he's just doing the heck I don't know plant a seed of doubt then later if he's right he's a genius if he's wrong forget he even mentioned it or better yet claim his arm was stronger than he thought.

All he's doing is playing in the pros like he did in college, he's money.

Now maybe on a really talentless offence he'd struggle like any other rookie or veteran QB would but on this one, he's pretty much right at home.

So far today:

11-13 100 yards 1 TD 0 INT. That's a QB rating of 124. Not too shabby.

It is very early to make any judgement but my thouhgts are he is the best QB rookie we have had in decades. He has field presence and I think he will be looked upon very quickly as a leader. We have our QB of the decade in my opinion.

People are raving about philips rivers this pre season, and if he does in fact turn out to be good, he sat for his first TWO years.

where are all these people raving about this guy who's thrown 1 TD, while throwing 1 INT for a TD and fumbling 4 times (one for a touchdown) in his three games so far this preseason?

Rivers looks like a guy who has a lot to learn, just like every other QB who gets on the field for the first time.

First two games he was 24-35, for 250, salsbury/jaws were saying how great he looked. Doesn't mean they know what the hell they're talking about, but whether he works out or not what does it matter, you did at least agree that there are positive/negative examples on both sides of sitting/playing.

I never said there wasn't good or bad things - I simply said that QBs progress faster the quicker they get in the game - that can't be debated.

Oh - and Salsbury is a freaking ****** - his opinion is worth a fart in the wind. Oh - and NO ONE was saying how "great" Rivers looked against the Bears in week 2 when he threw a pick for a TD and didn't lead the Chargers to a TD.

Rivers looked good before his 3rd game but even in his 2nd game the 2nd play from scrimmage Urlacher picked him for a TD.
He's getting the ball downfield a bit more but now he's got a bruised shoulder so we'll see.

To be fair to Rivers the Chargers still don't have any sort of downfield threat at WR, its really strange seems like there are so many WR's in the draft every year but San Diego never seems to get one, even when they draft one.

But they do have a downfield threat overall in Antonio Gates, who they often split wide. This is sort of the new offensive personnel grouping, where you have two solid guys on the outside (like the Giants with Burress and Toomer) and one deep threat to break up the Cover-2 at TE (Shockey). I see the 49ers trying out the same thing.

As successful as guys like Santana Moss were last season, they're hard to come by.

Yeah but San Diego seems to have no outside speed at all. Will be interesting, Rivers is not a big arm deep thrower anyways so maybe they fit the Wr's to his strengths.

Great defense and run game though can't argue with that.

I think Warner gives us the best chance to make the playoffs this year, but in general I agree with cheese.

I like to quote the eminently quotable John McKay in arguments like these, "No one ever learned anything sitting on the bench."

Well as good as Matt has looked we have to be realistic how many plays does he even know yet?

I can certainly see a scenario later in the year where Kurt gets hurt and Matt takes over and never loses the job but I don't think he's going to just beat Kurt out this year. Now if he'd signed early and been there all through camp and was looking this sharp and knowing the whole offense maybe you could see a QB controversy in a few weeks, but that didn't happen.

I'd like to see Matt play a half against Denver and then go with whoever the backup is which unfortunately appears to be Navarre.

i'm glad people were calling me "shallow, shortsighted, defeatist, nonsensible" and everything else under the sun in this thread.

To be fair though, I was dead wrrong on Phillip Rivers - I've caught his last two games and that kid looks like the real deal.

That QB draft of 2004 could go down as another 1984 - Manning already led the G-men to the playoffs, Rivers looks great and Big Ben won a Super Bowl.
