Agreed and Agreed on Dalton. How does this validate AJ McCarron?
Because similar to the Tom Brady situation (not an exact correlation, just similar), the team isn't benching their highly productive starter to see what they have in their backup, even if he's very good. Garoppolo never got a few starts with Brady healthy just to see who is better.

Teams don't swap out QBs unless one is completely tanking. It just doesn't happen in the NFL.

It doesn't it. You asked why McCarron couldn't beat out Dalton and I'm showing you why. I mean, why couldn't Rodgers beat out Favre? It isn't unusual for a backup to develop and simply wait their turn. Warner was a backup. Brady was a backup. Foles was a back up. There's 3 Super Bowl winning QB's who were backups the season they won the big game. Just because someone is a backup doesn't mean they suck.

I am sure you are not comparing Dalton/McCarron to Brady/Favre/Rodgers/Garappolo. So it is reasonable to say McCarron couldn't beat out an average QB in Dalton. Thus any team will be settling for Dalton-lite in McCarron.

Palmer is retired and we currently do not have a QB. However, Dalton's bad reputation is not warranted. Put his numbers against most anyone and he's a top 10 QB at worst. If he can win a playoff game(like a certain someone we know), he'd be held in higher regard but I would take him as my QB every day of the week and 3 times on Sunday. I mean, my God, does anyone honestly believe he's worse than:

Case Keenum
Sam Bradford
Kirk Cousins
Josh McCown

And any of the others bandied about coming here? I mean, last season was arguably Dalton's worse season and he was head and shoulders above any of the stiffs we ran out last season including Palmer.

No thank you, I do not want his Colt McCoy arm strength because his signing like Cousins would deem him our franchise QB and not a bridge for a rookie which is the solution :)

Suggest you look at NFL highlights of AJ McCarron's 2015 season when he took the injured Andy Daltons place for the last several games and playoff against the Steelers. I tried to put in on this site but was unable. IMO he really looked good. But that was over 2 seasons and since then has been sitting on the bench.

Why didn't Tom Brady get his chance to start over Drew Bledsoe? Why didn't Kurt Warner start over Trent Green? Matt Hasselbeck and a younger Favre? Mark Brunell over a younger Favre? Jake Delhomme? Aaron Brooks? Matt Schaub?

I'm not saying that Dalton is Favre or Brady, but lots of the guys on that list were behind entrenched starters.

I think he's worse than Cousins. Not wildly, but enough. I think Bradford might be better too, but only when healthy.

I cannot disagree about parallels on both sides of our opinions. We have to wait and see how McCarron performs. Hope he does well if signed by cards. And fails miserably (hmmm... to prove my points :)) if signed by other teams.

such is the wish for them all is it not?
I can't figure out what I'm more excited for... the season, or us all arguing about who was right.

honestly... I dont care if Im right... I want Keim to be right... we all know, signing a FA that works out doesnt mean that a draft pick would have failed, and vice versa... and, I like Sam Darnold...if he goes to the browns and busts...doesnt mean he would have busted here...way too many variables in most situations... all we can look at is us, and does what we did work for us....and I am sure we all want Keim to be right on that.

even as badly as you dont want a blockbuster trade... think about the what if for a moment...
what if they trade for the #1 overall pick,...and the guy they select leads us to the next three super bowls and we win them....

if that happened (granted I know its out there)... but if it happened...would you ever miss the picks we traded to move up and get the guy?

would you sit on your couch on draft day, after winning back to back SB's and complain that we are STILL giving #1 picks to cleveland for that damned QB...

I know if they backed up a brinks truck to Cousins and gave him 32mil a year... but then we won the SB next year...I wouldnt miss a single player we had to cut in order to pay the man.. because obviously they werent part of the solution.(pretty certain I would be calling Keim all kinds of idiots before the winning started though, lol)

whatever the Redbirds do and however they get it done...we just need it to work

He could be another Rodgers or he could be another Scott Mitchell. No one really knows.

McCarron sucks. He is another Mike Glennon. If you sign him, you are doing so to have a QB on the roster heading in the draft. Same situation as when we signed Drew Stanton as our QB.
