This game would have been just fine if Amare decided to show up for the freaking FIRST HALF

I think the coaching staff needs to take the extra effort to run more pick and roll early on, I have noticed Amare has been coming on late after lack luster first halves. They like to run him at the top of the key and I think he sucks there if his shot isn't on.

This was one of those games that makes me feel like keeping Nash and Hill and Marion and dumping everyone else to start fresh. I lost track of the number of plays in the first half where the Suns were "running" up the court, only to see Nash start sprinting ahead of everyone else and arrive on the fast break before anybody else. It almost looked at times like Nash was trying to show up his teammates a bit (as well he should), as in "you all had the head start, so how did I get here first?" Touch comes and goes, but why oh why can't this team seem to bring the effort consistently?

Some plays that stood out:

1. Skinner's steal in the second quarter, runs -- really runs -- it all the way to the hoop for a left-handed dunk. He's get a pretty decent handle in the open court for a big man.

2. Hill's dunk over Jiop. I was already a big Hill fan, but that play showed me a whole other side to his game. His elbow was above the rim, almost like Marion only with the ability not only to finish above the rim but to get there from the outside as well. I'm starting to believe that by the end of the year, Hill may turn into a real clutch player. Between him and Nash, at least that's two guys that you know will show up every night.

3. Amare's missed dunk in the first half. Nash gave him the ball in the open under the basket, and did everything but set up a footstool below the basket, and Amare misses the dunk. I guess Amare's earned a few whiffs, but if I'm Nash, that play plants a little seed of doubt in my mind. Still, I think Amare will come around when it matters, at least offensively.

Two things. Firstly, Amare's rebounding has never been great in the regular season, but he's one of the best rebounders in the game in the postseason. Let's not forget that. I wish he did it all year but at the very least he always steps up his game when it matters. Also, his shotblocking has been much improved this year.

Secondly, I loved it when D'Antoni was ripping into the team during a timeout. It's a lot better than that nonchalant "lets up the energy guys, lets play harder." Did anybody else notice that everyone on the team was looking directly at him and focused? If D'Antoni spent more time getting into the players than the refs this team would be more mentally focused.

This is a schizofrenic game from the Suns perspectives.

Amare was no energy, abused by Dampier in the first half. but he turned almost the savior in the 4th with his dominant paint scoring, offensive rebounding, blocks and defensive rebounding and even a flop in the critical moment to get a charge call on Dampier. His block on Harris drive then ripping the rebound away from JoshH was so FREAKISH!

Well, that resulted in a turnover by Nash who did bad decisions in the closing minutes repeatedly and airballed the final 3. Yet, he had been the only one getting us any good shot all game long.

Marion is energy wise the most consistent performer with very good defense on dirk. But he became a little over-hyped in the 4th. We lost a couple crucial def. rebounds due to his fighting for them with his teammates Amare and Nash.

Hill was great in the first but disappeared somehow in the second.

LB had some good and very bad moments.

Diaw will be walking around psychically wounded for the rest of his life after he ducked that ball in the paint, where both Howard and Dirk were in air over his back. All he had to do was simply stand there holding his position, it'd be an automatic foul on the Mavs. He'd get FTs if he only hinted a shooting motion. What did he do, he dribbled away from his spot to avoid the foul calls on Josh/Dirk! WTF! Plus the one last game when he ducked shooting under the basket against TD, his psych seems shot. And he seemed to have realized right away that he screwed up again and got no confidence afterwards.

Anyway, Amare's main problem seems conditioning. His help defense has improved a lot so much so that the opponent drivers start respecting/fearing that. Otherwise, Harris/Terry would have torn us apart all by themselves.

Oh, and while I have stood up for Diaw in the past, I can't do it anymore. I would go as far as to call him a cancer for the team. He's an exceptionally skilled player, but everything he's doing on the court right now can be done by a journeyman big man making the league minimum. I was not surprised to see his -17 +/- tonight.

It's not just his lack of aggressiveness. It's his lack of passion for the game period. I can't stand it. It doesn't appear like he enjoys playing the game. I think that rubs off negatively on the rest of the team as well. The rest of the team is filled with veterans trying to win a ring, taking charges, throwing down thunderous dunks, getting fired up, and he's just been soft as charmin since he got his fat contract.

With Grant Hill his playmaking ability isn't as necessary as it once was and at the level Diaw is playing, it isn't anything special anyways. I say the Suns should get whatever they can for him and beg PJ Brown or Chris Webber or someone to sign.

Either that, or convince Diaw that the glossy finish on the championship trophy is the only thing that can cure herpes.

Oh, and also. The defense down the stretch was pretty damn good IMO. Marion was a freaking warrior and Amare was intimidating them with his shotblocking. Raja was fired up and playing aggressively as well. I take a lot more positives out of this game than negatives.

I watched it in super slow mo, looked like your average basketball ankle to shoe roll over. Not that it doesn't hurt like a bitch for a few days.

Raja seems very prone to those kind of injuries. I know a guy that plays pick-up games with us at the local gym that injures an ankle every time he plays.

Hopefully with Bell being hurt, Tucker or Banks can get some minutes.

Definately agree. Doris looks like he doesn't care to play anymore and is very "lacksy-daisy" about his moves on the court. Even coming off the court, he was strolling along, happy to come out because playing is such a pain for him. It was funny because even Van Gundy called him out for it on the air.

one of my buddies is like that. He is 6 fot 6 240 and a glass cannon. Of course he gets about 2000 more league invites than I do.

JVG said that Diaw is very 'coachable'..

he said it's like Diaw doesn't mind being benched.

Right, and he said although it's commendable, it can also be a bad thing. You want agressiveness, and sort of selfish attitude that "hey, I want to still be on the court, not come out!" Unfornately, Diaw doesn't have that attitude.

Apparently Diaw isn't very coachable. They've been complaining about his aggressiveness for a while now and he hasn't changed a damn thing.

well I think this game was good for both teams. both teams should leave the game with some concerns. Suns rebounding.....dallas not finishing teams off in the 4th. that is something they've struggled with all year. they did the same thing against orlando. However, I give them some slack because both of those teams are great offensive teams. I actually missed the first qtr and half of the second. I thought the mavs played very well in the second half. Down the stretch they couldn't get that one bucket they needed to clinch it, but they were trying to go inside so I give them that. I actually thought it was over when the suns decided not to foul, but amare did a great job getting the board.....then the and 1 on a dirk mental error.
I was impressed with the suns defense........in paticular Marion. he is very physical with dirk and looked like bowen out there. His defense is really good..........he can't stop dirk but he does crowd him well and force turnovers which lead to easy points for phoenix. He is worth that fat check they pay him. I think the mavs needed to get to the line more down the stretch with phoenix in foul trouble.

In a van...down by the river.
Good game.
Both teams played hard.
I don't like to cry about officiating but...the flops were brutal tonight.
Where has that Nash/Stat pick n roll been?
I thought the SUNS were focused on solid team defense for 2 full quarters also.(Stackhouse in the paint out to Dirk Diggler for 3 was the dagger IMO)
Diaw shot poorly but was aggressive in taking shots at least.
One thing though,Late in the 4th, having Skinner in for a struggling Barbs would have been my choice. Nash & Stat started workin it but we were giving up to many offensive boards on the other end. I realize the spacing is better w/Barbs in there to allow the 2-man game to work but when your playing catch up i'd prefer to go a little bigger to control the glass.
The whole "tip-drill" rebounding thing we do is weak. I understand the theory of it being that we're under-sized.
My favorite play tonight was Stoudemire's block underneath followed by ripping the rebound away from i think it was Josh Howard. That $h!t fires me up!
It got Stat fired up too.
I think we'll be ok against Dallas this year.
Their depth is a concern(as well as having a member of the *ALL-SUNS KILLER TEAM on the bench as an assistant coach) but i like our chances in a long series.

I like vangundy in the booth. I don't like many analysts.....especially NBA. He is one of the few.
