Well, let's see if these work. Apparently in other attempts I was including too much data inside the youtube brackets. Thanks for the assist Matt.

Here are two different songs with identical titles and similar messages about the state of country music.

Steve, That's great stuff! Loved the Corey Smith stuff. Been checking his stuff out on YT. He's sort of a country John Mayer. Liked it. Thanks for sharing!

Corey's drummer gets extra credit for doing the PAS test roll in a solo context. Made me laugh hard. LOL

You lost me here. What exactly did he do? I know there are standardized rudiments but I don't get the importance of the solo context nor do I know what a test roll is. And for people that worry we are getting too far off topic, I will point out that Miley once dated a drummer. Or maybe she just set next to one on a bus.

When PAS first established the 26 Official Rudiments (before there were 40), they also established a process to show mastery over single strokes and double strokes. The process was to start very, very slow, and gradually speed up to a fury, then bring it down very, very slow. It was thought that this showed total control over the rudiment. (I find it dubious, but I had to learn how to do it).

The point of the song where he does a double-stroke roll, slows down, then speeds up again -- that's the PAS test roll. It starts at 3:28. I suspect it was an inside jab at Johnny Rabb, but only weirdo drummers like myself even could imagine the connection.

And that's all I have to say about that, Miley. I mean Steve.

Okay, so I decided to listen to a little bit more of this artist to see if I should change my stance about whether or not she is talented. I liked a couple of her songs but for the most part I was not all that familiar with her music. So I purchased her last four CD's (including Bangerz) and I've been listening to them quite a bit this past week. I think those of you that judge her talentless are wrong. She may not be your type but unless you would place that same label on just about every top 40 artist from the past 60 years, I think you're being far too harsh in your judgement.

I didn't like everything she did on every one of those albums but I did like several songs on each of them. There were some good dance songs, some nice ballads and several songs that showed too much of her age and too much of her generation but all in all they were pretty entertaining. I'm sure I won't change anyone's mind here. Let's face it, I failed when I tried to convince my parents that the Beatles were talented so I have a poor track record at this but her job is to entertain and IMO she does it pretty well.

And if you're a closet Miley fan trying to decide whether to buy her new album. I'd say buy it. It probably won't win very many new fans but her old fans probably won't be disappointed in any way.

OK, I have some questions:

1. How many songs on those CDs did she actually write? (I'm betting the number of songs she's actually written make up one whole album)

2. How much was auto-tune utilized? (Trick question: In most questions, most people can't tell. Typically, auto-tune is made obvious on purpose).

My guess is there's little difference between Miley Cyrus and Rebecca Black.

I'm a little brain dead right now but while I think of how to respond to your questions I'll make one point that I think needs to be made. Consider that I am not equating her to a vocalist such as Timi Yuro but how many songs did Timi write, how many songs did Aretha Franklin write? I am not trying to convince anyone here that Miley is on her way to legendary status, I'm merely challenging the idea that she is "untalented". Anyway, here's a link to one of my favorites by her. I mentioned it earlier, it's a backyard cover of the Dolly Parton classic. It's the first thing I heard from her that made me want to pay attention to her.

Liberty Walk
See You Again (Billboard Hot 100 top-ten single)
SMS

From wiki (an entire section on voice):

Cyrus is a contralto, and with a "Nashville twang" in both her speech and singing voice. Songs such as "These Four Walls" have been noted as prime examples of Cyrus' twangy vocals. In her song "Goodbye", Cyrus' vocal performance is more "roosty" with a more "natural-sounding accompaniment" In "Party in the U.S.A.", Cyrus' vocals display an undertone of alternative country twang and features belter refrains. Cyrus' vocals for the song "Obsessed" are noted as being "husky." Throughout her career, Cyrus has experimented with altering her voice. Songs such as "Fly on the Wall" see Cyrus' voice processed to sound different. In "The Time of Our Lives", Cyrus' vocals display a prominent use of auto-tune, and are influenced by New Wave music. The songs taken from her Can't Be Tamed album further explore the use of auto-tune on Cyrus' vocals. The album's title track is noted as using auto-tune throughout various portions of the song's lyrics. When reviewing the Wonder World Tour, Dave Paulson of The Tennessean stated, "Cyrus' spectacle sets her apart from nearly every other A-list act touring today. She's not a renowned vocalist by any stretch, but her show's choreography barely provides a moment for her to catch her breath, and she's still able to deliver."

Early summer of 2012 Cyrus performed some of her favorite songs such as Look What They've Done To My Song, Lilac Whine, and Jolene, which she and her voice were both highly praised by critics. Cyrus' voice was highly praised by artists. Katy Perry was asked at the iHeartRadio Festival if she would ever collaborate with Cyrus and responded "I don’t know…maybe…she’s got an incredible voice. I have heard her sing ‘Wrecking Ball’ before that single came out and I tweeted about it a long time ago before it even came out and I was just so excited about it for her. She’s got a set of pipes that are incredible." Mike Will Made It stated in the MTV documentary, Miley: The Movement, "I said to my managed 'I wanna work with her' and he just reached out. You know, I was just like, 'oh my god, you guys have not idea how crazy this girl's voice is.' You hear her sing Jolene and you just go okay." Juice J, who teamed up with Cyrus and Wiz Khalifa for "23," said he's still in disbelief that he got the opportunity to work with her. "I never thought I would collaborate with Miley Cyrus, but I am so glad it happened," Juicy said. "It's like not even real to me! I have to pinch myself. It's almost like a dream come true 'cause she is super talented. We made a lot of great records together." J. Cole also gave his take on Cyrus' talents saying he thought her previous duet in 2010 with Dolly Parton was "amazing" and he would jump on a song with her if the right one came along. "I saw her sing on stage with Dolly Parton and I thought it was pretty amazing," the "Crooked Smile" rapper said. "She is talented actually I think beyond all the extra publicity." Ed Sheeran stated that he thought Cyrus had an amazing voice, especially in Wrecking Ball, but she was using it in the wrong way. "I think she's got an amazing voice. I just think she's packaged the wrong way," Sheeran told The Mirror, Entertainmentwise reports.

My guess is there's little difference between Miley Cyrus and Rebecca Black.

No comparison. Rebecca Black? Really? :|

OK, that's a really good cover of one of my favorite songs. I concede that was impressive. Keep in mind she sang a song that's in her range, instead of doing a Christina Aguilera impression.

In Brian's post above, someone mentions how she's packaged wrong. That would be the understatement of the year. If she went something like post-modern Dolly, that would've been brilliant.

I agree with Steve and think she has a good voice.

I just think she is nasty and trys to hard to be something she is not. I chalk that up to being young and stupid.

Sure feels like there is a corporate machine driving the bus. Doubt she'd get on the cover of Rollling Stone being a post-modern Dolly, but I could be wrong.

The same machine that sucked the art out of Liz Phair and left her in the "who gives a crap about her anymore" file.

She's being used, no doubt. Everything at the MTV Awards was 100 percent calculated.

That cover of Jolene is awesome. Now I'm going to go have to dig up the Wrecking Ball joint mentioned in some of those posts.

I think Miley is talented, Rebecca Black is effing redonkulous and that's a silly comparison, even tongue in cheek. My 6 year old covers Rebecca Black in an over-the-top way, and sounds better than Rebecca Black. :D

Miley is...weird. Totally packaged wrong. I'd love to hear more of her doing stuff like the Jolene cover.

I would too, unfortunately it's not really indicative of her catalog. Still, it shows what she is capable of. I'd like Wrecking Ball a lot more if she'd put her tongue away. Actually, I'd like everything about her a lot more if she'd put her tongue away but I'm clearly not her target audience.

I never thought I'd think that a girl wagging her tongue around and licking things would be anything but sexy, but Miley simply ruined that. I think there are fewer photos of her with her tongue in than out.

SMH.
