He's shooting 40%. It's kind of his fault that they suck.

That is because Melo is not a jumpshooter. Unfortunately Mike D'Antonis non-existant offensive plan forced Melo to be on the perimeter since the Knicks are overall the 4th worst 3pt shooting team.

If you play a lineup with Amare, Melo and Chandler and cant shoot from the outside of course they will suffer.

Amare and Carmelo is just the worst offensive combination I can imagine. They don't have the shooters to space the floor for these 2.

Not surprised. He was overrated here and IMO is one of the reasons the Suns couldn't break through. I will always maintain if someone like PJ was coaching that same group we win at least one title.

Phil jackson would have never allowed Steve Nash to blossom. Steve Nash can't excel with a control freak coach.

I don't agree but you get the idea. I remember GP gushing over Nash an interview and saying he would love to have him on his team to make things easier. Even GP would have won titles with that group IMO. I could probably come up with a few coaches I think would have made the difference.

so wait, melo is so great and is such a great scorer(in the clutch as he is billed by so many NBA fans) yet he can't jumpshoot? what the hell? he's not a center.

Shocking considering how much New York gave up to Denver and the improvement of young players like Lawson, Afflalo, Farried and Galinari, Brewer, Chandler etc etc

Denver is one of the deepest teams in the league.

Denver also looked like a very good team with Carmelo.. Sorry but I don't see the trend here. Carmelo has had good amount of team sucess in his 10 years in the league considering that his best teammate so far was an old Billups for a year.

I don't think Carmelo ever had an allstar teammate on his roster other than Billups once in 2008 or 2009.
one all star is better than none. and I think melo should have stayed in denver. he thought the grass was greener and now he's paying the price for that.

dirk won a ring without another all star on his roster(aging PG in kidd, hothead sparkplug scorer in terry), with a deep team(like melo had before). so it can be done. denver was very deep with a good coach in karl. that year they whooped the mavs out of the playoffs in 5 games they were awesome. and that was with dirk averaging 34 points a game in that series. they were very deep. melo didn't work in denver on a very deep team. why didn't it work? i don't know. I think if he would have stayed there and waited for them to rebuild around him it may have worked better for him since he was "that dude" in denver. now in new york he is not that dude. hell Lin is that dude right now.

now you can't blame the knicks problems completely on melo, but it is hard to bill him as one of the franchise players in the game if he can't put that team on his back on win games like the "real" franchise players do on a consistent basis. he is an all star at this point. that's about all i'm going to give him until he plays like a franchise player.

And is there a better bet in the world right now than Knicks -5 tonight? Home game after firing their coach. Teams always come out motivated after this stuff. I think the Knicks are a good bet to miss the playoffs entirely, but tonight I bet they win handily.

i find it quite amazing that this franchise was able to execute their plan to fruition and are still a disaster.

1.) the got D'Antoni
2.) the following season they sign Amare
3.) the season after that they trade for Melo
4.) they successfully draft a young guy in Shumpert
5.) they sign Chandler, which allowed Amare to play the PF slot like he's always wanted.
6.) they find a diamond in the rough in Lin.

You really couldnt ask for more, yet they are still a terrible team and look to be going nowhere. On paper you'd think they'd pulled it off and found themselves contending, but hilariously they are still they laughing stock of the NBA on how not to gather talent and coaching together.

they are the spaghetti franchise of all professional sports, and nothing has stuck to the wall in over a decade.

did someone through a big ole nasty curse on them or something? MSG seems to be a career ending death trap for just about every single star the Knicks have had in the past 10 or so years. just looking back since 2000, it really does seem like every star player that played there got eaten alive.

Houston
Spreewell
McDyess
Tim Thomas
Van Horn
Marbury
Jalen Rose
Eddie Curry
QRich
Francis
Z Randolph

most of these guys were max contract guys, that we absolutely terrible on the Knicks. All but ZRandolph faded into nonexistence during their stay on NY or shortly after. McDyess stayed around and had a decent career, but the injury he suffered while on the knicks ended his star power.

All Melo had to do was play the damn wing properly, and this would have been by far D's best team ever. And he refused to do it.

Knicks are cursed.

Nah, they're just stupid. They put together parts that obviously wont work. They overpay for virtually every player they get, both in salary and in trades and (like the Suns) they ship out virtually every draft pick for almost no return.

In my opinion theyve been LUCKY to, by some miracle, not have the most barren roster in the league. They stumble across guys like Lin (who they were reportedly on the verge of waiving when "Linsanity" started), Novak...

Blind squirrels paying million upon millions for bad acorns and then stumbling into free nuts.

And the fallout from the Anthony trade isnt over. They owe Denver 2 1st round picks (2014, and in 2016 the right to swap, Houston already has the Knicks 2012 pick) and looking at the age of their stars, their health, and the teams cap situation those may likely become premium draft picks. That is, assuming the Knicks dont stumble into more nuts.

You have to give it up to Coach D, IMO. It was never going to work with him and Melo. It appeared that Coach D was willing to compromise but Melo was not. He apparantley made the issue either Melo goes or I go. The owner who over ruled both Walsh and I believe Coach D last season to acquire Melo, decided to keep Melo. Melo came to New York last year only after the trade which cost the Knicks dearly. The reason was that he made more money in a sign and trade than he would have by signing with his beloved Knicks as a free agent in the off season. They would have been loaded for bear if he would have just come in as a free agent this past off season, while keeping several future draft picks. It was all about Melo, not the team. Quite frankly Howard is staying with Orlando for the same reason, money, if the truth be known.

I also have to give it up for my man Amare. He and others apparantly did not want Coach D to leave. He is the only one at this point sticking up for him to the press. This is while Melo still is pleading not guilty. I see more troubled waters ahead.

Friday nights game against the Pacers should be interesting. Melo and his new coach, MIke Woodsen, will have to play against a real team. I for one hope they crash and burn. That probably means they won't.

Portland should signal to everyone how bad a team can get if you acquire the wrong players. What a mess. Very similar to the Knick situation. That is a team that needs to make some trades. How did Nate become such a bad coach so quickly? I guess the owner should dump him and keep Crawford and Felton.

Could not agree more.

What exactly did Coach D do so bad to Melo? The ball seeks energy in Coach D's system. If Melo would have just played hard, everything could have been OK. He decided to pout.

Stephen A Smith is just as bad. He is in Melo's corner and it appears he thinks every possession should go through Melo and that Jeremy Lin is overated. Melo was getting plenty of opportunities in Coach D's offense but was too much of an ass to buy in. He pouted and stood around when he did not get the ball.

No we don't. D'Antoni is not a great coach by any stretch. To think he could go into New York, gut any resemblance of defense for his system and think he was going to bring a title there was a pipe dream.

Look, I agree that having Melo on your team is a nightmare but that is not the only reason the Knicks are where they are at now.

Melo clearly was the impetus for Mike D's firing, but it does not change that Mike is not a good coach. He can implement a good offensive system... and his talents end there. Defense, rebounding, player development, rotations, adjustments, Coach Mike is absolutely awful in all those important areas.

And obviously Amare wants Mike to stay, he needs a coach in town who cares as little about completing on both ends as Amare does. :D

You all can have your opinion on D'Antoni, I have my own.

He is a very good coach, IMO. I could care less if you disagree.

If his team loses, it is his fault.

If his team wins it is because he has great players. He will never get any credit from some.

Whatever fits your argument is what you seem to go with all the time.

I really can't bitch about Sarver as long as James L. Dolan is in charge of the Knicks. He could toss all of his cash into a tire fire and still get more in return than what he's received from the Knicks. Actually, the Knicks ARE a tire fire.

I read somewhere that D'Antoni wanted to trade Carmelo Anthony for Deron Williams but Dolan wouldn't let him. If this had happened it would be a different ending for DA.

Am I supposed to prove your argument for you? I am not trying to be snide here but seriously... what am I supposed to say? That the guy with a winning percentage below 40% when Nash isnt his PG is a great coach? Whatever.

I liked what he brought to Phoenix, he had a good offensive system, but we would have been better off with him as an assistant because he sucks at absolutely everything else but running an offense and I dont see anyway someone could claim differently.

Good Post.

It is only a good post because its fits your arguments.

He does not develop players? WTF

Nash, Amare, Marion, Barbosa, Raja, Diaw, JJ, KT, TT, JJack, Felton, Gallo, Mosgov, WChandler, Jeremy Lin, T Williams, Fields . All were developed by Mike and most are still competing mightily around the league. Most can thank Mike for putting a few more zeroes on their current contracts. Poor player development is the most worn out thing he is blamed for. He had no bench in Phoenix but was regularly playing everyone in New York until Melo started complaining about not getting enough touches.

If you want to blame him for rebounding and defense , so be it. That certainly has been a weakness but a lot of that goes on the players he had on the roster. Our defensive field goal percentage was around the middle of the pack but we did not rebound well, that always has been a weakness. However when he left and Amare left, both blamed for poor rebounding, prior to obtaining Gortat we got worse.

Most of it is out right garbage. Mike is well liked and repected by his peers around the league. They know a whole lot more about basketball than you and anyone else on this board.

Too bad if you disagree.

Well, the stats disagree... and the history with a lot of those players disagree.

That you attempt to give D'Antoni credit for developing Marion, Nash, KT, TT, Raja and Jim Jackson (LOL) is utterly insane and destroys any credibility you might try to lend to the debate. And most of the remainder are what you'd expect out of Mike D's "development". One dimensional players who take as much off the table as they add to it. Just like Mike as a coach.

And Mike D owes every cent he made in New York to Steve Nash.

I didnt even notice you threw Lin's name in there too...

So basically if Mike has a player on his roster for more than 24 hours he "developed" them. Might as well throw in Rondo, I think we had him for about 5 minutes.

No it's a good post because D'Antoni does one thing well. I can post pages of stats and examples of reason why this guy isn't a great coach. You might like Pringles but I guarantee the guy never does anything close to the Suns run again in this league. That is not the sign of a "very good coach".

Develop players? To do what? Play on one side of the ball? Ignore rebounds to score in 7 seconds or less? Give green lights for unprecedented amount of 3's versus higher percentage shots?

Yes....that is the sign of a great coach. WTF???

In a van...down by the river.
I posted somewhere in here about 3 years ago that DA would be out of the NBA and back coaching in Europe within 5 years(or something like that). Hasn't happened yet but.....

He's a one trick pony, and his pony is now an old horse still playing in Phoenix.
