It is time... :D

Word out of Pitt today says they will indeed select Gerrit Cole with the #1 overall pick

http://plus.sites.post-gazette.com/...sburgh-sports/110137-wakeup-call-cole-is-no-1

This coming from Dejan Kovacevic who is the czar for all things Pirates.

With Rendon sitting there for the Mariners it would be a SHOCK if they passed him up, so as predicted, Cole/Rendon go #1/#2

Here is where it will get interesting..

I have read where Seattle is having second thoughts on Rendon due to his questionable shoulder.

I'd LOVE to see Rendon there at #3, please D-backs just don't break my heart and pass on him.

Question is how high are they on Borchering and Davidson as 3B prospects...enough to pass on Rendon?

I read a report that said the Mariners are strongly considering Francisco Lindor at 2. I asked Nick Piecoro if we would take Rendon but he said they would look pitching at 3 no matter what. If Rendon were to fall that would be the best thing for the D-Backs. The Nationals look set on taking Starling unless the Royals take him at 5. If that is the case then the D-Backs will be able to get 2 of Bundy/Bauer/Hultzen.

DREAM scernio right there...

I just don't buy it.. Unless there is something strucually wrong with Rendon (and I have read multiple reports that deny it) he is just too good of a talent to pass on if you are the Mariners, especially considering it is a position of need...

I think it is smokescreen to try and get an under-the-table agreement so they won't have to sell the farm for Rendon...

In the end, if Rendon doesn't go #2, it will be very surprising..

Don't buy it.

Neil Huntington has gone on record and said he hasn't made his mind up yet. He's also been very tight fisted about mentioning who they're even interested in with that top pick, although it doesn't take a relative genius to figure out Rendon, Cole and Danny Hultzen are the ones getting the most publicity around here.

It's not a done deal who they're picking yet.. Dejean has often missed the boat with his calls of the free agent/draft kind.

The Mariners REPORTEDLY have issue with the fact that Rendon won't release his medical records to them.

Keith Law just tweeted he is recieving official word that Cole will be #1..

FOr the Dbacks, regardless of who they select at #3, we need to hope that either Archie Bradley or Fransico Lindor go in the top 6 PERIOD....

The GREAT news is keith Law is saying this morning that late word out of Baltimore is they will select Archie Bradley at #4 overall...

If that is really the case.. and assuming you believe that Washington will take Starling if he is there (something I think is the 2nd biggest lock of the draft after Cole going #1) then we will indeed get 2 of our 3 pitching studs in Bundy/Hultzen/Bauer..

I would be estactic, so ofcourse this will not happend...Should be an exciting day

Law just tweeted and updated his mock draft that there is an outside possibilty the Dbacks will take Blake Swihart at #7..

who you ask?!?

I did the same thing.. while is is ranked #17 on ESPN's top 100, he is no where to be found in the top 50 prospects MLB.com

He is a catcher but just 6 feet tall. He has good bat speed, and projected as a catcher in the bigs..

One of those guys who has a pretty high ceiling but is REALLY raw in almost every category especially fielding.

I am not sure about it.. But I guess we can give them the benifit of the doubt, but if guys like Archie Bradley, Fransico Lindor, or heaven forbid one of the 3 we are looking at with the first pick, why go with the raw H.S. catcher that some think isn't even a top 50 player...

I really hope this is a smokescreen..

Even Keith Law said he expected him to slide out of the first round because he has really struggled hitting high school pitching late in the season, and he only plays catch 1/3 of the time...

If we really take him at #7, considering this draft, we may be the laughing stock of the league...

I really like Swihart but want us to look at him with our 43rd pick. We need catching depth in the minors and to me him or Kevin Cron needs to be our supp 1st round pick. At 7 is much too high when you factor in the chance of getting top pitching.

Why wouldn't we want to draft Rendon?

We want and need pitching. I would love for us to take him but it looks like the only way we take him is if he falls to 7.

Got this from DiamondScape Scouting April 11, 2011 on Blake Swihart:

The Texas Longhorns commit is a rare switch-hitting backstop with "now" skills and a fair amount of projection remaining. Additionally, his athleticism provides for useful back-up plans at lf/rf/3b/2b should he run into any issues at all as a catcher at the next level. There is little to dislike with Swihart, though any situation requiring projection (and his future strength is what will ultimately turn his bat from solid to potentially special) carries risk. He easily profiles as one of the top positional prep players in the draft class and may have the most interesting blend of skills of any player not named "Bubba". He should go early on Day 1 and could be the first high schooler off the board.

This would be a concern on Blake Swihart:

In yesterday’s chat, Keith Law said that Swihart “keeps telling teams he has no interest in signing this year,” which is probably just a way of manufacturing leverage as one of the draft’s best high school prospects. KLaw and Baseball America rated him as the 17th and 19th best draft prospect in their latest rankings, respectively. Swihart has significant upside but still has a lot of work to do, and some team will surely offer him life changing money to see that he does that work under professional instruction and not some college coaching staff.

This is why this HAS to be a smokescreen...

Why in the WORLD WOULD we draft a high risk HS player with an unprotected pick in the top 10...

It makes ZERO sense...

maybe with #43, but not the #7...

I totally agree with you unless they have worked out a deal.

Everyone is now saying it will be Bauer and I couldn't be happier. No signability issues and he'd like to play here.

Nice pick for Bauer and could maybe even snag Rendon @ 7 .... which would have to be a dream draft

Either way, this should be a great opportunity for the diamondbacks .... read a good article a little while back stating that the d'backs should get more value out of these 2 picks based on historical slot performance than TB should in all of their early picks combined

weird that Seattle took Hultzen so high, may screw up the Snakes plans for stocking up on high quality college arms.

Hultzen goes #2 to an American league team.. interesting...

Bauer goes as expected to AZ (we'll get into that later)

Bundy unfortunantly goes to Balitmore... :bang:
