Red Holzman? Yes, he won the Knicks only two championships.

Or did you mean Red Klotz whose Washington Generals battled the Globetrotters?

Oh, you mean the Victory Cigar. Yup! :)

Well, at least you didn't dredge up Red West.:) Yes, I was referring to the only Red in the bunch who shouldn't need his last name mentioned if you're talking about greatest coaches ever.

How about original Suns coach, Johnny Red Kerr?

Alas, our first Head Coach lasted in Phoenix for only a season and a half before becoming an announcer.

I said "Victory Cigar", didn't I? Although from what I've read, the "groundskeepers" deserved part of the credit in making it difficult for the visiting teams, both on the court and in the locker room. Although Auerbach's men in green would have dominated anyway.

OK, who is Red West? All I found on google was a league named Red-West.

You never watched Black Sheep Squadron? Or Roadhouse? Or just about any Elvis Presley movie? He has nothing to do with basketball or coaching but he's one of my favorite Reds so I tossed him out there. He was a childhood friend of Elvis who later worked as his bodyguard and had a varied show biz career.

Nope, nope and a few. I preferred the later Elvis, particularly his Aloha From Hawai'i concert. The American Trilogy and Suspicious Minds. Good stuff! But, Steve, Elvis has left the building.

P.S.: One of my favorite early Elvis songs was Old Shep, a song ironically written by Pat Boone's (the Anti Elvis) father-in-law, Red Foley.

Notice the segue back to Red.

And D-Dogg, as for Dwight and surgery, he isnt having it... yet. If he continues to have pain and the Lakers continue to tread water then I fully expect him to do whats best for his career in the long term and get it fixed.

I'm feeling kind of weird saying...ok...maybe he can watch some tape and not fumble the ball every time he touches it and can learn to not be a wuss in the post while he recovers from surgery.

Because truly, he has sucked on offense this year. He's had a ton of touches, and has been stripped of the ball more than Kwame Brown in his prime. If Dwight wants to shut it down, throw Pau in the post and I bet we'd be a better team under dantoni's weird offense.

I have Old Shep, in fact, I'll come out of the Elvis closet - I have all his (known) studio recordings. Good catch on Red Foley. The Aloha From Hawaii concert is great on DVD, I still watch it every now and then. I tend more towards early to mid Elvis, especially the ballads. I also prefer the earlier Elvis movies over his later stuff. I can watch Kid Galahad or Follow That Dream every time they show them but The Trouble With Girls would require a court order for me to view it. And just to stay on topic, I'd be willing to bet that D'Antoni could do a better Elvis impression than Phil could.

I agree on that one. Pau would play the Amare role and play mostly within 10 feet where he thrives or running pick and roll from the top of the key. The Lakers D would still be awful but at least they'd have much better spacing on offense.

But really the best thing the Lakers could do is fire Mike and run a more traditional offense working inside to out, letting Pau and Dwight both play in the post.

That seems to be a popular opinion but what team is running that type of offense in the league right now?

The game has changed and is dominated by extremley athletic players on the perimeter. If you don't have some of those guys your chances are generally slim and none.

We have none of those guys and neither do the Lakers except for Kobe.

Both the Lakers and the Suns will not make the playoffs and it will not be because of coaching.

You have to be able to shoot the three and defend the three while getting back on defense. The Lakers can do neither.

A lot of the Lakers problems are largely because of coaching. There is no reason that team should not be able to pay passable defense. And Memphis plays the offensive style I described.

I am not saying it makes them a title contender, they're too old and too slow. But their front court advantages should have made them a playoff lock.

In other news, the Lakers lost AGAIN, and Steve Nash passed 10,000 assists for his career. Only the 5th player to ever do that. Articles on ESPN don't make him sound too happy--and some of his quotes are saying that he thinks this season is a lost cause. Even hinted that he was unsure they'd make the playoffs.

I think Nash has gained perspective as he has aged. Play as hard as you can for the team and enjoy your accomplishments. Nash is playing quite well for the Lakers. Kobe is still in the win now mode and rightly so. He is not used to losing.

Kobe is in the "win scoring title cause we ain't going anywhere" with a hint of "Get past Jordan in points scored" mode. :D

I've never been a Kobe fan, especially since he plays for the Lakers. However, I don't think anyone can deny his talent and that he is a driven man. If he could still carry the Lakers on his back, he would.

He can still carry the Lakers on his back but only if they are going downhill.

Phil Jackson surely would have got this group in the playoffs.

Maybe a few more wins but not much upgrade. Phil Jackson had doubts in this team. He was not very enthusiastic about this line up because half of the players don't know Triangle.

The team struggled to play "hybrid Princeton", which slows them down a lot and Peace had a horrible time learning it.

They didn't think the team had enough time to learn Triangle so went with what they have - Nash and Howard.

Little did they know Nash's injury took full 2 months to recover and during that period, Kobe and Howard show ZERO sign of chemistry.

And Pau is on a HUGE declining. Those that watched Pau in that championship run said it's like night and day. Problem #1 Pau is a CENTER. During two those runs, Pau played center. And of course Bynum became the center and pushed Pau to PF and he was never the same. He is now suffering from knee injury and now head injury...

Steve Blake, the real backup point guard is still injured. Two of the bench players are from D-league... and the best "energy man" is Jordan Hill and even he is injured.

Huge mess.

Guess who had a freakish good game for the Lakers against the Spurs. Earl Clark! 9/12 fg, 1/3 3pt, 3/4 ft, 13 reb, 1 to in 28 minutes. Wouldn't it be the shitz if he came to haunt us. I don't recall him ever have a game like this in Orlando, and of course not in Phoenix. Like we always said, he could be a player if he ever got his head on straight. Hopefully it stays a freak because with one big playing reasonably well, plus Jordan and Blake back the Lakers could go on a modest tear - enough to scramble into the playoffs with little help from Howard and Gasol.

It would not be pleasant to watch Earl blossom into a star AND help the Lakers into the playoffs.
