But the offense he is running certainly is. It doesn't require him to make very many NFL pro offense reads and he never is under center.

Well put, this is exactly what I saw.

Made no NFL throws in an entire half of football, where he threw for quite a bit of yards. I know that's the design of the offense, but it's tough to evaluate him as an NFL QB with such a small sample size of real NFL throws.

Quick, tell me all of the good NFL QBs that Oregon has produced in the last 10 years.

Joey Harrington? Nah.
A J Feeley? No
Kellen Clemens ? No
Dennis Dixon ? No.
Akiili Smith? No
Dan Fouts ? Too old.

if this invalidates college Qbs, you have just ruled out about 90% of them

even Andrew Luck, running what is described as a pro style offense rarely makes the kind of reads that will be required at the pro level. Its not just a function of the offense a given team runs, but the complexity of the defensive coverages colleges run as well.

I think it is funny that so many people knock Gabbert for spending most of his time in the spread/shot gun. Have you guys watched the Cardinals. That's what we do and we do it even with QBs like DA who are no good at it. Whiz is going to run the shot gun a lot with his QB. Why would you complain about a prospect who is good at it?

That's about the best critique of him I've seen.

Really most QB's in college don't have to make many NFL caliber reads though, you could almost say this of anyone.

It's why you never know until they do it how it'll turn out.

There are fewer and fewer pro style offenses out there and even the ones that are really don't simulate the NFL.

That's why QB's in the first round are such pains in the butt, it's so feast or famine, you only get a few Peyton Mannings who you KNOW will be good in a generation, most of the time you take a chance you just got Matt L or a Rick Mier or a Ryan Leaf.

I really think most QB's given proper training and time can learn to read a defense well enough, it's important they are smart enough for that but you just never know.

Really good points about the divergence in offenses between the college and pro games over the past decade. I wonder who in the NFL will be the first to try change? Or, will we continue to see more and more QBs coming in having a huge learning curve and overall QB play continuing to decline in the NFL?

Everyone moans about how few classic passer QBs there are, the colleges have changed and the NFL hasn't.

We were just talking about this today in my office.

Tom Brady is the ultimate NFL QB IMO, what makes him special is accuracy, poise, attention to detail, good enough arm etc.

It's his reads though, same with Kurt that makes the QB.

You really have to focus on that and you have no idea about ANY college QB other than a Manning in this respect.

I think it would behoove any NFL team to get the best QB guru they can land, to spot and train QB's, they should be paid HC money IMO and be expected to be nails at spotting and training talent, it's so important as to be stupid to a team.

Dammit why is everyone having such a difficult time grasping this? I am talking about how Pryor would be viewed AS A PROSPECT had he went to Auburn or Oregon. Had he played at Oregon A) His numbers would likely be much better and B) His athletic talents would still be there. Just like Joey Harrington and Akili Smith he would have been drafted at the top of the 1st round. Like both of those guys he may have been an all world bust, but if he picked a college to get coached up and eventually get drafted high, it says here he could have picked a better program to showcase his talents then OSU.

Thats why I think he would be worth a shot in the 3rd round or so. Because he has FIRST ROUND TALENT athletically, but hasn't been put in the proper system to shine.

Once he gets into the NFL it will be a crap shoot. It would depend on whose in front of him, the coaching he gets, and the system he is in. But I do think the physical ability is there.

In no way I am saying he is a sure thing, polished passer, or the most productive college QB of all time.

I am saying he is all world athlete who may have been viewed as a better NFL prospect had he played elsewhere.

And personally because of those physical gifts, I would take him over a guy like Gabbert, who I am not all that fond of. JMHO.

I would take Luck, Newton, Mallett, Locker and Ponder over him too.

Just not my cup of tea from the 2 -3 times I have seen him play. However I reserve the right to change my mind once I dive deeper into studying before the draft ;)

I remember coming out of high school in PA he ran somethign ridiculous like a 4.3, he is 6'6 and has a howitizer of an arm. I might be off slightly in my recollection but not my much.

That would put him in Mike Vick speed range (ran a 4.45 at combine) and about a full .10 of a second ahead of Newton. Meaning the part you bolded (about being in the athletic realm of those two players) is not far off at all. The production is obviously different, but not the statement I made about being close athletically. I really shouldn't have to explain to that someone as obviously intelligent as you K9, now should I?

Hey but keep on with the condescending posts K9 and thank you so much for gracing us ignorant fools and with your superior high level opinions

Lord knows he never is wrong *cough* Daryl Washington *cough*

BTW I read that post about Krang you wrote yesterday and didn't comment at the time but will now. That was one of the most idiotic things I have read in a long time and total bush league by you. Unlike yourself Krang doesn't have hypocritcal circular logic and actually does a good job of addressing his point. He's also accountable for when he is wrong. To say he "used to be a good poster" but now because he doesn't agree with your view he is unreadable is so asinine I don't know where to start.

The funny thing is IIRC you are a teacher. Do you talk to your students like that? Because if you did, I am sure someone would have thrown you through a chalkboard at some point.

But I digress :)

Hate to pull this thread off-topic, but was I really wrong on Daryl Washington? He gets pushed around in the run game, which is why he was benched for Paris Lenon once Gerald Hayes came back and didn't see the field in the base defense. He obviously hasn't replaced Karlos Dansby in either playmaking (that's been Kerry Rhodes) or leadership (to be expected somewhat).

But he's been great at running into the screen once someone else has already wrapped up the ball carrier. Daryl Washington hasn't been worthless, but I didn't expect him to be. He's had a couple of highlight plays, and a bunch of plays where he looks good because he gets there just as the play is ending. The Cards had him rated as a first-round pick, and if Dan Williams hadn't been on the board, they would've taken him. That would have been a gross error.

But after the preseason I expected him to finish in the top 3 of DROY balloting. Do you think he deserves to be anywhere close to that?

Calais Campbell and Darnell Dockett combine for 20+ sacks.
Adrian Wilson collects 5 sacks and 5 INTs.
Daryl Washington finishes in the Top 3 of Defensive Rookie of the Year votes.

Levi Brown allows a career-high 15 sacks.
Steve Breaston fails to notch 80 receptions or score more than 8 TDs.
Beanie Wells fails to rush for more than 1100 yards and scores fewer than 10 TDs. ?
Hmmm. You were off on the first 4. :)

Way to pull one line out of my three posts and address that.

My mistake on Washington.

GREAT JOB K9!!!!!!

Daryl Washington's season, so far, verses a number of first round "D" picks, that more than a few wanted the Cards to select in 2010.

D. Washington: (T) 74 (S) 1.0 (FF) 1 (INT) 1

R. McLain: (T) 76 (S) 0.5 (FF) 0 (INT) 1

S. Weatherspoon: (T) 42 (S) 1.0 (FF) 0 (INT) 0

B. Graham: (T) 13 (S) 3.0 (FF) 2 (INT) 0 (IR)

G. Hughes: (T) 3 (S) 0 (FF) 0 (INT) 0

D. Wash has been very good. He will get even better; he was an excellent pick.

C. Dansby: (T) 95 (S) 3.0 (FF) 2 (INT) 0 (PD) 4
D. Washington: (T) 74 (S) 1.0 (FF) 1 (INT) 1 (PD) 2

D.Wash hasn't fully replaced Dansby, but he ceratinly has shown he most likely would. For a rookie, he has done very well IMO.

Here are Dansby's numbers his rookie year BTW:

C. Dansby: (T) 61 (S) 5.0 (FF) 1 (INT) 1 (PD) 5

??? of his 74 tackles, 63 are credited as solo tackles.

Tackle stats are great.

SS Pat Tillman (224) and
middle MLB Ronald McKinnon (208) become
the first pair of Cards to crack 200 singleseason
total tackles … McKinnon also becomes
the first Card to register 200-plus total tackles
in consecutive seasons

From the Arizona Cardinals Media Guide for 2000.

Washington and Dansby are super slackers.

IF you want a C. Dansby clone look at Martez Wilson from Ill. 6-4 250 runs a 4.6. He is a red shirt Junior and if he comes out this year I would be all over him in the 2nd. His athletic ability is off the charts. He can play OLB/or both ILB in the 3/4.

LOL dude you were wrong on Washington.

Washington's playing time has been more a function of Whisenhunt's inability to trust rookie players or make them earn time.

I've been keying in on him quite a bit, and while he's not great at blowing up blocks, he holds his own and doesn't get punked by blockers. His sideline to sideline speed is elite and if he can gain strength/bulk in the offseason he should be pretty darn good next year.

Sure, he's no Karlos Dansby; but he'll be a Dansby LITE V2 real soon.

Yeah you'll notice K9's mocking avatar went down REAL QUICK once he realized how over the top he was about D Wash.

I said about 107 times once we let 'Los go that we would get 70% the production at 1/10 of the price with D Washington.

Looks like I was spot on with that assessment. :)

He's a stud and to be fair this whole draft has been sensational so far with almost every pick showing something and with the Wiz plays rookies, thats as much as you can ask as I can't see many rookies coming in and being stars right off the bat with Wiz's mentality (the irony is the one who started from Game 1 was the worst one, Levi Brown)

I read that quote on Azcardinals.com about Dumpster Dan and how Wiz said he went to grab him on the field during a skirmish and that he looked "possessed" and then went on to say when you combine that size, with that level of atheltic ability, and that ferocity your going to have something pretty special.

For all that has sucked this year, you gotta give the FO kudos on this past draft.

Either him or Dontae Hightower, from Bama, is who I want the Cards to get for a ILB replacement to Lenon.
