It's definitely a gamble. It's an interesting experiment. I was looking at future contracts and basically the only players we have signed for 2017 are Palmer, Peterson, Campbell, Veldheer and the 2015 draft class. Losing a first-round pick is a possible future cornerstone piece for ideally 5-10 years. Keim also highly values his ability to compound the value of draft picks.
I can't see him doing it, but we'll see.
I agree that it is risky and not very likely, but here is the best reasoning I can think of to make the move.
It is two first round picks, and a large contract. If you figure that you will use a first round draft pick on a OLB anyway, that makes it one additional first round. Then you figure in the age, 27 isn't bad, and maybe you sign him for 4 years. Same length as a rookie deal. So, you are essentially giving up one additional pick, and about 4 mil more per year over 4 years.
