Out of Mesa, Into Gilbert!
for better players after June 1 and after pre-season cuts..

Supposedly, he informed D. Urban of the Tribune, that he mis-judged the market, and that next year we will have to be more agressive in free agency right off the bat.....

All I got to say is this: WTF?????

I'm a big Graves fan so far, but how can you get to week 2 in the regular season and realise this.....

I think most of us on this board could figure out the "well was gonna dry up" on good players early in the FA market....

It just makes me sad, to think we are undermanned, with $14 million under the cap.... We should have gotten a few more players earlier in the FA period.....

All we can do now is trade, and we all know how seldomly that happens in the NFL. I think the only player we have of potential trade value is Damien Anderson. Maybe he could net us a WR. I wish we could get someone like Corey Bradford. I'd feel REALLY good about Bradford and Boldin on the wings for us....

Shocking. I'm totally stunned that Graves misjudged so much this offseason. I'd like to sell this guy a bridge or something. Shall we review his misjudgements since becoming General Manager?

1. Value of the #6 overall draft pick (Still angry about that extra pick)

2. Run on Defensive Ends in the middle of the first round.

3. Desire for Free Agents to come to Arizona

4. Amount of talent available following June 1 cuts

5. Market for post-camp players

6. Market for post-week 1 players.

Good lord, has there been a less-prepared personnel man in the NFL this year, or any year in recent memory? Like the franchise he rudders for, there's nowhere to go but up.

Which proves what many have been espousing for some time.

Graves: Well, I was trying to get through Week six before turning back to evaulating talent, but then something happened to my memory card, and I had to start all over. On the upside, I added two extra points to KVB's rating in Training Camp Mode! Whaddya mean, there's no one left in free agency?! Gerrardo DiNapoli is sitting right there!

And still he fails to move on Marco Coleman. Unbelievable.

Guess you can throw out the argument that Bidwill wouldn't let him spend money.

Marco Coleman signed Friday BEFORE the season started by Philly...we THOUGHT we could sign him AFTER the 1st game so we wouldn't have to guarantee his contract for the year

THAT IS COMPLETE & UTTER BULL ****!

Philly knew it needed help (god knows why) so they make the move. Winners do it this way.

We are $12 mill under the cap & don't make a move prior to opening day so we don't have to guarantee a guy's $$$ for the whole season...that is why we suck and will alwys suck unless there is a major overhaul on the management thinking.

He still has game. Wilkinson still has game.

I know there is a learning curve to any position, GM's included, but this admission is really kind of eye-opening. While I give him credit for admitting his mistakes and not trying to sugar-coat it somehow, it really makes you think whether he is up to the job.

Hello, I'm representing Arizona Cardinals Director of Pro Personnel Rod Graves. I understand that you have some south Florida real estate for sale. I'm very interested in this land. Please send me all the details, and I'll proceed to wait on it until it is no longer available.

Thank you,

Kerouac9

K9:

First we agree on Tom Coughlin, and now this. If only you could see the light about Kevin Kasper... ;)

That whirring sound you hear in the background is my Rod Graves Fan Club card going through the shredder. At this point, I'm willing to give Graves credit for two things: (1) listening to his scouts, and being willing to select some good players in the draft who may have been underrated nationally, and (2) convincing Cardinals ownership to approve market-equitable contracts for 1st-round draftees.

That's it. Everything else positive Graves has done is nothing more than I'd expect from the head of operations for an NFL franchise. I mean, there are only 32 of these jobs in the world. These guys should be the best and the brightest, right?

Nidan, could you please spin this for us?

Come on man - I know it's probably really tempting but there's no need to call people out - this speaks for itself as does the relative silence in regards to the thread.

All right, call out rescinded. I'll get rid of it. It'll be like it never happened.

The letter stays.

This isn't exactly new information...just admitting error. It was clear as these dates went by that Graves had completely misjudged the quality of players being released. I think he was trying to soften the blow of not getting his prized players in FA so he deluded himself into thinking good value was going to available.

I think Maddog is right on. Teams that have success in this league roll the dice and try and they don't let silly things like guaranteeing a contract get in the way of bettering their team. Watch the transactions log for the NFL and teams are always stirring the pot, trying anything to get better.

All I can say is I hope Graves has learned his lessons and won't make the same mistakes again.

I still like Graves and I don't feel shredded.

He misjudged the market he won't do it again next year. Graves is new to the job it isn't pretty but still what he has done you too easily dismissed.

Getting the Cardinals to sign market deals on draft picks is the biggest single accomplishment in the history of the franchise. This is the team that drafted Joe Namath and drove him to the AFL.

The guy fessed up to his mistakes but also I think he wouldn't call losing out on Coleman or Big Daddy that big of a mistake. Sure they are better than what we have now but they don't really fit the plan.

His biggest mistake was not getting Colvin and Holliday because they did fit the plan. He should have offered more or talked harder.

Where is that 'Hey I'm Rod Graves, pull my string and watch me..." with the howdy doody picture...That was hillarious, I miss that.

Who was that again that had that?

I would only point out that those players didn't fit the long term plan but they would have only been signed for a year. These players would have hopefully brought wins now and gave the fans something (ANYTHING) to view as steops in the right direction from a W-L perspective.

Graves should have made moves because they were better than what we have. Take them for the 1 year then decide if they fit the plan or not. He chose not to move...for what is apparently a pure financial reason rather than making the team better even if it is only moderately better.

I think that was "red storm"s gig. I miss that, too. It was funny.

"We expect to be very active in all areas of free agency... Er, we're going to wait until after the draft, and fill some holes... Er, we're going to be very active in the post-June 1 free agent market... Er, we're going to sign some players before and after Week 1 to shore up some weaknesses and make this team better... Well, meet the new Cards, same as the old Cards."

Actually I do have to work occasionaly.

As for RG, in the midst of slamming him with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight. Please feel free to ignore the goods things he has achived it makes your rant's so much more effective

1) 1st round picks in camp
2) The draft most of the picks are looking good right now, with the except of Q who looks unbelivable.
3) Resigning players before the end of their contracts (I'm hoping for more)
4) Leting Jake & DB go, did anybody hear Joe Bugel on that today ?

Not spinning anything I think RG has screwed a couple of pouches so far but then may he thinks so as well. But it's always easier with hindsight.

what did joe bugel say today...he probably knows quite a bit because he lives in san diego, was a former coach with the chargers and is tight with the coaching staff in denver...

in the past - he has been down on these 2 - plummer for lack of talent and boston for being a headcase..

Hindsight for you, maybe, but many of us were saying it as it was happening.

EDIT: As for the rest, those are things that other GMs in this league do as a matter of course. I still don't understand why people deserve extra credit for hitting par.
