1. Preparation.

What's so great to see in these recent games is how the coaches have been preparing the players in particular facts of the game. This week, it was clear from the opening snap that the coaches were intent on bringing the running game back up to speed. You could see how much harder the o-linemen were getting after their blocks and for the first time this year Rashard Mendenhall was sporting some serious wheels---very reminiscent of his style of play when he was at his best in Pittsburgh. BA threw high praise at all 4 RBs and deservedly so. Clearly, the RBs were a real focus of attention in practice and in the game this week.

2. Ball Distribution.

Back when Warner was at his best he was involving every player in the offense and this is now the case with Carson Palmer. It was great to see Fitz have such a productive day and to see him set the 11,000 yard record at home. In addition, Michael Floyd was like velcro out there, and is fighting for RAC yards stronger than ever. Rob Housler had possibly his best game, focus-wise, as evidence by the seam route he caught and held onto after he got popped. He too is fighting for every RAC yard. Andre Roberts played tough, and Jaron Brown made a fantastic third down conversion catch on a low sinker. All 4 RBs were actively involved in the game and in helping the passing game.

3. Defensive Domination.

What's most impressive in this game was that despite having a rare sizable lead, there was no letup at all in the second half. For those of you who saw the Pats come back from being down 24-0---you know that when you give a good offense with a very good QB something to get excited about, strange things can happen. But, on this day, for Andrew Luck, the Cardinals' defense never allowed him to get in rhythm, and that was the key to the game.

4. Sticky Coverage.

No real blown assignments this week---and it feels so good to see the Cardinals playing so hard and sticky in the secondary---the lack of which has really plagued the team's success in recent years and in the games they lost this year. Peterson is now getting away with the hand checking that he was being flagged for his first two years, for he seems to know his limits. Funny that he tackled T.Y. Hilton on that unnecessary PI, but Peterson is not going to let a WR show him up and he is so confident in the defense that he feels he can take a PI and still get the ball back or at least hold the opponents to a field goal. But, what's so special is watching the Honey Badger switching over to tall WRs (corner of the endzone) and TEs (on Fleener on key third downs) and badgering them so doggedly---man he nearly has a pick six on the out pass to Fleener. Jeraud Powers is now playing smart and tough---is showing much stronger technique and leverage---and Rashad Johnson is making good hits in the hole, as he did to break up the TE seam pass.

5. Working the Sidelines.

BA is getting it done. He was hoarse again after the game---but he's getting the officials' attention and their respect (which is a difficult combo to pull off---if any of you has ever coached, you know how hard that is, especially when so many coaches act like crybabies). BA's secret? He knows how and when to pick his spots---like on the PI call over the middle on Powers on a ball that was thrown opposite of where the WR turned. Later on there was a ball thrown near the goal line to Fitz where the Cardinals got the PI call and that pass was easily as uncatchable at the pass Powers was defending.

6. Player Accountability.

As with all wise teachers, BA and his staff understand how important it is for the students to take ownership of the classroom. When you listen to the Cardinals players, they are embracing the preparation and the team dynamic.

7. Directory Assistance.

Have you noticed how on FOX and NBC how often they capture what's going on along the Cardinals' sidelines?---especially with the venerable Tom Moore. In Indy's heyday, they always showed Peyton huddling on the bench with TM and you just wondered what they were dialing up next. Same is true with Carson Palmer and TM. It's also so great to see the hands-on coaching that Harold Carmichael, Daryl Drake (who has clearly won the trust and affinity of Larry Fitzgerald), Todd Bowles and the ageless wonder, Tom Pratt. It's so great to have the DC back on the sidelines---for this staff is quite possibly the best team of communicators and teachers we have ever seen. These guys work their tails off. They are tough and they are so impressively loyal to the players and their fellow coaches.

8. Needs Improvement.

Daryn Colledge, who has been playing very well in recent week, had a rough night---and Yeremiah Bell was a step late on his reads. Not all was perfect obviously. But, look what Dansby did last week---he stayed and caught 100 balls a practice---this is what this team does and guys from the other side of the ball are there urging their teammates on. It will be interesting to see what Colledge and Bell do to up their games this week.

9. Swag Humble.

This team has a nice little swag going for them right now---but it's swag humble. This is a lovable team---they play hard and they love getting excited, but they don't get too full of themselves. As the old slogan goes: "keep your feet on the ground and your eyes on the stars."

10. Happy Thanksgiving.

I wish all of the Arizona Cardinals' family (which ASFN is a huge part of) a very happy Thanksgiving. We have much to be thankful for. I salute everyone who has stayed with this organization through the tough times. Hope truly is a good thing. Bless you and your families! Carpe T-Diem!

The coaching has impressed me... I had my doubts about BA and still can't figure out what he's doing with Ryan Williams, however, the results speak for themselves.
Yesterday, I focused a lot on Dockett as I really wanted to see what was happening to him during plays. He amazed me... He was double-teamed on the vast majority of plays - which is of course a big reason why Dansby and Washington (though he was oddly absent yesterday) are having Pro Bowl type seasons. Darnell gives 100% on every play. I coudn't believe how, on one play where Luck was extending the play by moving in the pocket and then scrambled away to the sideline later in the play, how Dockett never gave up and fully sprinted/chased Luck the entire way to the sideline - AND WAS CLOSING on him! Just amazing effort!

Back to Washington - is he hurt?? He was so not himself yesterday. I can't recall a game where he was so absent. Strange...

Mendy totally shocked me. Had no idea he could be that quick. Nice to see.

I think DD gets a bad rep from many fans because he doesn't put up gaudy stats and that's because of what you saw. I do notice that he never lets up and is usually the first Dlineman down the field on any screens or completions.

I believe Mendy was still hampered by the knee and toe and he is now close to 100%. SK also stated that he thinks the success that Duke is having has ramped up Mendy's competitiveness.

My guess on DWash is that he was the spy on Luck most the game which is probably why Luck only burned us once on a scramble.

Great write up Mitch. I have to believe BA has won most of us over at this point. The job he is doing along with the coaches he has assembled is truly amazing.

Nice job Mitch. This IS a lovable team. The players look after each other, and help each other to be the best they can be. They are unselfish. One needs to look no farther than to Darnell Dockett's chiding of Karlos Dansby recently about dropping so many potential interceptions.

The result was Dansby's staying after practice to catch 100 balls each time for days to improve his hand eye coordination. That resulted in a pick six for Dansby at a critical juncture for the Colts. They were embarking on a much needed drive when Dansby picked Luck and returned it for a TD, AND a very deflating moment for the Colts just when they needed to mount an 'answer' score.

These players inspire each other, just as the coaches inspire the players. You are so very right about the students taking ownership of the classroom. This is but one example.

I love following this team. I love how the Front office, and the Coaching Staff are of one mind with Ownership, and how they have inspired the players to join in being of one mind with the others. They are fun to watch. They play hard. They have each other's back. They are willing to prepare.

This team personifies the true beauty of team sports. They have arrived at the point where, (because of their togetherness), the whole has become greater than the sum of its parts. The Cardinals may not be the most talented team in the NFL, but they can be a daunting task for even the most talented teams to play. You can't walk onto a field with them, and rely on talent, swagger, talk, and bravado to come away with a win. If you beat this team, you have 'earned' your victory, because they will give you nothing. You will have to take it from them.

God Bless you and yours Mitch, and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

They had a stat on TV yesterday and it said CP had 10 different targets. That's really spreading it around. Like you say we haven't seen that since Warner was here.

This team is really coming together. If the offense keeps improving and we make the playoffs we could win. The next six games will be huge because we will have to win at least four to make the playoffs. This season just keeps getting better and better. Happy Thanksgiving to you to Walter!

I had the same question about Daryl. It's as if he didn't play (although he was in for 60 snaps, same as all the other leaders). Gonna do a quick rewatch tonight and focus on him.

I noticed in the two previous games there's been several occasions where he's gotten up a little gimpy after making a tackle and it's been obvious something was bothering him.

A tear in my eye for sure. Nice penning.

All is well in Cardinal land. I even met Adrian Wilson today at the airport. I thanked him for his years here, and told him how enjoyable it was to see him in Cardinal Red, every week! :newcards:

And happy Thanksgiving to you and yours WM.

Something that I haven't seen mentioned: The Cards converted 50% of their 3rd down opportunities. That's fantastic. Especially since it was something they were struggling with earlier in the season. Their season average is still 33%, 28th in the NFL, even after going 7-14 Sunday.

This pretty much echoes my thoughts as well 82. Dockett was all over the place. I still can't figure out why they don't let Williams see the field. Unless they are saving him for a secret weapon in the playoffs. :D

Edit: Dockett also said when is was brought up that he lost a sack when Dansby made the pick that he would rather have the pick 6 rather than the sack anytime. Team 1st player.

One of the things I'm most thankful for is Mitch's post game thoughts. Happy Thanksgiving M-Guy.

One thing that will convince me the Cards are the real deal is the point in time when we face an upcoming game fully confident that the Cards, without question, will take care of business.

We're not quite there yet, but we're getting close.

... and Jaron Brown made a fantastic third down conversion catch on a low sinker.

Watching the replay it seemed the ball was travelling on a high/medium trajectory, then suddenly dipped like a split-fingered fastball. Adjusting, diving and getting both hands underneath the ball was a very impressive example of concentration. That was one of the, "Wow! These guys are good.", plays of the game.

IIRC the Cards didn't need to convert a 3rd down their first two scoring drives. Factor that in with a 50% success rate on 3rd downs and it makes sense how the Cards scored 33 points on offense.

Another nice write up Mitch! Thanks for doing this each week.

Two things Steve Keim mentioned on his weekly chat with Doug & Wolf:

1) The fan base at U of P is starting to get that electric atmosphere similar to 2008 & 2009.
2) There is an infectious feeling of confidence in the locker room that they are going to win football games.

Mitch, we were believers in the BASK team from the git-go and I think our faith is being rewarded.

GO CARDINALS!!

Following this team for 40+ years and I am not sure I ever had the feeling I have now about this team. Prior to this year I've always had that little voice in the back of my head telling me watch out something bad is going to happen and the balloon is going to burst.

Today that voice is gone. I was able to watch a good portion of the second half at the bowling alley Sunday and I just felt that the Cardinals had this game totally under control. In prior years with a 27-3 halftime lead you always had this feeling somehow late in the 4th quarter the score was going to read 27-27 and the Colts have the ball with less than two minutes left.

Sunday I felt confident this team would win this game and it would never become a close game in the second half. It's amazing how one coaching staff and a new GM can change the whole culture and attitude of a entire organization.

That hasn't happened for me yet. The memory of going from the playoffs to 3-18 to 11-2 to 1-11 and all the HC's that started 7-9 or 8-8 only to revert to 5-11 and getting fired still lingers.

Good post.

I really like that you bring Jaron Brown's catch, and Rashad Johnson's hit and pass defense up.

Both are little plays, that while small, were extremely good plays by both players. Jaron Brown, satisfying his role and catching the one ball thrown to him, and it was a tough catch he made look easy.

Rashad Johnson being the poster boy of how to hit WR's in the NFL in 2013. Just perfect.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but Jaron has to eliminate the special teams penalties. He's had two in the last three weeks. Those are killers. But the catch on third down was excellent. That's what you love to see young players do.

Thanks for the great reading as usual. Watching these guys play one must wonder how BA did it so fast. Week 1 we watched and in the end we all worried. New coaches, New players, new QB and not enough time to get ready. Many unknowns, and the there was Honey bear making plays, Ellington and Taylor making big time plays. The defense what will ever do with Horton gone?

Thanks again Mitch and too all our Cardinal fans a healthy and happy Thanksgiving!

Have you all noticed how little the Bidwills are talked about when things are going well. Our discussions are more about our coaches and players. This is as it should be. Same goes for our GM. Who was Rod Graves anyway?
