Yes because the Pro bowl is filled with terrible players. The fact that he's the ONLY offensive linemen in NFL history to be named to the pro bowl each of his first 8 seasons should tell you what kind of player he is. Just for good measure, he made it 9 in a row last year.

I like Veldheer, he can't hold a candle to Joe Thomas.
Thomas is also a 6-time All-Pro.

Is it just me or am I conversing with zombies devoid of human communication, who are only masquerading around as humans in a futile attempt to eat my nuts?

That's....kind of disturbing.....

Did Joe Thomas play for Wisconsin ?

I wont put too much emphasis in pro bowl selections
Doesnt give any sense sometimes, some players got selected even if they did play subpar but they got credit from what they did in the past

I am.agree with darkside, not easy to evaluate someone playing for a crappy team, cause if u lose 80% of the matches the level of competition in the 60 minuts is different, a lot of matches played by Browns were over in the 3rd quarter

Don't let my handle fool you, I am no Badger fan. In fact I love it when they lose, I am an ASU fan always have been always will be. And for the record my daughter attends the UW and she hates it when I cheer against them every week.

You say you don't believe in pro bowl selection? Well that fine, but hard to ignore the 6 time all pro LT. He may play for a poor team, and that makes the recognition he has gotten even more telling. He has been up against James Harrison and T-Sizzle twice a year for the last 9 years. That is a tough division they get after QBs and he has excelled on a bad team.

I know, it's like maybe someone knew something everyone else didn't.

I would trade them a 2nd and Floyd (yes, I have come around and with his current level of concentration, though he has a nagging injury of some kind) for Thomas and a 5th rounder... we suck arse on second round picks for the most part, so they can have the selection

We can actually afford him---mega-millions come off the cap heading into next year as we have 23 UFAs.

Go to overthecap and work out the math, dont generalize like "We'll have millions freed up".

Youll find out theres ALOT of those FAs that we definitely want to keep. Tony Jefferson 1st and foremost. Alot others

It really comes down to do the Cards think they're a contender with him. If they do and they can get him under the cap they should do it. If you're going to make a trade now is the time, bye week, Veldheer out.

If they don't think they're a contender then it doesn't make sense, big cap hit, lose a draft pick etc.

he's a terrific player but with Iupati playing on one leg, Mathis out, Shipley no good and Humphries overmatched is it worth it to get Thomas? Might be.

Mathis is no good to us next year and doubt he comes back, he was a one year 'we are a contender' signing. I say you do it because the opportunity presents itself of helping next year... we are playing next year, right? :D

I'd rather have a cheaper Joe Staley to pair back up with Iupati to form one of the best run blocking left sides in the league. Send Floyd packing & a late round pick should get it done.

Is Staley available? Even if by chance he is, I'm sure SF would ask for the moon from us.

Never mind, it looks like he is heading to NYG.

We have 37 mil to fill 18 spots (35 players under contract).

That does not include
Michael Floyd
Jaron Brown
Chris Johnson
Andre Ellington
Stepfan Taylor
Jermaine Gresham
Evan Mathis
Earl Watford
AQ Shipley
Frostee Rucker
Calais Campbell
Chandler jones
Kevin Minter
Alex Okafor
Tony Jefferson
DJ Swearinger

Whatever you think about those players, that list includes 3 RBs, 2 top 5 WRs, our only dependable TE, both of our starting RGs, our C, our two best DEs, Two of our 3 best OLBs, our starting ILB, two of our 3 best S's. Lots of holes to fill. We can't afford Joe Thomas.

Teams always structure/adjust contracts to make them work. They can afford Thomas if they want to.

Sure, crappy teams do this all of the time. We could have 22 mil wrapped up into Veldheer, Thomas and Humphries with an additional 9.7 mil in Iupati. Add 24 mil for Palmer and 15.85 for for Fitz and we are doing great. 71 mil in 1 30+ QB, 1 30+ WR, 3 OTs, and a OG. Great recipe for a successful roster.

It is if it gets you a SB. QB and OT are the 2 most important positions on offense. I'm ok with being great on one side of the ball and decent on the other. Seattle has been successful with that formula. Denver just won a SB like that and Indy, for years, spent on offense.

The question is, can the Cards find their top notch offense again with those players?

Player I do not expect to see in a Cardinal uniform next season
Michael Floyd
Chris Johnson
Evan Mathis
Earl Watford
AQ Shipley
Frostee Rucker
Alex Okafor

I only expect to see one of these get another contract
Andre Ellington
Stepfan Taylor

Players that may or may not for various reasons that the Cardinals can't control (mostly money)
Chandler Jones
Kevin Minter
Calais Campbell
Jermaine Gresham

Players I think the team targets for contracts because they will not break the bank.

Jaron Brown

Player I do not expect to see in a Cardinal uniform next season
Michael Floyd---gone
Chris Johnson---I think he might get another year
Evan Mathis---retired
Earl Watford---iffy, but possible depending on salary, but as the utility backup, not as a starter
AQ Shipley---he's played better that people realize; it wouldn't surprise me if they brought him back to compete with Boehm
Frostee Rucker---I think that if he doesn't retire, they will re-sign him
Alex Okafor---gone

I only expect to see one of these get another contract
Andre Ellington---gone
Stepfan Taylor---gone

Players that may or may not for various reasons that the Cardinals can't control (mostly money)
Chandler Jones---f-tag or long-term deal
Kevin Minter---the coaches like him better than we do; he needs a big second half
Calais Campbell---needs to be willing to give Cards a hometown discount; if not, he's gone
Jermaine Gresham---50/50 at this point

Players I think the team targets for contracts because they will not break the bank.
Tony Jefferson---they will try to re-sign him but he will very likely get a bigger payday elsewhere
Jaron Brown---yes, he's in the plans
DJ Swearinger---yes, but they may have to pay a little more than they'd initially want to

Thanks for this excellent post, cardpa.
