Actually the reason they did not make the trade with the Phoenix Suns was because Bryan Colangelo wanted the first-round draft going to Golden state to be lottery protected.
Exactly.

Suns offered John Wallace and a lottery protected 1st for Jackson but GSW wanted an unprotected pick.
Later St.-Jean got a better, unprotected, late 2nd rounder for Jackson.

I'm really happy that Suns did not make that trade.

Golden state should have made a trade or moved someone while they had time last year so they had enough money to sign Arenas.
They tried to do this, but obviously they did not try hard enough!

Yes, or even more simple GSW could have included a 3rd-year/team option in Arenas' rookie contract.

I signed a hard to believe that Arenas or his agent would have agreed to a contract with a third year team option. After the 2001 draft Arenas was very upset about dropping to the second round, and promised he would make everybody sorry they didn't get him in the first round with a guaranteed contract.

I find it hard to blame Golden State for losing Arenas. Their hands were really tied. The only thing they really could have done was draft him with their first-round draft pick.

If that's true why didn't Arenas sign only a one-year contract in 2001?

Perhaps Golden State wouldn't sign him for less than a standard first-year guaranteed/second-year team option second round contract. I don't really know. I do know however that Arenas was very vocal about how he should have been a first-round draft pick... more so than the average second round draft pick. I doubt he would have signed anything more than a standard second-round contract.

Actually he did sign more than a standard 2nd round contract because GSW had to use a part of their 1 mil. exception on Arenas.
Arenas simply demanded more than an usual 2nd round pick.
